This document shows that Mary Irwin of Peterborough, Victoria, died in April 1892 without making a will and the Letters of Administration were granted to her husband, William Irwin. However he died in 1901 without having fully administered Mary Irwin’s estate. In turn the estate administration was passed over to Charles McGillivray of Peterborough and one of Mary Irwin’s sons, William Irwin, residing in New Zealand. This document was drawn up in 1907, fifteen years after Mary Irwin’s death. She left property to the value of £100. No other details on Mary Irwin are available. Tait collection: item 11 of 62This document is of interest because it was drawn up by a local Warrnambool solicitor, Ernest Chamber. He had a practice in Kepler Street, Warrnambool with the known dates, 1897 to 1910, with other offices in Koroit and Port Fairy during the same time. His manager in Warrnambool was Thomas Goodall who appears to have passed this document on to lawyers continuing on in the Kepler Street premises until it was found in the building once used by the legal business of Mackay Taylor.This is a piece of parchment paper folded in two and written on the back and front in brown-coloured ink (perhaps originally black). There is a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria attached with a green ribbon and three red stamps of the Master in Equity in the Supreme Court. This item belonged to Alan Richardson, a sawmiller at Tabbara. He helped to build and held a ticket for the paddle steamer "Curlip". He was a member of the Rechabites from March 3 1892. The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. It was named after Rechab, a leader in the Old Testament, who instructed his tribe to refrain from drinking alcohol. During the Industrial Revolution the idea of temperance became popular as damage was caused to families by alcohol. In Australia it was first established in Tasmania in the mid 1800s. In 1847 a branch was created in Victoria, and it then spread to other States. Members were provided with assistance during times of sickness, death and hardship. This item is associated with the Richardson family, early settlers in the Orbost district.A small grey book with a black spine. The title and details are in black print. Whitmuir Hall was built 1850 using bricks hand -made from the clay of nearby Elster Creek. Early history of the 156 acre estate bounded by McKinnon, Centre, Thomas and Wheatley Roads is obscure. The gardens were laid out prior to 1850. Robert Gray Ford purchased 20 acres with mansion in 1872 for £ 1750 and it was valued at £ 25,000 in 1888 but sold after the Bank Crash 1890's for £ 5,000 in 1892. There were many owners over the years including Thomas Bent and in 1870 it was called 'Killearnan'. It is now is known as 'the Bentleigh Club and many original features have been restored and preserved . Whitmuir Hall, was a stately mansion built 1850 typical of the grandiose plans of successful early settlers. The Tower Hill Reserve is located inside a dormant volcano, and features a lake and wetlands. It became Victoria's first national park in 1892, but by the 1930s the early settlers had cleared much of the land for grazing, cropping and quarrying. In the 1960s the bare hills and islands were revegetated based in species identified from Eugene von Guerard's painting of Tower Hill. Tower Hill was formed around 30,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The initial eruption created the outer rim of the volcano, and later smaller eruptions formed the internal hills that are evident today. The first service of the Surrey Hills Presbyterian Church was held at ‘Kinnoul’, the home of Thomas Hogg, located in The Avenue. This was while the church was being built. St Stephens Presbyterian Church opened in March 1899 on land that had previously been part of Klepper's orchard. The first minister was Rev F A Darling. He resigned in 1892 to open Surrey College. The church building pictured was built in 1910 adjacent on land gifted to the church. Noted features of the interior are the pulpit and honor board carved by sculptor John Kendrick Blogg. North east Victoria was a major dairy producing region in the late nineteenth century. The first iteration of the Wodonga Butter Factory Ltd was established in 1892. Dairy was sent from farmers across the district for processing at the factory in Wodonga in the 1890s. Victorian creameries regularly exported frozen butter to London, stock was transported by rail for sale in Melbourne, and of course sold and consumed