From the collection of Warren DOUBLEDAY. Tickets were given to donor by retired railway officials who were given access to them for their collections following the tickets withdrawal from use. Fifteen are for journeys to and from the Port Melbourne station and include Single, Weekly and 'Extended Periodical' tickets.Those from Graham Street Station include three singles & one 'Periodical Pass'. As well as the singles & weekly tickets, the 24 to & from North Port Station also include a 'Periodical Pass' and one for a 'Collapsible Pram'. . From Montague Station single and weekly journeys make up the eight tickets. The weekly tickets show how far people would travel to work in Port Melbourne. From Ascot Vale, Broadmeadows, Carrum, Coburg, Gowrie, Malvern, Mont Albert, Reservoir, St Albans, Thorrnbury, Williamstown, Yarramam. The primary role of a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) member was that of nursing orderly in hospitals, carrying out menial but essential tasks - scrubbing floors, sweeping, dusting and cleaning bathrooms and other areas, dealing with bedpans, and washing patients. They were not employed in military hospitals, except as ward and pantry maids; rather, they worked in Red Cross convalescent and rest homes, canteens, and on troop trains. At the start of the First World War, Australian VADs were restricted from travelling overseas by the Defence Council. As a result, many chose to travel on their own initiative and join British detachments, often in Australian Hospitals. It is reported that the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital included in their nursing staff some 120 VADs, chiefly Australians in the British service, employed through the Australian Red Cross Society. This pair of cuff links was produced in 1992 as a memento/souvenir to commemorate the centenary of the formation of the Shire of Orbost - 1892-1992. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. Photograph of W6 class tram No. 883 running a route 10 to West Preston service in Macarthur St Melbourne with the Victorian Treasury building behind. They are people boarding and alighting from the tram. The tram was built in April 1943. There are no holes in the dash canopy lighting which were installed in Nov. 1951. The tram has a sign on the front about traveling in comfort between 930 and 430. Tickets, Old Transport Tickets x5, 1950
These tram tickets were issued by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board which operated from 1919 to 1983 and the train ticket was issued by the Victorian Railways. The Williamstown Short Road Ferry operated from 1931 to 1974 from Port Melbourne to Williamstown and was replaced by the West Gate Bridge which opened in 1978. This was the third ferry service in this area, with the first one commencing in 1873. These tickets have social significance as examples of the tickets used by Melbourne transport in the 1950s. They will be useful for display.These are five paper transport tickets (Melbourne tram & train and Williamstown ferry). The tram tickets are coloured orange and pink, the ferry ticket is green and the train ticket (made of light cardboard) is orange and yellow. The two orange tram tickets, (cost threepence) have an advertisement for Stamina Trousers on the back. They were purchased on the same day. The other tram ticket is a City Section ticket costing fivepence. The ferry ticket cost threepence and the train ticket for travel between Jolimont and Seaholme cost three shillings and fivepence. Also has part of the Fletcher Jones & Staff shop in right hand of the photograph, above the tramcar. Tramcar has an SEC Roof Ad, regarding electric cooking. The spine has the title, two crossed flags, the words - Montis Insignia Calpe and Nelson and Sons publisher printed in gold and black. There are lined illustrations and maps inside. There is a Contents page and list of Illustrations. At the back is a ten page list of books to read, including - The World at the Fireside, Stories of Travel, New and Favourite Tales and more, all published by Thomas Nelson. Pp.158. This menu appears to have been produced for the 1947 Maiden Voyage of the S.S. Athenic travelling between London and New Zealand via Curacao and Panama. This was possibly the first voyage on this vessel early in his career for engineer G. W. Duncan and therefore a souvenir. The commander of the vessel was D. Aitchinson. Also of interest given that the UK was still very much governed by post WW2 rationing, is the range of food available for the farewell dinner listed.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. In the 19thC and early 20thC men often wore their shirts for a week or more. However the collars were detachable so that they could be changed when they became dirty or for special occasions eg Church on Sundays Collar studs were used to attach the collar to the shirt. The cardboard box was used for storage and when travelling. The collars were very stiffly starched so as to maintain their shape. Some have Laundry instructions printed on the inside of the collar.The Maggs family were pioneer settlers in Moorabbin Shire.12 detachable, stiffly starched, white collars, from various manufacturers, for a man's shirt. Each Collar has 3 buttonholes for attaching to the shirt - 2 at the neck and 1 centre back. They have been stored in a cardboard box marked 'Boheco regd. From knitting and croceting articles, she progressed to felting and a 'wrapping' technique, always using unspun wool.
