Walking Stick, Mr Bendall Walking & Measuring Stick, c.1920
This walking stick, which is also a horse measurer, belonged to Atwell George Bendall, the well-known racing man, judge and handicapper in the Western District early in the 20th century. Born in the Caramut district, he was the manager of the ‘Green Hills’ estate at Winslow, a property owned by his father who also operated a livery and coach service at Caramut. When his father died Bendall carried on the family business until the end of the 19th century when he went to live in Warrnambool. A lover of horses, Bendall was an amateur rider of note and an owner of several racehorses. He also took a keen interest in coursing and owned and bred many successful dogs. In Warrnambool he took an interest in trotting and owned several trotters. For the last sixteen years of his life Atwell Bendall was a handicapper for most of the Western District race clubs and his keen judgment and knowledge of horses were greatly admired and appreciated. He was also a judge at agricultural shows and other horse events and this is probably where he was made use of this horse-measuring walking stick. He died in 1922. This is a most significant item as it belonged to the prominent early 20th century horse racing identity in the Western District – Atwell Bendall. It is also of general historical interest as an ingenious object – a walking stick doubling as a horse measurer. This is a mottled brown-coloured wooden walking stick, slightly tapered and with seven segments. It has a wooden knob at the top curved and indented in an acorn shape. The knob has silver coloured nails or tacks driven into the raised sections. The knob lifts out and is actually a wooden ruler with silver casing at the top of the ruler. Also at the top of the ruler, at a right angle to the ruler, is a lift-out metal piece which has a spirit level at the top end and this metal piece is used to rest on the horse to estimate its measurement in hands. There is a leather strap near the top of the walking stick for attachment to the wrist and a gold metal cap at the bottom of the stick. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: SILK AND NET BLOUSE, Late 1800's early 1900's
Clothing. Cream cotton net, woven with a goemetric pattern of filligree diamonds and tiny squares. The garment is fully lined with the most delicate, and sheer cream silk. A peplum ettect 7 cms deep, is finished with 9.5 cm deep peak at the centre front. Two metal hooks, and stitched eyes are the only fasteners, and are located at the waistline on the peplum seam. The curved front bodice is edged with a 3.5 cm deep frill of cream net, which is finished at the outer edge with two rows of stitching in a heavier weight thread. The front bodices are gathered at the centre front to the peplum. The long sleeves are finished at the wrist, with a double frill of plain tulle, also edged with a double row of stitching, in a heavier thread.costume, female, silk and net blouse -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: STRAW ''PILL-BOX'' HAT WITH FEATHER AND BERRY TRIM, Early 1900's
Clothing. Oval in shape, 4 cms deep at the back, and slightly flattened to 2 cms deep at the front. Deep brown straw on the outside, with a slight sheen, deep blue straw on the inside with a glossy finish. A fine elastic is attached at each side, to hold the hat in place. A band of stiffening lines the inside of the back, to hold the shape. Attached to the front of the hat is a 51 cm long, deep brown ostrich feather. A cluster of seven deep red (one loose) glass bead 'berries' and a scrunch of dark red velvet, hold the feather in place. Clothing - PINK EMBROIDERED SILK PETTICOAT
Clothing. Narrow shoulders straps-.8 cm, hold the curved slightly peaked bodice-shaped at both front and back. One dart at each side seam of front. Centre front is lavishly embroidered in a chinese style, with some cut work, some shadow work and silk thread floral embroidery. Neckline is bound with a fine 'rouleau' type binding. Front has a V-shaped panel inserted from the right hemline, and back has an identical panel at left hemline. French side seams, machine stitched. Hemline bound as for neckline. Nickel plated skim milk and cream separator. Splits into six pieces; some pieces are believed to be missing. Two pieces are cylindrical and have long spouts that curve downwards at the ends. Conical shaped piece which goes in centre and has hole through the middle (This piece has removable brass screw). Long straight rod with wooden handle and small, threaded section at other end. Rounded, circular rubber band, probably used as seal. Large round pot with thin flanged rim, seated on raised base edges. Tap with fitting on one side. Round piece with three evenly spaced legs. both sides slightly domed - fits into upper separator piece.On the brass nut of the conical shaped piece is engraved "unscrew" with an arrow adjacent. "10516-C" with another arrow and oval shaped trademark with lines inside. Nino Corda was a Geelong based textile designer who worked at various textile mills between 1957 & 2003. He travelled the world in search of the latest fashions and techniques and developed timeless designs that were much loved by Australians. These items are on rotational display at the National Wool Museum’s ‘In the Factory’ exhibition. For many years, Nino also worked as part of the Honorary