Printed colour postcard of the east end of Sturt St. from top of the Nichol and Allen Building in Grenville St looking west. Titled "Sturt St Ballarat" in the top left-hand corner. Has three ESCo trams in the image, at the east end of Sturt St. In the bottom left-hand corner is the number "300477" and the initials "JV" within a circle. A 2d Australian stamp, cancelled with the postmark "Burnie Tas 21Ap 34" is in the top centre of the postcard. Image taken early in the days of the Ballarat electric trams, with no windows and no rooftop destinations. Appears to be the same tram possibly three times - looking at the number on the tram in detail. On the rear of the postcard is the address to a "Mme Helen Ferrando, Sori, Genova Italy" in black handwritten ink, while in the left-hand half of the postcard, typed in light purple ink is "Arthur H. Rubock, 23 Wilmot St., Burnie, Tasmania USCE 23897" (could be US Corps of Engineers) and the postmark of "Sori Genova. / 28.5.34". The printer of the card is "The Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. Printed colour postcard of the intersection of Sturt St. looking west from the southeast corner of Lydiard St. In the bottom left-hand corner is the number "300479" and the initials "JV"? within a circle. In the view are Crockers and the Art Gallery Association buildings. The later became the SEC Ballarat city offices. Image possibly taken c1912 as the trams appear to have driver's windows. Car featured in photo is No. 17. Note on the position of the rear lifeguard area of the tram is the word "Summerscales". Titled "Sturt St from Lydiard St Ballarat" centrally along the top of the card. The printer/publisher of the card is "The Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. Ltd, Melbourne and Sydney". Twenty four page book including card covers on glossy paper titled "The Essendon Tramways" written by Jack Richardson, published by Traction Publications, Historical Series No. 153 in 1963. The story of the North Melbourne and Electric Tramway and Lighting Company. Note on page 3, advises that this book was the 2nd edition. Price at the time 3/- Details the historical background, a map of the tramway in 1906, relationship with the Victorian Railways, construction, rolling stock, carbarn, (depot) power station, overhead, takeover by the MMTB, connection to the City, 1963 map, expansion under the MMTB, services at the time of publication, Rolling Stock Roster, notes on some of the personnel of the tramway, junction details and dates of the various extensions etc. Includes a number of photographs, a list of railway and tramway books published by Traction Publications, a publishers note and on the rear cover a short biography on the author. 2459.1 - 1st edition of book - no cover page, rear cover remains. Tram fitted with a Suttons Pianos and Players roof ad board. Has an "Enter Front End" sign on the rear of the tram. Photo about the mid 1920's On the right hand edge of the photograph is a faint stamp "Richards & Co / Photos". Document - Letter and Envelope, 1937
Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Has a Australian 2d stamp (1936 South Australian Centenary) over the top right hand corner. Has been cut from a larger photograph. Handwritten notes in pencil noting the time of the photograph, the tram weight, couplings, lamp brackets, the possible purpose of the photograph, the incompleteness of the tram when compared to actual running condition. Dated 7/1/1940. Also notes on the 3 legged stool used by the horse tram drivers and the double decked buses operating then in Melbourne ( Bourke St.). Has sketch of the stool in ink. Printed colour postcard from top of the Town Hall, looking northwest with Snows building in the foreground looking west. Has a horse tram travelling up to Lydiard St. on the south side of Sturt St. Has the buildings on north side of Sturt St. in the view, including the central median reserve before the trees had grown. Titled "Shoppee and Alexandra Squares, Ballarat Vic." along the bottom edge. On the bottom of the postcard is a one line hand written message, ink fading, very hard to read. On rear of postcard is the address to a Mr Frank Tucker, Glencairn, Park Avenue, Harrogate, England. Has two Victorian stamps, half penny (green) and one penny (red) stamps. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC ticketing, governance and monitoring systems. The Pass could be issued to a person on the signature of the Manager for a specific reason. Style remained very similar to the end of the tramways.Light brown card (200 gsm) ticket with, printed in black ink - titled "Special Pass". Has number "099" stamped on. Form number "TYE 2-22" in top left hand corner. Has space for the name of the Bearer (issued to Mr. ...), Branch to be written, space for manager to sign with date .../.../193.... and expiry date of pass." and "3820" in bottom left hand corner. Conditions of use printed on rear. See also 69 for a later example of this type of pass. Yields information about industrial issues in Geelong over one man trams and rosters, and that Ballarat was keep advised of the situation. Also a travellers view of Ballarat trams.Set of three (two copies of each except the First Aid one), newspaper clippings from the Geelong Advertiser, 28/10/1952 cut out and pasted onto blue paper, with the Newspaper Name and date type on each piece. Items were pinned together with a typed memo on top - from the Manager of the Geelong Branch to Engineer and Manger Ballarat, dated 28/10/1952, sending the cuttings for information. Has SEC date stamp of 29 Oct. 1952 - see inscriptions. News items were: "Tramway Talks on Thursday" - noting tramway union to meet with SEC Geelong Manager Mr. T.A Farr on Thursday to submit alternative proposals, mainly in regards to new roster affect East Geelong, Geelong West, Eastern Park and Chilwell routes. New roster schedule to come in on 1 November. "Transport Services" - letter to the editor, signed "Reasonable Service" about the writers trip to Ballarat on one of the new diesel rail motor, poor track and the higher measure of patronage on Ballarat's tram and that one of the seats have been removed for prams. "First Aid Team in Final" - about the success of the SEC Geelong team in the Safety Branch Shield competition. Tram services were disrupted as a result. Photo taken 23/4/1965, published 24/4/1965. Shows three SEC vehicles in use, including the tower truck. Yields information about the nature of the day on the last full day of operation in Sturt St and how passengers boarded the tram from the median strip.Black and White copy photographs of a newspaper photograph taken by The Courier - photo taken 18/9/1971, one published 20/9/1971 of No. 40 picks up shoppers, Sturt & Dawson Sts corner, last Saturday of service. 3772.1 - Shows two ladies boarding the tram from a crossover over the gutter. 3772.2 - shows the tram just after it left the stop. Has the Ritzy Cafe in the background. Also has a "Cars Stop Here" and a "End of Section sign in the photograph, that looks back along Sturt St. Tram has the destination of Sebastopol. Demonstrates the evolution of public transport in Ballarat, from tram to bus with the first of the replacement buses adjacent to a tram about to be phased out.Black and White copy photograph of a newspaper photograph taken by The Courier - photo taken 17/8/1971 and published in the Courier Supplement of 20/9/1971, showing first tramway replacement bus near Grenville St loop, August 1971 (another pic of the bus was published on 18/8/1971). Shows a Davis Bus with four drivers standing along side with three single truck trams in the loop - No. 13 at the rear. Has the Camp Hotel and the Ballarat Courier Offices in the background. Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory Melbourne, 1950's
3044.1 SEC (Geelong) Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior. Black plastic peak fitted with cap or with four holes for the employee badge number in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Sewn on the inside is a label "Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory Melbourne" and stamped "7 3/8". The plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side is not present. The holes for this are not visible - may not have been present on Geelong caps? 3044.2 - two small SEC Button badge - nickel plated silver with "Stokes" "Vic" stamped on rear. See also Reg.
