Russell at the beginning of 1958 regarding progress with the writing of "There Goes a Man"; Russell notes that he is 3-4 weeks behind his planned schedule. This photo was lent to LDHS in 1983 by Mrs. E. Monti of Shepparton (a descendant of one of the Davies families of Happy Valley), so that a copy - Mounted photo 113 - could be made. It was donated to the Society in 2016 by Mrs. Monti's daughter Joan. See "Davies - James & Agnes" file. Date of photograph 1890-1900 is identified in inscription on the back of the photo. This date is highly probable, as "leg of mutton" sleeves were fashionable at this time.Sepia photograph mounted on card of a young woman wearing a dress with a high, beaded collar, ruching on the bodice, and "leg of mutton" sleeves. A large brooch of artificial leaves and berries is worn on the bodice near the collar. "BEATRICE WARD OF HAPPY VALLEY" is written on the card underneath the photograph. This has had a label reading "KATE PEARSON OF HAPPY VALLEY" taped over it.On back: "Given to Sarah Davies / KATE PEARSON OF HAPPY VALLEY / Don't know what year taken possibly 1890-1900." The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal was a commemorative medal made to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. For Coronation and Jubilee medals, the practice up until 1977 was that the authorities in the United Kingdom decided on a total number to be produced, then allocated a proportion to each of the Commonwealth countries and Crown dependencies and other possessions of the Crown. The award of the medals was then at the discretion of the government of each territory, which was left free to decide who got a medal and why. A total of 138,214 medals were issued, including: 11,561 to Australians 12,500 to Canadians Ladies awarded the medal can wear it on their left shoulder with the ribbon tied in the form of a bow. The medals were issued without inscription except for the 37 issued to the British Mount Everest Expedition. These were engraved MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION on the rim.Miniature medal with ribbon. The full size medal is a circular, silver medal, 1.25 inches in diameter. The obverse features a crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, in a high-collared ermine cloak and wearing the collar of the Garter and Badge of the Bath, and facing right. There is no raised rim and no legend. The reverse shows the Royal Cypher EIIR surmounted by a large crown. The legend around the edge reads QUEEN ELIZABETH II CROWNED 2nd JUNE 1953. Booklet - Glittering Gullies
1. Dorothy Dempsey was a student of Arthur Thomas Woodward (see No.2). She was considered a "promising artist" who exhibited in Bendigo and Melbourne in the late 1930's - early 1940's. The Bendigo Art Gallery has one of her paintings. 2. Arthur Thomas Woodward (1865, Birmingham, England- 12/2/1943 Bendigo) Studied and taught art in England, Paris and Antwerp before coming to Victoria in 1889. Whilst briefly the Art Director of the Sale School of Art, he married Emma Jane Stokes in 1892. He then became the Head of the Art Department at the Bendigo School of Mines, where he remained until his retirement in 1921. He was responsible for the art division of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition. and was heavily involved in the establishment of the Bendigo Art Gallery. He lived at "The Roselands", View Street, where he also conducted private art lessons after his retirement.Beige soft cover booklet of 32 pages. In woodworking, a moulding plane is a specialised plane used for making the complex shapes found in wooden mouldings. Traditionally, moulding planes were blocks of wear resistant hardwood, often beech or maple, which were worked to the shape of the intended moulding. The blade, or iron was likewise formed to the intended moulding profile and secured in the body of the plane with a wooden wedge. A traditional cabinetmakers shop might have many, perhaps hundreds, of moulding planes for the full range of work to be performed.Bertie Robert Edgar Greenwood was born c. 1880/81 and died aged 82 in Hawthorn in 1963. His father and possibly his grandfather were also carpenters. Bertie’s work as a cabinetmaker required precise planing to give lovely edges and other elaborate decorations. The major item in the tool collection is Bertie’s wooden box, which houses 45 different moulding planes. Later in his life, he used these skills extensively when he worked as a patternmaker for a plastering company. Bertie worked through his seventies, retiring when he lost a finger. The tool collection was donated to the Kew Historical Society by Bertie’s granddaughter, Pamela Webster Bloom, a former resident of Kew.Plane - Wooden Moulding, Beechwood & Metal, 7/8" Beading, Moseley & Son London. The coach started for Orbost from Roadknight's, near Cunninghame (Lakes Entrance), at 7.30a.m. The journey was 32 miles and took eight hours. The fare was 25 shillings return. William Henry Gray was killed when a large slab of rock fell on his head at the Clarence Mine, Eaglehawk in April 1902. He was only aged 32 and left a widow and five children. The family lived at Bracewell Street, Eaglehawk.Brown poster advertising a concert at the Eaglehawk Town Hall. Wednesday, June 4th.
