Correspondence from Charles French held in the archives indicates that the Horticultural Society of Victoria met at Burnley in 1857 and Charles French then an apprentice in a nursery at Richmond was asked to plant the tree. The photographs show members of the Swan family: the Rev. Ashby Swan, his wife Elvie and children Ormond, Keith and Max. Ormond Swan was the Rev. Val Aumann's father, and Rev. Ashby Swan was her grandfather. Ernest Ashby Swan: born 1885 Geelong; educated at Melbourne University and the Theological Hall. Ordained in 1913. Served at Gawler, Wallan, Burnley, Mornington, Balaclava and Caulfield Central - St. Giles.
