The Puffing Billy Preservation Society came into existence by a popular desire to retain something of our narrow gauge railway past, leisurely in this age but a boon to the sparsely settled areas it served in the past. It served the Wangaratta-Whitefield line, the Upper Ferntree Gully-Gembrook line, the Colac-Beech Forest-Crowes line, and the Moe-Walhalla line, the last railway line served being the Colac-Beech Forest line. None of these railways were a paying proposition but they played an important part in the areas they served. Nowadays, the last bit of line is a portion of the Upper Ferntree Gully-Gembrook line, from Belgrave to Lakeside, run by the Society. The Engine Shed has several small NA-class locomotives with NBH excursion carriages, and at the moment the Garratt G class in pieces. Here comes Puffing Billy! It was attended by the Governor of Victoria, General Sir Dallas Brooks and his wife, Lady Brooks. This Bible was owned by Janet Hose (nee Murfitt) 1856-1947. She was married to George Hose and they lived in Warrnambool for all of their married life. They had eleven children and all the births and some of the deaths of the children are recorded in this little Bible. The book was purchased from James Hider who had been a carpenter, a land agent and a rate collector before he established a bookstore in Timor Street in the 1860s. He was heavily involved in community affairs, being a local Councillor and Mayor in 1868-9. He was also an early commercial photographer in Warrnambool. This small Bible is of great interest because of its connection to the Hose family in Warrnambool. In the book are recorded the births and deaths of members of the Hose family. It was a common custom in the 19th century to include family history details in family Bibles and some larger-style Bibles had pages specifically printed to include family history material. This Bible is also of antiquarian interest, an attractive item with its leather cover and gold clasp.This is a mottled brown leather-covered Bible of 840 pages. The pages are gilt-edged and there is a gold metal clasp to close over the pages. Inside the front and back pages there are signatures and other handwritten material, some written in black ink and some in pencil. There is also a label from the Warrnambool book shop and stationery store of James Hider. The inscription pages and the front cover are stained. This small film development system was developed by Kodak for the amateur photographer. It was a small portable system which made the development of film more accessible to the enthusiast.This is an interesting item and quite innovative and as such has historic and scientific and research significance.A stained wooden rectangular box with dovetailed corners and a lid which is loose and sits inside a ridge.There are two holes drilled in both the longer sides of the box. The lid has a smaller raised section with Kodak Film Tank in red and black text a paper chart is stuck to the underpart of the lid..The interior of the box is painted black and there is a metal cylindrical tin with a lid and inner section.There is a spool attached to one end of the box.There are four loose items, two long prongs with black plastic knobs, a similar length implement with a straight shaft and hooked section on the end and a metal spool.Kodak film Tank on the lid of the box and the lid of the cylinder.
