This photo album was collated by Ray Pearson, a tramways history enthusiast and collector. It was donated to the museum in 2012 along with one other photo album, by his grandson.This photo ablum is significant for containing a large volume of historic photographs of vehicles, personnel and events related to the the Victorian tramways - particularly Victorian Railways, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong tramways - from c1920's to c1994.Brown rectangular photo album (landscape format) containing photographs, newsclippings, postcards and other paper documents. The album contains 25 separate leaves plus a front and back cover. The album is bound on the left edge with brown cord, tied in a knot at the front. The spine and page edges are tattered and many of the photographs and documents within are loose.The front cover has a printed decorative border, rectangular in shape with a geometric pattern. The corners of the border also have decorative geometric shapes. .1 - Hard bound book, 172 pages, including end covers, 10 sections, title "Mind the Curve", with subtitle "A history of the Cable Trams", stitch bound to hard red Rexene covers with gold block title on the spine only. Dust cover has the title, author, drawing of Bourke St and details of the book and author on the returns. Written by John D Keating, published by the Melbourne University Press in 1970. Has index, acknowledgements, table of contents, list of illustrations and references Looks at the establishment, construction, operation and demise of the cable tram system in Melbourne. Provides location details of the engines houses, tramcars, ticketing, management, politics, the Northcote line and the workers. Has a hand written note written by the daughter of John Caddell, a cable Tammie. On the page opposite the Acknowledgements is a typed note regarding visiting Mr Twentymen's house. .2 on the inside of the rear cover is a photograph and note regarding John Caddell and information about John's retirement from Preston Depot. .3 - Newspaper cutting, "Hold tight for the curves" - The Herald, 15/10/1970 - written by Laurie Power. reviewing the book. Built as a toy, either by a well resourced home workshop or by a toy maker. Have been well used or loved with missing wheels and damaged roof. Possibly dates from the early 1900s. St Kilda was a popular destination for Melbourne cable trams. Demonstrates a toy cable tram set.Cable tram set made from wood and pressed metal. Grip car or dummy has remnants of paint (green and gold) on the sides, holes for wheels on the two wood blocks on the underside. Has an eye hook at one end and a hole for another at the other end. Seat made from timber with a steel wire or rod to represent a grip lever. Metal secured to wood base with nails. Has four metal Staunchions on either side. Trailer similar construction with sides stamped or cut from sheet steel with holes at either end for a eye or hook and wheels. Roof on both items has been pressed and assembled. The trailer has painted on one side "St Kilda" and the remnants of a similar word on the other side.cable trams, toys, trams, st kilda

Cable trams operated in Melbourne from 1885 to 1940. Initially by the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co (a private operator) then the "Tramway Board" from 1916 to 1919 until the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board took over. This strip of two tickets would have been a set of pre-purchased ticket in a lot of eight (8) tickets (1/- worth). Priced 1 1/2d each. On the rear lists the lines available and the section available. Yields information about the materials and the methods of installing electrical domestic cables in Ballarat houses during the 1920's.Section of timber or wooden electrical conduit used in houses c1920, to contain wires for electrical lamps and fittings. Consists of a timber base (very light softwood - ??) with two slots that was nailed to a wall and after the cable installed a cover strip applied. Has one end mitred or cut at 45 degrees.
