This badge was produced in 1997 as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. Warrnambool was a planned town, established in 1847 as a port to service the squatters who had taken up large tracts of land in the Warrnambool area in the 1840s.The town was surveyed by the Government surveyor William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe and the first town lots of the new town were sold in Melbourne in 1847, with some settlers arriving at the new settlement soon after.This badge is one of the many souvenirs of the 1997 celebrations in Warrnambool Circular concave metal badge with blue drawing of a sailing ship and text. On her husband, William's, death in 1914, Violet Holmes inherited 'Sauchieburn’ property in the Ascot District of the Wider Ballarat District, Victoria. Her ownership had descended via the Holmes Family from the pioneer district settler/squatter Captain William Coghill. In turn, the property on Violet's death was left to their family: Violet Spittle (nee Holmes), Mary Holmes, William E. Holmes and Henry Smerdon Holmes. Thomas Ham was a cartographer, engraver, lithographer and publisher in Victoria and Queensland. He compiled and printed several editions of his squatting map, beginning with A map of Australia Felix in 1847 and changing its title to Ham's squatting map of Victoria in 1851. The 1851 edition was accompanied by a key listing the names of all the squatters within squatting districts and counties. Later editions show the existing counties, but some areas of Gippsland and the Australian Alps are still described as 'unsurveyed country'. This photograph shows the Orbost - Cunninghame coach leaving from outside Dickson's Hotel in Nicholson Street Orbost. Although noted as the Dickson Hotel, this may have been the Commonwealth Hotel which opened on New Year's Day 1902. Mr Jasper Drew held the first licence. Laura Dixon held the hotel licence from 04/04/10 until 05/02/17 and during that time it was known as Dickson's Hotel. A township, known as Cunninghame after a pioneer Gippsland squatter, was surveyed near Lake Bunga in 1866. The name changed to Lakes Entrance in 1915.This is a pictorial record of horse-drawn transport commonly used in Orbost, early 19th century. This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history.This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. The cup is mottled green with an impressed image of a ship and lettering in white, gold and brown. The company was founded by merchant squatter, Isaac Younghusband, originally as Younghusband & Co Ltd and was registered in Victoria on 1 May 1889. The business was engaged in woolbroking and as stock and station agents. In 1897 it became a proprietary company under the name of Younghusband & Co Pty Ltd. Another change in name occurred in 1902 when the company took over the woolbrokers R Goldsbrough Row & Co Pty Ltd and became known as Younghusband Row & Co Pty Ltd. The wool for this jacket began on the back of two sheep many kilometres apart. The first fleece for the warp was shorn from a single Merino at Currotha in Moree, NSW. The wool was 21-22 micron and the bloodline is a cross between Bundemar, Rossmore and Eural. The second sheep that provided wool for the weft was shorn in Beaufort, Victoria. It was a single Corriedale fleece shorn at Niawanda. The distance between these two towns is approximately 1250kms; a 15-hour car ride between paddocks. The two fleeces were spun and weaved together by the donor’s mother, Marjorie Allnutt. A level of talent is required to spin Merino fleeces. It is easier to spin cross bred wool, such as Corriedale, because it is less dense and much easier to comb, card and then tease out for a spinning wheel. The donor Philip Allnutt had a suit tailored out of the completed fabric at Ravensdale J & Son, 37 Swanson Street, Melbourne. The tailor was then a member of the Master Tailors Federation of Victoria. The business closed around 1986. Adding to the jacket’s story is its relationship to the household board game “Squatter”. Marjorie Allnutt was the sister-in-law of Robert Crofton Lloyd, the inventor of the wool themed boardgame. With more than 500,000 games sold in Australia as of 2007, it is the most successful board game ever produced in the country. The original “Squatter” board game is located within the National Wool Museum’s Collection. Philip Allnutt donated the Jacket to the National Wool Museum Collection in 2021. Cream singled breasted jacket with a narrow overlap and one column of buttons for fastening. The jacket features notched lapels of a medium width and two buttons of a cream & brown marble. The jacket has three visible pockets. A jetted pocket with no flap is on the right breast. A further two jetted no flap pockets finish an inch above the hem, on either side of the opening. Internally, the jacket features a further two pockets and a white silk lining for comfort. In the beginning of the19th century, the main mode of transportation was the horse and carriage. Even after the advent of the railway, remote areas still relied on the horse for local transport.Until Australian coachbuilders began making buggies from the 1860s, most were made in America Buggies with four wheels were light but comfortable. Many had hoods to keep the sun and rain off passengers. They were generally owned by doctors, ‘squatters’ and business people. Some had small turn-out seats at the back for children. Thought to be the chains used for the Henty's bullock harness. The Henty family are known as Victoria's earliest European settlers and pastoralists, emigrant squatters who played a defining role in the establishment of Portland and the development of the region's wool trade. Facing challenges as a farmer in early 19th-century England, West Sussex grazier Thomas Henty (1775–1839) turned his sights south to the colonies, where he believed his seven sons would have a brighter future as sheep breeders and wool producers. Caroline Elizabeth Newcomb (1812 - 1874) woman squatter. Born in London and emigrated to Hobart Town in 1833. She went to Port Phillip in 1836 as governess to the children of John Batman. She met Anne Drysdale in Geelong and they set up a farming partnership. Caroline Newcomb joined the Wesleyan Methodist Society in 1839 and became the first secretary of the Methodist Church at Drysdale, founded in 1849. After Anne's death in in 1853 she continued to run the Coryule property. On 27 November 1861 she married Wesleyan minister the Rev James Davy Dodgson. She died at Brunswick on 3 October 1874. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the house was purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squatter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. The first section of Studley House, now part of the preparatory school for Xavier College conducted by the Society of Jesus in Kew, was built in about 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson, an early settler in the district, as a two-storey residence in the Classical Revival style. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the house was purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squatter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. (Victorian Heritage Database, 2023)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s.
