Robin WELCH ( 23 July 1936-5 December 2019) Born Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England Robin Welch is one of the most highly respected contemporary British potters. The full range of his work includes large vessels with related paintings, fine drawings, and distinctive bowls and vases which explore colour, surface texture, form, detail of edge, and line. He is one of small group of significant British potters who expanded the language of throwing pots on the wheel through post-wheel additions and alteration. MALCOLM BOYD Born Gippsland, Victoria In 1977 Malcolm Boyd graduated with a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. It was at this time that he presented this work to the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Over thirty years later he still has a passion for ceramic history and design. Boyd operated the Black Cockatoo Pottery from around 1980-1995, starting in Essendon, then moving to Ascot Vale, Stratford, Bairnsdale and finally Fernbank in Gippsland. His handbuilt stoneware pots and clay sculptures are wood fired at his East Gippsland studio. He often uses ochre coloured dam banks on his property at Fernbank. The local clays are crushed, screened and blended with a white stoneware body to produce a number of shades and textures. All Malcolm Boyd's pot's are hand built using moulding, coiling, slabbing, and modelling techniques, and are high temperature fired (1300C) to allow some of the very ancient oriental glazes to mature. All works spend at least 20 hours in the wood fired kilns. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. David FRAZER (1966- ) Born Foster, Victoria, Australia David Frazer works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. He studied a B.A. Fine Arts (Painting) at Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Diploma of Education (Secondary- Art/Craft) at Latrobe University in 1991. He completed an Honours Degree in Fine Art (Printmaking (at Monash University in 1996, and between 1998 and 2000 Frazer undertook a Master of Arts (Visual Arts) by research: “Pastoral Melancholia”, at Monash University. One of Austalia's foremost printmakers David Frazer's highly detailed woodblock and linocut prints often explore the emotional and fragile state of the human condition. Norman BAGGALEY (b1937- ) Born in Staffordshire, United Kingdom . Arrived Australia c1978 Norman Baggaley obtained a National Diploma of Design (Painting ) at Stroke on Trent College of Art, UK. His first Australian appointment was from 1978 to 1980 where he was Dean of the School of Arts at Ballarat College of Advanced Education. He spent the next two years as Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Prahran College of education. From 1982 until 1991 Baggaley was Professor of Visual Arts and Dean at Prahran CAE, before moving to the Victorian College of the Arts as Associate Professor and Dean of the School of Art at the University of Melbourne Victorian College of Art. Norman Baggaley was Head of School at Ballarat College of Advanced Education. He offered the work for donation with the Art Acquisition Committee commenting that "it was desirable that works from previous heads of School of the Arts be held by the College and that initially the painting could be located in the Art staff room for the first year then displayed else where on campus. Kylie THOMAS (14 May 1973 - ) Born Creswick, Victoria A graduate of the Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) (1993) and Diploma of Visual Arts (1995) from Federation University (then University of Ballarat) Kylie Thomas continued her art practice after studying under distinguished sculptors Peter Blizzard and Adrian Mauriks. This work was acquired from her graduate folio. Soon after completing her studies Kylie Thomas became an artist in residence at Ballarat Grammar School building a public sculpture for the grounds conceived by one of her selected students as part of the program. She became the youngest exhibiting applicant to be awarded the City of Port Phillip, Rupert Bunny Foundation artist in residence program. After moving to Mallacoota she was absorbed into the community as a visual artist, actor, playwright and assistant publicist. Her commissioned public artwork and sculptures as part of residences collections were all lost in the 2019 bushfires that decimated Mallacoota. Moving back to her hometown of Creswick Kylie Thomas completed a Diploma in Education qualifying as a secondary teacher, always continuing her art practice while teaching. Needing to work again, but with no desire to teach, Kylie Thomas studied Building Design and Architectural Drafting, homing in on other areas which could link back to her artistic practice. Working in this field for a short time she moved to Melbourne where she exhibited paintings and sculpture installations as part of The Melbourne Fringe Festival. Donna MARCUS (1960- ) Featuring instantly recognisable kitchenware Donna Marcuus transforms them with colour and placement to create sculptural installations. The individual elements in each work, originally produced in the 1950s and 1960s, are transformed and trigger memories and personal memories through experience of the items in a different, earlier context. Robert JACKS (1943-2014) Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–1960 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. His first solo exhibition was held to great acclaim in 1966 and in 1968 his work was included in the landmark exhibition, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Beginning in 1968, Jacks spent ten years living and working in Canada and the United States. It was during this period that his unique visual language matured, incorporating influences from the major exponents of contemporary abstraction, minimalism and conceptual practice. The flow of the fabric is the allegory of bloodshed, while the empty jar suggests displacement of refugees. Cassandra’s body, as mother earth, is a metaphor for the peaceful landscape that is desecrated by acts of war. The artist uses these iconic figures to exemplify and demonstrate why peace is always better than war. This work was awarded second prize in the 2009 Lucato Peace Prize.
