Document, The origin and growth of the Legacy movement in Australia (H64), 1967
Photocopy of an article written by Ian Anderson (past president of Melbourne Legacy) for the Victorian Historical Magazine, 149th issue, August 1967, which was taken from his address to the Society on Tuesday 23 May 1967. It describes the founding of Legacy and the role of founding legatees. The magazine is available at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, but has not yet been digitised to read on line. Photograph, Sale of Harelands renamed Blamey House
From the 1940s Melbourne Legacy ran residences for children of deceased servicemen. In the 1980s it was decided to sell the final property as the requirement for care had dwindled. These photos show the auction day at Blamey House (previously known as Harelands), from the street the auction flag and 'For Sale' sign can be seen. The photos show a large group of people watching the auction names are unknown. The property at 5 Willesmere Rd Kew was formerly known as Harelands. It was renamed Blamey House when the previous Blamey House (at 1267 Burke Road) was sold in late 1970s. It was the third Legacy residence to use the name Blamey House as it was a condition of the donation to keep the name. The sale of Blamey House was a milestone in the residences history and these photos are from the day of the auction.Colour photo x 7 of the auction sale of Blamey House.residences, properties, harelands, blamey house -

Equipment - Platform Scales
Large platform scales such as these ones made by W. & T. Avery were used for weighing goods for trading and passengers' luggage. They would be used in places such as railway stations, shipping ports, customs offices and ticketing offices. Often fees would be charged to customers according to the weight of their goods and luggage. Items would be placed onto the large horizontal platform then weights would be added to the weighing bar until the bar leveled to being horizontal. The weights would be added together and the total of the weights would be used for the final figure. These scales were made in Birmingham, England, by the British company, W and T Avery. The company had its origins in the early 1700s but only became known as W and T Avery when the brothers William and Thomas Avery inherited the scale-making business from a relative, Joseph Balden, on his death in 1813. By 1885 they had three factories and In 1895, the company acquired James Watt & Co and two years later had moved to the 25-acre Soho Foundry site in Smethwick, Birmingham where James Watt had manufactured steam engines. When the last Avery family member died in 1918, the company employed over 3,000 people and had businesses all over the world. Following the highly successful introduction of the first digital retail scale in 1971, the company was taken over by the GEC Group in 1979. The business was subsequently acquired by the American company, Weigh-Tronix, in 2000 which had already acquired a competitor, Salter. The Avery name continues today in the company known as Avery Weigh-Tronix.An item that was used at the turn of the century as train platform scales or for weighing agricultural products. Made by a company that pioneered weighing equipment with offices all over the world. With many examples of this scale in museums throughout the world. Platform scales with wheels. Letter book 7, 1917-1920, 1917
This letter book contains handwritten letters, sketch maps and plans and dates from 1917 to 1920. It comes from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording 132 years of service with the Shire of Warrnambool. The Shire existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was passed on to John Crawley’s son, Rolf, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The letter book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society then acquired this letter book, along with other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand estate. This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains letters, plans and maps drawn up John William Crawley Junior, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. It will be very useful for research. This is a hard cover book of 745 pages. It has leather trim on the cover edges and the spine with gold lettering on the spine. The leather covering is scuffed and torn. The inside covers have a mottled blue lining. The book contains maps, plans and handwritten letters and has an alphabetical index at the beginning of the book. Most of the pages have been water-stained. ‘7 Private’ ‘Letter Book 1917 to 1920’john william crawley junior, warrnambool, rolf crawley, warrnambool, shire of warrnambool -

Kitchen Equipment, china meat platter, c1900
Wedgwood was founded on 1 May 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood and in 1987 merged with Waterford Crystal to create Waterford Wedgwood, an Ireland-based luxury brands group. After the 2009 purchase by KPS Capital, Wedgwood became part of a group of companies known as WWRD Holdings Ltd, an acronym for "Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton." In 1765, Josiah Wedgwood created a new earthenware form which impressed the then British Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who gave permission to call it "Queen's Ware"; this new form sold extremely well across Europe. Wedgwood developed a number of further industrial innovations for his company, notably a way of measuring kiln temperatures accurately and new ware types Black Basalt and Jasper Ware. Wedgwood's most famous ware is jasperware. It was created to look like ancient cameo glass. It was inspired by the Portland Vase, a Roman vessel. Wedgwood had increasing success with hard paste porcelain which attempted to imitate the whiteness of tea-ware imported from China. High transportation costs and the demanding journey from the Far East meant that the supply of chinaware could not keep up with increasingly high demand. In 1812 Wedgwood produced their own bone china which, though not a commercial success at first eventually became an important part of an extremely profitable business.