locally. E.W. Mann, of the prominent local Wodonga family, was a shareholder and was closely involved in the establishment of the Wodonga Butter Company. Many families living on farms also owned their own cow, and had equipment to process their own dairy products at home. This item has strong links to the history of Wodonga and north east Victoria. The postcards are addressed to Mrs Dickson, Miss Weeks, Mrs Kiernan and include one from Fred Hall AIF 1915 from Egypt. Miss Weeks was possibly Bertha Alma Weeks 1873-1952, m. George Patrick Kiernan, 1877-1961. There were several Mrs Dickson's including Emma ( nee Wainwright), who was married in 1900 to Archibald John Dickson (1855-1930) and Laura (nee Kreymborg), who was married in 1901 to James Thomas Dickson (1864-1911). The parents of Archibald and James Thomas were Euphemia (nee Brown) 1826-1907 and James T. Dickson (1853-1897). Postcards were ideal for short messages, they were cheap to buy and post, and they moved through rapidly improving transport networks. They are interesting contemporary records of places gone, architecture gone and people gone. This item reflects a contemporary form of communication in the early 20th century.Two cardboard covered albums containing post card collections. These gramophone needles were manufactured by The Gramophone Company Limited for use in gramophones that had an arm in which to insert a needle to play an old shellac record. The Gramophone Company was an early recording company based in the United Kingdom and was the parent organization for the His Master’s Voice label of recording devices. The company was founded in 1897 and merged in 1931 with another company to form E.M.I. (Electric and Musical Industries) but the name The Gramophone Company continued in Britain until the 1970s. Gramophones were a popular household item from the late 19th century until the mid 20th century when more sophisticated recording and playing devices were invented. These gramophone needles is of some interest as an example of entertainment devices of the past. It will be useful for display. .1This is a metal box with a lid containing an image of a dog and a phonograph (‘His Master’s Voice’) painted in white and brown on a dark blue background. Inside the tin are about 150 metal gramophone needles, most of them being a little rusted. The needles are covered with a sheet of brown paper with yellow printing. The tin itself is rusted and the printing is discoloured. This album is believed to have belonged to Jessie Bonnett ( 1897-1990) the daughter of Frederick and Charity (nee Phillips) Bonnett. Jessie spent her life on the family farm at Mepunga. She was a keen collector of newspaper cuttings recipes, postcards and collectable cards of the day. She won prizes at the local agricultural show for her flower collections. Most young girls early to mid 20th century had autograph albums Today the entries in these are a source of great social history. This album contains many local names of the time (Flett, Wiggs, Jenkinson Philips, Hortle etc.) and there are several interesting sketches and works of art. This album is of considerable significance as it was owned by Jessie Bonnett a member of a pioneer family in the Mepunga district. It is an important contribution to social history (1910 -12).This is an autograph album with a dark red leather cover. William Baragwanath joined the Victorian Department of Mines in 1897, was director of the geological survey (1922-4), Chief Mining Surveyor (1924-43), Secretary for Mines (1932-34), consultant to the Department of Mines (1943-50) . He was born at Durham Lead on 1 August 1878 and was a former student of the Ballarat School of Mines. Baragwanath was president of the Royal society of Victoria (1943-44) and a councillor of the Ballarat School of Mines (1916-1950). After Baragwanath's death on 20 September 1966 the Department of Minerals and Energy (Geological Survey division) donated a number of Baragwanath's items to the Ballarat School of Mines, including this collection. Alexander Peacock was born in Creswick, Victoria in 1861. Upon leaving school he mined and was legal manager of mining companies in Ballarat. In 1882 he joined the Creswick branch of the Australian Natives' Association (ANA) and became branch secretary. He stood for parlimnet in March 189 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing Clunes and Allandale. Peacock assisted in the establishment f the Clunes Branch of the Ballarat School of MInes which opened in 1890. He was one of the Victorian delegates to