Staff of the National Wool Museum. His passion for the world of textiles provided energy and knowledge to the visitors and staff of the museum. Although Nino has now retired from his honorary position and has hung up his Australian Tartan vest, these items will continue to serve the community in sharing the stories of Australian Textile design.Custom made wooden hinged box with a hook latch. Brass yarn spinner, attached to a mahogany wood plinth base, which spins fibre into cord/yarn/thread. It has dials to set the rate that it spins. Metal plaque with black inlaid enamel lettering. Small cork inlay. Brass rod with hinge and wingnut, and ball at end. Ball at end has an adjustment mechanism. Rod also has an adjustable circular collar. Pair of curved tweezers. Used on a farm in the late 19th or early 20th century.A pair of shaped steel horse hames which are linked together by a five links chain at the top to two rings. There are two large flat steel hooks attached to the sides with bolts, nuts and rivets and it has two metal rings at the bottom. It would have been attached to a horse collar and used to to distribute the load around a horse's neck and shoulders when pulling a wagon or plough. The collar often supports and pads a pair of curved metal or wooden pieces, called hames, to which the traces, which attach to the wagon or plough, of the harness are attached. The collar allows the horse to use its full strength when pulling. 1: Small cardboard box with lid containing Silver distance Measurer. This was used for Measuring distances on plans.(Planimeter) 2: Cardboard Box without lid containing three plumbobs: One large turned brass: one small turned metal. One circular silver coloured metal complete with string and winding board. These were used to locate survey equipment above a fixed point. 3: Timber ( Vic Ash?) dovetailed box with brass hinged lid and brass swing catches containing plywood templates called railway curves, used for drawing curves on plans. 4: Cardboard box with lid containing Allbrit panimeter in Bakelite/plastic box with silver metal hinges and catches "Shire of Kara Kara" inscribed on the box. The box contains the original Instructions. The Planimeter was used for calculating areas of Irregular shapes and used for estimating quantities from plans of cut and fill projects, as one example. 5: Timber Box with brass hinges and swing catches wand leather carry Strap containing one set of self adjusting level made by E.R. Watts and Son, London England. Paper label on the inside "Shire of Stawell". Also had paper instructions pasted to the inner lid. The level was used for taking Ground Levels. The first 3 have been in use up until the 1990's, when computer drafting took over the role of these instruments with greater speed and accuracy. Animal specimen - White-Throated Needletail, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The white-throated Needletail is a migratory bird, breeding in Central Asia and southern Siberia, and wintering south in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. This large swift is often mistaken in flight for a small predatory bird, but its long curved wings and white markings help to identify it. Needle-tailed Swifts get their name from the spined end of their tail, which is not forked as it is in the more common Swifts of the genus Apus. They build their nests in rock crevices in cliffs or hollow trees. These birds do not like to sit on the ground, spending spend most of their time in the air. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This white-throated Needletail is predominantly grey-brown in colour. The throat and under tail of he bird are dusky-white. This specimen has a white spot on the lower rim of each of its wings. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Some were made of stone. Earthenware and terracotta were also used, from the Middle East to France and the Netherlands. Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. This stayed cool while the metal bases were heated and the idea was widely imitated. Cool handles stayed even cooler in "asbestos sad irons". The sad in sad iron (or sadiron) is an old word for solid, and in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. Goose or tailor's goose was another iron name, and this came from the goose-neck curve in some handles. In Scotland people spoke of gusing (goosing) irons. At least two irons were needed on the go together for an effective system, one would be in use, and the other re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. Some were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. An early domestic object that gives an insight into how the ironing of clothes was done before the electric type irons we use and take for granted today. Newsletter No. 216, May 2014 May Excursion – The 1901 Eltham Railway Walk The railway from Heidelberg to Eltham was opened in 1902. Over the previous year railway construction cut a curving swathe through Josiah Holloway’s 1851 Little Eltham subdivision. The survey plans for the railway show the owners and occupiers of land within Little Eltham affected by the railway alignment and for some distance each side. The plans show houses and other buildings but development at that time was rather sparse. Copies of these plans from the State Library of Victoria collection have been provided to the Society by Alan Sheehan.
