Peter GEORGAKIS Peter Georgakis completed his secondary education in Colac. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at University of Ballarat (now Federation University). The following year he successfully completed an Honours, Creative Fine Arts. He was the recipient of the 2012 Martha Pinkerton Award. This artwork was purchased at the University of Ballarat End of Year Exhibition for the collection by Vice Chancellor David Battersby. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Abstract ArtPeter GEORGAKIS Peter Georgakis focuses on exploring the concept of cognitive distortions and their relationship towards the physical and figurative. By utilising and relating a variety of figurative and physical imagery, he depicts the fragmentation and explosion of an interior visual landscape within distorted thought processes. This work portrays a wide array of distorted cognitive responses in a very visceral and disordering application. His works convey and visualise this response by using a variety of different software, including medical imaging, sound to image and experimental visualisation techniques. With such software applications, he has been able to digitally manipulate figurative and physical imagery in an unorthodox manner. Through this lens of a variety of software applications, he has been able to experiment and explore a vast range of cognitive distortions and their relationship towards the physical image. art, artwork, printmaking, peter georgakis -

Poster, Public Meeting at Ballarat to Fight TAFE Cuts, June 2012
In October 2011 the Ballieu Government announced funding cuts to public and private technical training organisations as a cost saving measure. The government reduced funding for seven subject areas including business and clerical, finance and hospitality, totaling $300 million across the state. During a visit to Ballarat on 15 June 2012 Premier Ted Ballieu was met by hundreds of protestors angry at the TAFE cuts. It was expected that the Ballarat TAFE sector would be cut by $20million (or 40%), and up to 60 TAFE programs would be cut. A report in 'The Australian' on 01 June 2012 projected the TAFE cuts would result in the loss of almost 2000 jobs across the state. 'If the projections are correct, Victorian college redundancies would dwarf those in manufacturing and aviation, matching the worst predictions of job losses across Australia's entire banking sector.' Ballarat's National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council (BTLC) are following up their earlier protest campaigns with a monster meeting to be held at Ballarat Trades Hall, Camp Street on Sunday 8 July. The monster meetings will take place in close proximity to Bakery Hill where over 10,000 diggers protested against an the gold license system in 1854. .1) A brown and black Monster Meeting poster based on the Eureka Monster Meeting poster. Ballarat Clarendon College
Honour board, Ballarat College Dux
This was the second honour board created by Ballarat College to honour the top academic student of each year. The first award was given in 1868 four years after the school opened. Dux of College honour boards were on display in the Assembly Hall (Sturt Street building north wing). They are featured in 1918 photographs of the Assembly Hall. The three boards cover the following years: 1868 - 1895 (partially defaced), 1896 - 1921 (completely defaced) and 1922 - 1952 (complete). This new board replacing the originals were created prior to the centenary celebration in 1964 and hung in the Memorial Hall. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) this board was co-opted to honour Middle School Dux. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - ) This board emphasizes the value placed on academic excellence by the school from its earliest beginnings. That the boards have been maintained and consistently displayed in significant places of honour within the school only further emphasizes the historial and social significance of the award 'Dux of school'. Large varnished wooden board with wood frame, four rectangular relief boards and one heading relief board. Two men and a woman are standing on the near side of the fenced-off gully, another group people, perhaps two men and four women and girls, are sitting and standing on the far side of the gully, and a further two people are at the right of the photo. There are trees and tree ferns in the background and two signs are visible, attached to trees and possibly pertaining to a guesthouse further up the hill and accessible by a path which is just visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen. -

Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Digital image, c.1922
