The Australian Womens Army Service was raised on 13 August 1941, and in 1944 and 1945 AWAS served in Dutch and Australian New Guinea. In June 1947 all members of AWAS had been demobilised and in April 1951 the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAAC) was formed.This album has photographs of AWAS in Training at Guide House in Melbourne, March Past's at Victoria Barracks Melbourne and near the Melbourne Shrine, AWAS in New Guinea and postings 'somewhere in Australia. The Volunteers Air Observers was formed in 1941 with the aim of observing aircraft flying over Australia. There were over 24000 civilians volunteering their services and as the military threat to Australia subsided they took on roles as coast and weather watching. This certificate was presented to Miss S. McDonald of Warrnambool.A common item presented to people who contributed to the defence of Australia while in a civilian role.Cream paper with aircraft and Union Jack flags at top with man and woman in between with Royal Australian Air Force insignia below. Rev Daniel Foley was Bishop of Ballarat 1916 - 1941 and was very interested in Japan and these books among others in the archive reflect his interest in that country and its people in the early 20th century. VX 27898 Corporal Thomas John Morris Thomas (Tom Thomas) donated several items to Cranbourne RSL. He served in the Australian Corp Signals in WWII both in Australia and overseas. He was born at Womerah on 9/11/1906 and died at Koo Wee Rup 16/06/1984. The alb (from the Latin albus, meaning white), is a white liturgical vestment coming down to the ankles. In most pre-Vatican II albs the lower segment of the vestment was made of or trimmed in lace as is the case in this example. This alb is possibly that of Bishop Foley, Bishop of Ballarat 1916 - 1941. -

During WW2 headlight covers were used for night driving during brown out periods. They were compulsory from late 1941 to the end of 1943 when it was thought that the danger of invasion had passed.
