The bookplate design incorporates the motif of Rückenfigur (a figure viewed from behind) that is central to much of my imagery and draws from a decades-long accumulation of personal iconography, including hair ornaments, decorative collars and stylised Arts and Crafts-inspired crimson roses. This book was a prize given by the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School to Richard Petterd in 1888. The Warrnambool Baptist Church was established in 1864 in a small cottage in Kinross Avenue in Warrnambool at the home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Griffiths. In 1869 a church was built in Koroit Street and enlarged in 1974. From time to time more improvements were made and the church still operates from the same site today. A Sunday School was established in 1865. Richard Forrester Petterd, born in 1878 in Warrnambool, was the son of George Petterd and Mary Ann Petterd, nee Warn. He married Susanna McConnell in 1903 and died in 1935. A daughter, Muriel, married Frederick Wooles in 1933 and it was their son, Kenneth from whose estate this book has come to be added to the Society’s collection.This book is most significant as it is a rare memento from the early days of the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School and it belonged to Richard Petterd whose family was involved in businesses in Warrnambool as picture framers, stationery and fancy goods shop proprietors and estate commission agents. The book is a very attractive example of Victorian-era children’s books. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages It has a multi-coloured front cover depicting three children reading a book with a window behind them and floral decorations and two birds surrounding the three girls. The red binding is somewhat torn. The back cover has black and white etchings of flowers and children and advertisements for other books available. Original design by Dorothy Leviny, aged 25, while she was a student at the Bendigo School Of Mines under the tutelage of Arthur T. Woodward. Woodward, who had come to Australia from Britain, was a renowned proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dorothy Leviny, along with two of her sisters, entered a number of items in the First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work, Melbourne, 1907, and was awarded second prize for one of her wallpaper designs. Dorothy Leviny was the ninth child born to noted colonial silversmith and jeweller, Ernest Leviny, and his wife, Bertha (nee Hudson).This original wallpaper design by Dorothy Leviny is one of few that remain in existence from the early twentieth century showing the influence of the British Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia.Original wallpaper design made by (Bertha) Dorothy Leviny painted in watercolour. Robert JENYNS (1944- 16/11/2015) Born Melbourne, Victoria Bob Jenyns' career spanned over four decades. Producing sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings he has participated in many of Australia's most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the 2nd Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Humour and subtle satire is a focus of his work. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l'archeveche. At the age of 16 Jenyns studyied advertising art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. He then studied fine art with artist/teachers including Ken Scarlett, Kenneth Jack and Fred Cress, and night life drawing classes at the National Gallery schools under John Brack. After graduating the 20 year old Jenyns taught sculpture and carving at Aspendale Technical School (Melbourne). Two years later he moved to Daylesford and where he taught art until 1978, having received teaching qualifications from Hawthorn Teachers College in 1972. From 1979 Jenyns was based in Tasmania, initially lecturing in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art and later serving as head of the sculpture department until 2005. Maryanne COUTTS (1960- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Maryanne Coutts studied at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), The University of Melbourne, 1979 -1981, the University of NSW (UNSW),1984 and was awarded a PhD (Painting) from Federation University Australia in 1999. She has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally including the United Kingdom, Spain and Thailand. She has worked as a Sessional Lecturer at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (1999 - 2003), and is currently Head of Drawing at the National Art School, Sydney. In 2007 Maryanne Coutts won the Portia Geach Memorial Award and was the joint winner of the Blake Price in 1982. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.An apple depicted in oil by Maryanne Coutts. Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller was born in Germany on 30 June 1825. Ferdinand was a German-Australian physician, geographer, and a botanist. After passing the pharmaceutical examinations he studied botany at Kiel University. In 1847 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Kiel University.when he was 21 years old for a thesis on the flora of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1847, he moved to Adelaide, Australia and worked as a chemist. From 1848 to 1852 he travelled through the colony, discovering and describing a large number of unknown to Western science plants. He wrote a few papers to German periodicals on botanical subjects. In 1851, Mueller moved to Melbourne, capital of the new colony of Victoria. In 1853, He was appointed Government Botanist for Victoria by Governor Charles La Trobe. In 1873, Ferdinand received an honorary doctorate of the University of Rostock. In 1883, he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales. He published many volumes on the Victorian plants. Many of Australian geographical features were named after him such as: the Mueller Ranges (WA), Muellers Range (Qld), Mount Mueller (in WA, NT, Tas and Vic) and many more. Mueller died in Melbourne on 10 October 1896 and is buried in the St. Kilda Cemetery A green cloth hard cover book. Title and author's name is engraved in gold on spine. These seven photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio c1970s. The two units took turns each year to host the event and on this occasion was held at the RAAF School of Radio, Laverton. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965.