The photograph appeared in the MDNS Annual Report of 1922 and is taken on the veranda of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Nurses Home at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood. The Sisters lived and worked out of the Nurses Home from June 1914 to 1953. They attended the disadvantaged in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. The Sisters and Matron are wearing the grey uniform and hat with a red Maltese cross is in the centre of the hatband which was introduced in 1921. These Sisters, plus two others visited 29.079 visits in the metropolitan area and in suburbs as far distant as Elwood, Glen Huntly, Deepdene, Essendon and Fairfield. Of the 1666 patients on the books 394 were midwifery patients nursed in their own homes. It is believed the Matron in the photograph is Matron Reynolds. In February 1885 it was recognized that nursing care was needed for the sick poor in inner Melbourne. The Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) was founded on the 17th of February with one Trained nurse (Nurse) who qualified under the Hospital training system, commencing on the 1st of May, and a second employed six months later, both working in the now CBD, ie from Spencer Street to Spring Street and from Victoria Parade to Flinders Street. From its inception the Society was at the forefront of health care. They provided high quality nursing care; educated their patients in the curing and prevention of disease; teaching the importance of cleanliness and good nutrition, both by verbal instruction and demonstration, even supplying soup and milk when needed. At that time they walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of inner Melbourne carrying their nursing bag containing lotion, ointments, powders, liniment, bandages, dressings, a case of spirits, and the Nurse's own clean apron. The also supplied equipment, such as earthenware hot water bottles, splints, urinals, bed pans, bed cradles, feeding mugs, and air-cushions as well as providing clean bed linen and nightdresses and clothes as necessary. In 1891 the first Nurses Home was rented for 1 year at £65 per annum at 66 Cardigan Street, Carlton; Nurses wages were now £60 per annum. A Doctor gave lectures from the Home to the public on the understanding and prevention of diseases. The Society decided to commence a Midwifery Service and Nurse Fowler, who had previously worked for the Society, was re-employed as their first trained Midwife. She began home births in August 1893 giving them Ante Natal care, taking midwifery bundles and providing clothes for the babe as needed. Following birth, she gave Post-natal care to the mother and babe twice a day for three days and then daily for a week, and longer if required. She resigned after twelve months and Nurse Wilkie was appointed to the position. As well as walking, the Nurses used Public transport in the limited areas it ran, though a taxi was used by the Nurses and Midwife in emergencies and at night. Late in 1891 the Society moved to larger rented premises at 49 Drummond Street and in 1902 moved to 188 Leicester Street, Carlton. The Nurses were becoming exhausted, particularly in the heat of summer. Permission to use bicycles was given to them in 1898 and the Society decided to purchase their own in 1903. A business man offered ‘new free wheel’ bicycles at £13 each, which included maintenance for one year. Bells and wooden frames were added at a cost of £5 per frame so the Nurses could carry extra equipment. Nurses bags were strapped to the handlebars. Soup was made for those in need 2-3 times a week, and if patients could not arrange to have it collected, the soup was delivered by the Nurses on their bicycles. Their use caused a change in uniform, with white pith helmets, and veils covering them and tied under their chins, now being used. In 1904 the Society relocated to rented premises at 5 Royal Terrace, Nicholson Street in Fitzroy. In 1913 a Nurse had her ‘board and residence, uniforms, bicycles and laundry expenses’ provided and was paid £50 a year for her first six months. At the end of a year her salary was increased by £5, and later she earned £60 a year. Over the years the Nurses complained their veils became wet in the rain and asked for a change of uniform, but this did not occur until 1921. In 1914 the Society was at last able to purchase their own premises, 'Floraston' 39 Victoria Parade in Collingwood. During the Spanish Influenza epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford 'T Model' cars were procured which enabled the Nurses to triple their visits. It was recorded on the 21st of May, that the seven Nurses had visited 1,212 persons with influenza in the last three months, how many visits to each is not known. In the whole of 1918 the Nurses, including midwifery cases, visited 1,100 persons. It was also recorded on May 7th the Nurses were delivering 100 quarts of soup to the needy each morning. In winter they also carried wood in the cars to distribute to their destitute patients as needed. In 1921-22 many of the people nursed by the Trained nurses (Sisters) suffered from malignant and tubercular disease, often the Sister would visit to find the patient was desperately ill living in a room alone and no one there to even give them a drink. In these cases the Sister would send them to hospital, but if possible most cases were nursed in their home. During July 1921- 30 June 1922 the four Midwifery trained Sisters averaged 8 confinement cases a week and sometimes