Domestic object - Food Safe, Willow Ware Pty Ltd, 1920-1950
Willow started business in 1887 as a metal working company based in Melbourne Australia, making tinned biscuit and tea canisters. The outbreak of the First World War saw their manufacturing change to making armaments and essential packaging for the war effort. In the early 1920’s, the Willow brand was established. Making tin plated canisters and baking pans with the well-known Willow pattern, imprinted on them. Some other items in production at this time include billies, boilers, basins and Coolgardie safes. In the late 1950’s, the company ventured into plastics production. Stepping away from its very successful tin plating industry of more than 50 years. In 1965, the company name changed to Willow Ware Pty Ltd, to be more closely linked to its Willow brand. Willow Ware is still in business today. A food safe known as a “Coolgardie” meat storage made by an emerging Australian company no longer in bushiness. This item gives a snapshot into early Australian manufacturing specifically aimed at the Australian market. Projector, Glass Slide Projector, Early 20th century
This magic lantern or slide projector was used to project glass slides on to a screen The magic lantern was the chief visual entertainment for the public before the introduction of the moving picture and consequent cinema entertainment. This one probably dates from about 1915 but its provenance is not known. This magic lantern is an important and interesting object as it shows us the way people in the early 20th century were entertained. The few people who owned this type of projector would give public showings of slides of people and scenes and sometimes raise money for a charitable cause in this way. This is a glass slide projector or magic lantern with a rectangular metal lantern body partly open at the back. The back has a top section that is attached with a metal hinge and lifts up and outwards. The lantern base also has a side opening with a metal knob for opening and a metal panel with a blue glass inset. Inside the lantern body is the lamp and an electric cord (the illuminant system may have originally been fuelled by paraffin or another oil burner). On top of the lantern body is a smaller rectangular metal box in two sections. This can be removed. The illuminant system is brass and slides out. It has two mechanisms for adjusting the focus and a covering over the lens opening which can be pulled up. There is also a wooden slide holder which can be pulled in and out of the projector. ‘W.B. Domestic object - Bovril cup, c. 1950
This cup has been produced as a promotional item by the makers of Bovril, a meat extract paste usually used in cooking or stirred in hot water for a hot drink. Similar products such as Marmite (Britain) and Vegemite (Australia) have a vegetable rather than a meat base. This item is a memento of the times past when hot drinks made from meat or vegetable paste were very popular and it is retained for display purposes. This is a cream-coloured china cup with gold edgings and three gold-coloured Bovril logos (the name 'Bovril' inside a shield outline). radio, C1950's
Old radios recall a time when society was very different. The 1950s were the heyday of radios in Australia. Families often had more than one in the home. When transistor radios arrived instead of listening on the valve mantel, people were able to grab a tiny radio, taking music and news anywhere they wanted. This item reflects the time before portable radio communication. A 240V valve radio in a wooden cabinet. It is a mantel radio with four knobs at the front - two on each side - for volume, tuning, tone/on/off and band. There is a lead with a plug attached and earth at the back. Under each corner is a small wooden foot. "S.T.C. Made in Aust."radio communication entertainment -