teh Federal Convention in 1897. He laid the foundation stone of the new SMB Classroom building in 1899 while MInister for Public Instruction. Ernest Morton Vains (1881 - 1951) was a local business man and Bendigo councillor who arrived in Bendigo in 1897 aged 16 from Kerang. In 1916 he founded the firm E M Vains and Co with his brother Sidney and they operated from Hargreaves Street in Bendigo with branches in Elmore, Mitiamo, Dingee, Knowsley, Heathcote and Prairie. E. M. Vains was a member of the City Council from 1922 - 1926 and was elected Mayor on August 29th, 1924. He played a prominent role in many of the City's community and industry groups and was a member of the Rotary Club which was founded in 1925 and a member of the Corona Lodge of Freemasons. Printed on inside back cover is ''Record of Fire Policies and unused columns for such information - there are 'scribbles' on both inside front and back covers with the repeated (child's?) initials of EJH. A printed date may have been altered to be 1892. The rhyme ''Ten Little Nigger Boys'' (12 illustrations) are on four of the loose pages and three English monarchs are grouped on the other loose page. Thomas Langdon (1832-1914) was born in Somerset, England and came to Australia in 1853. He started in Bendigo as a miner and carter before beginning farming at Laanacoorie. He married twice; Esther Temlett in 1855 and Sarah Coventry in 1862. He was elected to the Marong Shire Council in 1871 and went on to become a member of the Victorian parliament. These items were donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. The East Gippsland Region Water Authority was constituted on January 1, 1995. The new Authority assumed responsibility for the services previously provided by the Mitchell Water Board, the Tambo Water Board, the Orbost Water Board and the Mallacoota Water Board. East Gippsland Water is the registered business name of the East Gippsland Region Water Authority. (info. from P.R.O.) North east Victoria was a major dairy producing region in the late nineteenth century. The Wodonga Butter Factory Ltd was established in 1892. Many families living in the town or on farms also owned their own cow for family needs and produced their milk and butter. This churn is representative of the equipment they used to process their own dairy products at home. This churn was made by E. Cherry & Sons which was established in Gisborne, Victoria in 1858. Edward Cherry (1830-1910) arrived in Australia from Hertfordshire, England, in 1855. The business manufactured churns and in 1875 opened a larger factory. On his death, the business was taken over by his son and continued to operate until the 1970s.This item has strong links to the history of Wodonga and north east Victoria. It has interpretative potential in the areas of local agricultural history, and the social history of food and farming.A wooden butter churn with metal turning handle and removable lid. The wooden paddle inside is attached to the turning handle which rotates to churn the butter. The model number is T1. Whitty to 1901, Elizabeth Kyhat to 1944, Harry Kuhl , 1955-1967. When Harry died, Roy West 1967-1970 when the license was surrendered. The building is now a shopping arcade. Prestige Limited was formed in 1922 by George Foletta to manufacture fine silken hosiery. The company had acquired the Atlas Knitting and Spinning Mills Pty Ltd which had been established in 1920 and produced "Prestige hosiery" from 1921. Prestige Limited merged with Holeproof Hosiery Company (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1964. Both were taken over by Pacific Dunlop in 1968. The Prestige name was dropped in 1978/79. George Gotardo Foletta (1892-1973), hosiery and knitwear manufacturer, was born on 30 January 1892 at Northcote, Melbourne, eldest son of Victorian-born parents Henry Gotardo Foletta, a stonemason of Swiss extraction, and his wife Gertrude, née Bright. Henry repaired the depression-ravaged fortunes of his family by starting a successful fancy goods commission-agency.....George persuaded the demoralized board to restructure around a quality-first marketing policy. By 1924, when George A. Bond & Co. Ltd ( Sydney) was liquidated, Prestige was back in the black. About this time the company became the first Australian knitter to make fully-fashioned silk stockings, outselling the best imported brands and giving Prestige dominance of the local hosiery market. With the arrival of British-trained Leslie Gough in 1926, Prestige entered its period of greatest expansion.