gave Post Natal care to 15 to 18 patients a day. At the time of confinement a Student from the Women's Hospital accompanied the MDNS Sister and if complications occurred the patient was transferred to the Women's Hospital. The Society often had to provide blankets, sheets, set of baby clothes and night gowns for the mother. In many instances the Society provided milk for many months. The midwifery Sisters often travelled long distances in the cars Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state they were sold in 1927 and the Sisters went back to using public transport, as well as their bicycles which continued to be used in inner areas until 1945.. The Midwives used taxis when a birth was imminent. Black and white photograph showing 9 Sisters, 5 standing at rear and Matron, in the centre, of 4 seated Sisters on a balcony wearing their Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) uniforms of grey coats, with revered collars and belt, over their partly seen grey uniforms with white collars. Five of the Sisters are wearing glasses. All are wearing grey brimmed hats with a Maltese cross in the centre of the lighter colour hatband. Part of deep metal scroll work of the veranda rail can be seen. Document, Bereavement Card
This is a card sent by the Fulton family in1922 thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building which still stands was erected in 1877. Percival Fulton, who lived at 54 Ryot Street Warrnambool, was aged 62 when he died. He was the son of General John Fulton and Ellen Fulton nee Wroughton and the husband of Charlotte Fulton nee Trollope and is buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery. This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the early 1900s – a plain card with a black edging. These cards could be purchased in bulk with a blank sheet for inserting the relevant details. The connection to the Fulton family and the Warrnambool Club is also of interest. This is a cream-coloured card with black edging and printed and handwritten material. It has a small slit in the top left hand corner indicating it has been pinned to a noticeboard or wall. ‘To the President and Members of the Warrnambool Club’ ‘Mrs Fulton and Family desire to thank you for your kind sympathy in their recent bereavement’ ‘Ryot Street, Warrnambool, November 1922’ fulton family, warrnambool club -

Equipment - Lifebuoy, John Murch, 1922
Lifebuoy is from the ketch Reginald M, built in Port Adelaide by John Murch in 1922. Lifebuoys were part of the emergency lifesaving equipment carried on vessels in the late 19th and early 20th century. The ring was made of strips of cork wood joined together to make the ring shape then covered in canvas and sealed usually with white paint. Four evenly spaced canvas reinforcing bands would be added for strength and for a place to thread a rope or line. A lifebuoy, or life-preserver, is used as a buoyancy device often thrown to an endangered or distressed person in the water to keep them afloat while they receive help. It is usually connected by a rope to a person in a safe area such a nearby vessel or on shore. Lifebuoys is a made from a buoyant materials such as cork or foam and ae usually covered with canvas for protection and to make it easy to grip. The first use of life saving devices in recent centuries was by the Nordic people, who used light weight wood or cork blocks to keep afloat. Cork lifebuoys were used from the late 19th to early 20th century. Kapok fibre was then used as a filling for buoys but wasn’t entirely successful. Light weight balsa wood was used as a filler after WW1. In 1928 Peter Markus invented and patented the first inflatable life-preserver. By WW2 foam was combined with Kapok. Laws were passed over time that has required aeroplanes and water going-vessels to carry life-preservers on board. The Reginald M 1922- The two-masted coastal trading ketch Reginald M was built by John (Jack) Murch in Port Adelaide, South Australia, in 1922 and it was launched there in Largs Bay in the same year. It is thought that the keel was hewn from two telegraph poles - its owner was a regular visitor to salvage yards. Its cargo at times included Guano, Barley, Wool, Horses, Cattle, Timber, Explosives, Potatoes, Shell Grit and Gypsum. At one time the vessel was used as a customs boat, renamed 'HMC No. 3, Pt Adelaide'. In 1969 she was used by a mining and railway company as a barge to carry explosives. In 1972 the vessel was renamed 'T.S. Macquarie' and planned to be used for sea cadet training.; this did not eventuate. It was sold again and went to Melbourne to be used for pleasure sailing, and again sold for use as a ferry. Late in 1975 Flagstaff Hill purchased the vessel to be used as an exhibit at the Maritime Village where many visitors enjoyed being able to board and explore a real ship with a long history. Sadly, in late 2016, the decision was made to 'decommission' the vessel due to the continuing high cost of maintenance and the risk to public safety. Many of the components of the vessel are held as part of Flagstaff Hill's collection. The lifebuoy is an example of equipment carried on vessels in the late 19th and early 20th century to help preserve life. There were many lives lost in Australia’s colonial period, particularly along the coast of South West Victoria. The lifebuoy is significant for its connection with the Australian built, 1922 coastal trader, Reginald M. Lifebuoy, round , cork, filled, white canvas cover with four red tabs. Text is printed in black on quarters 1 and 3. This lifebuoy once belonged to the vessel 'Reginald M' , Pt Adelaide. Print - Vessel - Sailing Ship, A.V. Gregory, ca. 1899-1922
