Newspaper - JENNY FOLEY COLLECTION: WARES
Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Wares: an array of products sits outside the Bendigo Pottery in 1930. The pottery was established in 1857 on the left bank of Bendigo Creek, near the junction of Eaglehawk Creek, and was brought to prominence in 1968 when then owner George Guthrie was awarded two gold medals at the Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne. By 1870, the pottery was producing a wide range of items, from stoneware pipes to spirit bottles. The pottery still operates at Epsom today. Clothing. Men's pure wool trousers with a full length stripe - waist to ankle, 3cm wide (red) 1.3 cm gold metallic ribbon (stitched on top of red). Fob pocket at waistline. Hand knitted, long sleeved jacket. A 3.5 cm moss stitch band at the wrists, at the centre front opening, and around the chest, where eyelets provide for a ribbon insert ( no ribbon present). A 7 cm deep stocking stitch back yoke. Front also has a stocking stitch yoke, but at the front, there are two bands of the pattern across the centre of the yoke.(Pattern has a 10 row repeat). Clothing - WHITE COTTON CAMISOLE WITH CROCHET LACE TRIM, Early 1900's
Wide square neckline, and square yoke of crochet extending into short crocheted sleeves. A seven cm deep peplum has a cotton casing and cotton tape drawstring. The front opening has three hand-stitched button holes, and two pearl shell buttons( third is missing). Rows of 1.5cm cotton lace run horizontally at top and bottom of yoke, with three rows - one at each edge, and one in centre of sleeves. Clothing - WHITE COTTON LACE TRIMMED DRAWERS, 1890's- 1910
Two 2cm cotton fabric covered buttons close the waistband of the drawers, at the centre front. A 33cm wide gathered panel at the centre front, fastens to the waistband with two 1.5cm plastic buttons-(possibly replacement for original buttons). This gathered panel may suggest that these drawers were worn during a pregnancy. The 75cm long legs are trimmed with two bands of floral embroidered, and cutwork lace-eight cm deep lace. waistband is 6.5cm deep. Domestic Object - VICTORIAN BLACK SILK AND LACE PARASOL, Mid to late 1800's
Object. eight ribbed parasol. Black silk satin, and black cotton lace in a floral design. Eight peaks around the perimeter of the umbrella, attached to the double layer of fabric in the main body of the umbrella-an outer layer of silk, satin, and an inner layer of cotton. This lining is hand stitched. Frame, including handle of lacquered wood. Handle is graciously curved and carved like a feather. Four scalebuoys stacked above each other in a metal frame one with a copper turbine arrangement on top. Pink nightgown made from flocked nylon featuring a dotted design of butterflies, and triple dots. Twelve bands of elastic shirring define the waistline, and give fullness to the bodice. Shoulder straps 4.5 cm wide, widening to 7 cms at the top of the shoulder are edged with a 2 cm plain pink nylon frill. A 2 cm band edges the bodice at the top and waistline, witha similar frill attached. A similar frill extends around the hemline. A new garment.Label still attached: Quality Lingerie created by Hanro. Gentleman's brown suede fabric spats, bound at seams and lower edge in .75 cm leather strips. Four one cm, diameter plastic buttons at outer ankle, with four stitched buttonholes. Centre front seam is lined with a leather strip, opening edges lined with cotton tape, and finely machine stitched. Fine white cotton round neckline edged with lace. Three lace panels on centre bodice. Clothing. Deep cream silk centre piece, with scalloped edges - 18 cm x 16 cm. (Scallops 6.5 cm wide). Cream linen bobbin lace - (probably Brussells Lace) surrounds the silk-9cms deep at each corner, 3.5 cms deep at the sides. Fan shapes woven in the lace, emphasize the scalloped centrepiece. Flowers as in 11414.26 and 11414.30a and b, would suggest that this lace has been made by the same maker.
