Joh Ebeli and Russell Yeoman set up further items on the trailer loaned by Denis McKay. An important part of the event was the members who came along in their “old gear” to complete the picture. Postcard, "Charing Cross & View Point Bendigo", 1903
The photo shows three Bendigo California Combination single truck cars at Charing Cross, looking southwest with the Alexandria Fountain in the centre. Trams 5 and 14 are in the view along with another behind them. The Bendigo electric tram system commenced operations in 1903 and given the appearance of the roadways and tram tracks, the photo was taken soon after opening. In the view are the View Point Hotel, signs for Moran Cato, Coperative Distribution, W J Jackson Tailor, The Age and several horse-drawn cabs. Photo shows Brill 22E Maximum Traction bogie or truck - Geelong tramcar, has the SEC logo on the side of the tramcar in the view. One of a set of photos was taken between 15/2/1956 and 3/3/1956 when services operated only between Belmont and North before the final closure of the Belmont route on 25/31956 and that bogie tram 31 is not shown on the board, having gone to Ballarat on 15/2/1956 - see item 5554. Archive - Vertical file, Armitstead family
The Armitstead family's first woodyard in Surrey Hills was located in Croydon Road but later they moved to 153-157 Union Road, Surrey Hills. The business delivered timber and briquettes for heating to homes in the local area but also blocks of ice in the days before refrigerators were a usual household appliance. The timber was unloaded from railway trucks at a siding at Surrey Hills station; some came from the Armitstead's property of 130 acres of timbered land near Killara. They also sold mallee roots and briquettes.A vertical file containing the following documents: 1. Land Victoria map of Surrey Hills including Union Road from Bedford Street to Montrose Street, showing location of woodyard (undated) (1 A3 page). 2. Possibly ‘Sun’ article ‘When Surrey Hills ran short of wood’, Michael Sefton (undated) (1 page). 3. Plaque for the red mechanism of the weighbridge at Centre, by convenor, Surrey Hills Heritage Group, 12.11.2002 (1 page). 4. Prepared by Les Denmead, typed by PB. Ballarat - typed carbon copy - two sheets, are taped together. Gives details of where purchased from , date of purchase, type, body builder, seating capacity, overall length, overall height, overall width, condition of tram, trolley base, Lightning arrester, controller make and type, Truck Maker and type, type of truck, axle type, wheel base, axle diameter, motors type and maker, Motor horsepower, Armature bearings, suspension bearings, gear teeth, Air compressor make and type, Brake Valves make and type, Governor make and type, Weight in tons and details of advertising space in racks. At base has typed (original) list of trams of the two types, single truckers and bogie trams. List of trams includes the scrubber and No. 20 which was scrapped prior to system closure. Globe Hotel, High St Charlton, established 1874 by John Walsh. This is the third building on the site. The first was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. It was then rebuilt as a two-storey hotel in 1940. It closed as a hotel in the early 1970's and became offices and flats. The Charlton Gentlemen's Club on the RH side was established in 1900. Photo is part of a series of streetscapes taken in 1987 for the Charlton Shire.Colour photograph of two storey red brick building. Signage on the windows reads SOIL CONSERVATION AUTHORITY (not all words fully visible). A man on a cherry picker in front of building trimming a tree.
