Labour Day originates from the eight-hour day movement - eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. On 21 April 1856 Stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne, Australia, stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their direct action protest was a success, and they are noted as the first organised workers in the world to achieve an eight-hour day with no loss of pay, which subsequently inspired the celebration of Labour Day and May Day. John and Phyllis Murphy designed this house and garden in Kew for Sir Frank and Lady Macfarlane Burnet in 1959, the year before Burnet and Peter Medaware received the Nobel Prize for discovering acquired immunological tolerance. For the most highly honoured scientist to have worked in Australia, Burnet's house is modest - single storey with two bedrooms. Typical of post-war suburban housing thought, the garden is a generous, and the planting a mix of existing shrubs and trees, old favourites such as camelias, hydrangeas, lilacs, and a unusually 'a thick copse of native trees'. John Murphy (1920-2004) and Phyllis Murphy (nee Slater) (1924-) are alumni of RMIT. John commenced his architectural studies at Swinburne Technical College prior to WW2, and subsequently studied at Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT University) from 1944 to 1946. Phyllis studied architecture at Melbourne Technical College from 1942, before transferring to Melbourne University's Architectural Atelier in 1944 They both completed their Bachelor of Architecture in 1949, with Phyllis topping the fourth year, and John coming in second. This is a design drawing for a McCraith House (Larrakeyeah), Dromana, also known as 'The Butterfly House' , which was commissioned by Gerald and Ellen 'Nell' McCraith, and designed in 1955 by architect David Chancellor, Chancellor & Patrick. It is one of the few modernist houses on the Victorian Heritage Register. Fred Ward, better known for his work with Myer Heritage, Patterncraft and the ANU, began making furniture in the late 1920s for his own house in Heidelberg. An early client was the sophisticated and progressive Maie Casey, who in 1932 furnished the rented Gwynn house in Canberra in a radically austere style, with Michael O'Connell textiles, Ward's monastically simple waxed timber designs and imported steel tubular chairs. Maie Casey's patronage proved enduring and influential. Robin Cocks (1941- ) and Peter Carmichael (1942 - ) formed their partnership in 1967, and designed some of Australia's most innovative project houses in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The award winning Civic Growth House (1974) was designed for Civic Construction. It provided clients with a modular grid and a range of components that allowed choice in location and spatial variation. The houses were designed to be expanded as families grew or as finance became available. The Hardware Club was established in the 1980s in Hardware House, Hardware Lane Melbourne by Andrew Maine, Jules Taylor and Paul Jackson, who all worked together at 3RRR. Artists, fashion designers, and musicians all flocked to the Club in the 1980s. It was the place to experiment with fashion and dance to dawn at a time when may venues closed early. Hardware Houses rooms were perfectly suited for the purpose, its polished wooden floorboards ideal for a dance floor,mezzanine floor for spectators, and crucially the Club had two bars and a 24 hour licence. Initially the trio from 3RRR took over the club on Friday nights only , and then other nights followed. In 1983 graphic Designer Robert Pearce was commissioned to design this poster for The Hardware Club.