This photograph is a print from an original painting by the Australian marine artist A V Gregory (1867-1957), also known as Arthur Victor Gregory. Gregory lived and worked in South Melbourne. He took over the Gregory Studio owned by his father, George Frederick Gregory, painting actively between 1899 and 1932. He usually signed his works as ‘A V Gregory’. Some of his original works have been sold for thousands of dollars. The four-masted iron barque 'Rowena' was built in 1883 by Barclay, Curle & Co. of Glasgow as the 'Cluny Castle', and renamed about 1890 as 'Rowena' by owners Rowena Ship Co.. After consequent owners, the ship was converted to a hulk in 1922 at Port Adelaide. The detailed image of the vessel depicted in this print shows one of the many sail and steam vessels painted by the renowned Victorian marine artist A V Gregory, whose original works are highly valued today by marine collectors.Photograph of a print, black and white, mounted onto card. Artwork, other - Artwork, "West Park Proposition' by Ash Keating, 2013
Ash KEATING Among fifteen finalists this artwork won the 2012 Guirguis New Art Prize, a prestigious national acquisitive biennial art prize administered by Federation University Australia. The Guirguis New Art Prize (GNAP) is a national acquisitive $20,000 contemporary art prize which presents a selection of Australia's most exciting contemporary artists with works that explore and embrace new ways of artistic expression, utilising existing mediums and new technologies in innovative ways. Initiated and generously supported by local Ballarat surgeon Mr Mark Guirguis, this prestigious art prize is administered by the Federation University Australia (FedUni). As a local philanthropist and art collector, in developing the Prize, Mark Guirguis' aims were to celebrate the significance of the arts to communities and to Ballarat, emphasising contemporary art and 'living' culture, and to highlight FedUni's Arts Academy. Artist Ash Keating works across a conceptual, site-responsive and often collaborative art practice that incorporates painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance and public interventions, and has referenced a wide range of social and environmental issues within his art. Frequently working beyond the gallery, and often harnessing community narrative and energy, his work also draws upon myth, ritual and ceremony. 'West Park Proposition', 2012, is a three channel and screen video installation, utilising multiple camera video documentation of an endurance painting intervention undertaken on the morning of 01 September 2012 on the east facing wall of a newly built tilt-slab industrial building, situated on the direct edge of the current urban and rural boundary in Truganina, Victoria. The multi-screen work documents an endurance guerilla-style action painting intervention and ritualised painting performance in which a symbolic violence is enacted against a storehouse of commodity production and consumption. Upon winning the award artists Ash Keating said; “The work was made near Ballarat on the Deer Park bypass. It is an aesthetic comment about the way these new tilt-slab industrial buildings spring up without caring for the environment." The work, which took eight hours to create, was about reclaiming the space from “cost-effective architecture” without any aesthetics. The inaugural judge for the Prize, Jason Smith, Director, Heide Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) said, "Selecting the winner of this inaugural GNAP was exhilarating and excruciating: exhilarating because the seriousness of each artist's enterprise, and their uncompromising resolution of concepts, has created an inaugural exhibition of exceptional power. This first GNAP is a survey of some of the most poetic and provocative imaginations working in Australia today. Selecting one winner from such a show in which each of these artists has in some way transformed my thinking about the world was the excruciating part. Ash Keating's work West Park Proposition, 2012 kept drawing me back in the several hours I spent viewing the works. It simultaneously affirms the political and critical role of the artist as a key agent of change and action, and someone who reminds us of the beauty and resilience of humanity and nature in the face of unrelenting change. As a work combining performance, collaboration and hope, Keating's West Park Proposition is a work of immense and compelling poetry."artist, artwork, keating, ash keating, guirguis, guirguis new art prize, gnap, gnap13 -
