Photograph - Surf Carnival, Newfield Bay, Jocelyn Burt
Unusual choice of location by Port Campbell Surf club due to Port Campbell beach being too small. The Surf Carnival was held at Newfield Bay (possibly for two years running). Eyewitness accounts advise that one year the surf was so rough that the event was abandoned. This photograph appears to show calmer sea. In order to get the surf boats onto the beach a track was bulldozed over the sand dunes. Spectators cars were parked in the area which is now the airstrip, on the corner of the Port Campbell Peterborough Road and the Timboon Peterborough road.Town eventOriginal photograph of the surf carnival, taken from the west looking towards the east, with the Crown of thorns visible in the background. Surf boats are on the beach and umbrellas are visible. Occurred in the early 1970's.Written on the back is Jocelyn Burt, who is a photographer.newfield bay, surf lifesaving carnival, peterborough, jocelyn burt, crown of thorns rock formation -

Pastel Portrait, A portrait of Friedrich Goldschmied
This pastel portrait by Robert Hofmann is of Friedrich Goldschmied. He was born in a Polish village on 28 May 1912, then part of the Austrian - Hungarian empire, but lived for the early part of his life in Vienna. By 1938/39 he and his stepfather, as Jews, fled across Europe and somehow ended up in England by 1940. His Mother, who refused to believe the danger, sadly ended up in one of the camps. In England he was interned as an enemy alien on the Isle of Man. Refusing to join the Pioneer Corps he was a passenger on the notorious Dunera. I am sure you know this nasty bit of history and remained in the camp in Tatura, as far as I know, until returning to England in 1947. As you see from the portrait it was drawn in 1941 by Robert Hofmann, also an internee in Tatura. He married in 11 February 1954 and died in 29 October 1978. His wife died last year (2014).This portrait was drawn by Robert Hofmann, in camp 2 at Tatura. Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages
Book, Helen Gardner et al, Southern Anthropology : a History of Fison and Howitt's Kamilaroi and Kurnai, 2015
From far-flung sites in Australia and the Pacific Islands, Lorimer Fison and A. W. Howitt produced the landmark study, 'Kamilaroi and Kurnai' (1880). Their book revealed the complexity of Aboriginal and Pacific Island societies and changed the course of anthropology in the early years of the discipline. Using archival sources and an innovative approach, Southern Anthropology explores the research, writing and reception of 'Kamilaroi and Kurnai'. Historical chapters track Fison and Howitt's collection and analysis of anthropological material in the context of raging debates about the evolution of humans. This narrative is interspersed with an introduction to the kinship and social organisation of Aboriginal and Pacific Island people that highlight the enduring value of Fison and Howitt's methods and the resurgence of their questions in contemporary anthropology. Southern Anthropology is designed to be read across disciplinary boundaries. b&w illustrations, b&w photographs, tables, document reproductionshistories, anthropology, howitt, fisson, kamilaroi, kurnai, evolution, archives, australia -
Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages
Book, Harold Koch, Aboriginal placenames : naming and re-naming the Australian landscape, 2009
"Aboriginal approaches to the naming of places across Australia differ radically from the official introduced Anglo-Australian system. However, many of these earlier names have been incorporated into contemporary nomenclature, with considerable reinterpretations of their function and form. Recently, state jurisdictions have encouraged the adoption of a greater number of Indigenous names, sometimes alongside the accepted Anglo-Australian terms, around Sydney Harbour, for example. In some cases, the use of an introduced name, such as Gove, has been contested by local Indigenous people." "The 19 studies brought together in this book present an overview of current issues involving Indigenous placenames across the whole of Australia, drawing on the disciplines of geography, linguistics, history, and anthropology. They include meticulous studies of historical records, and perspectives stemming from contemporary Indigenous communities. The book includes a wealth of documentary information on some 400 specific placenames, including those of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, western Victoria, the Lake Eyre district, the Victoria River District, and southwestern Cape York Peninsula." -- Publisher description.
