This photo was lent to LDHS in 1983 by Mrs. E. Monti of Shepparton (a descendant of one of the Davies families of Happy Valley), so that a copy - Mounted photo 113 - could be made. It was donated to the Society in 2016 by Mrs. Monti's daughter Joan. See "Davies - James & Agnes" file. Date of photograph 1890-1900 is identified in inscription on the back of the photo. This date is highly probable, as "leg of mutton" sleeves were fashionable at this time.Sepia photograph mounted on card of a young woman wearing a dress with a high, beaded collar, ruching on the bodice, and "leg of mutton" sleeves. A large brooch of artificial leaves and berries is worn on the bodice near the collar. "BEATRICE WARD OF HAPPY VALLEY" is written on the card underneath the photograph. Double-Breasted lined jacket with 'wing' lapels. Left and Right pockets with cover flaps. Colour; Dark Navy. Petty Officer Badge (slightly faded) near shoulder of left sleeve.All Buttons Metal. Buttons Reverse; Stokes and Sons Melb. 6 Buttons on front; 23mm diameter. 2 Buttons on each sleeve cuff; 15mm diameter. All buttons show Crown and Anchor with 'Australia' beneath. Inside; 1 pocket on right side. 2 pockets on left side (i pocket small 'coin' or 'pocket watch' size). Inside neck; original fabric tag covered by 'Band-Aid ' sticker with the words 'G' or 'E' Cole per 13 Heeds'.

Clothing. Cream coloured lace silk wedding dress. Dress made from fine silk fabric with self stripe, fully lined with cream coloured linen. High round neckline with stand up lace collar(6cm). Bodice at front has crossover from shoulder to waist, forming deep Vshape at centre front with net insert below the collar. Net insert has vertical pin tucks. Bodice front and back has cream coloured lace overlay that extends over the shoulders to halfway down the 3/4 length sleeves. Hem of sleeves trimmed with embroidered lace with geometric pattern. Cummer bund of pleated silk fabric (7cm) is attached around waistband. Floor length skirt is gathered into the waistband.Front of skirt has straight lace panelsoverlay (37cmX 90 cm) including 20 cm flounce at lower edge, attached at waistline. Back of skirt has gathered lace overlay attached at waistline extending across side seams and over the edge of front lace panel. Centre back opening fastened with eighteen metal hooks and eyes from collar to waist and six metal press-studs below the waist. Cummerbund fastened with three metal hooks and eyes. A fabric insert at centre back fastened with press-studs. Collar has five pieces of stiffening plastic. Bodice has three bone casings across front above waistline, and four across the back. This wedding dress belonged to Rayleen Haig OAM, nee Janetzki, who married Donald Haig in Geelong on 15 August 1964. The dress was designed for Rayleen and made by Deon's of Melbourne, which specialised in wedding gowns (she believes it was above Sportsgirl in Collins Street). It cost about one hundred pounds. The reception was held in the Carlton Hotel, Geelong. A longtime local resident, Rayleen was a Brighton councillor (1983-92) and mayor (1989-90). She was awarded the OAM in 2007 for "service to local government and to the community through health, historical and aged care organisations, particularly within the City of Bayside, and to the National Council of Women of Australia".Cream silk dress with boat neck, short sleeves and back zip.
