Skiing was first done at Falls Creek with the building of the towns of Bogong and Mt Beauty. European workers to the Hydro scheme thought that Falls Creek would make a good skiing village. The first ski lodge being opened in 1947. These skiis would have been used in those first seasons of Falls Creek and used by the first skiers of the time from 1945 onwards.These skiis are historically and socially significant, as they would have been one of the first type of skiis used at Falls Creek, one of Victoria first ski resorts, and used by the pioneers of skiing in Victoria. This item has good interpretive capacity as it shows the style of skiis that were used in the 1940's and they are a good comparative item against modern skiis. Initial court cases for the Western district were held and controlled for some time by Rutledge in Port Fairy. The first courthouse was built around 1854 and was in service until the stone building was built next to it in 1870. These two implements were used until around 1970 when heating was installed in the courthouse. They were decommissioned by Mr Ellis Roberts, Public Works Department Inspector.These implements have a strong connection to a public building which has a long association with the town and surrounding area. The courthouse of 1863 was the scene of an infamous murder of Constable O’Boyle in front of the fireplace. Shovel has barley sugar twisted handle with eight sided domed top. It is flared at the bottom to hold the spade which is attached with two metal rivets. Spade contains a number of holes cut into oval shape in centre and has fluted side edges. The tongs consist of two parts held together below a short handle with a metal rivet and two metal discs. Purchased from Orbost Op shop several years ago. Original owner unknown. This bridge over the Snowy River was opened on July 4 1922. It was constructed in 1922 alongside the previous suspension bridge. Its building was a combined effort of the Victorian Railways and the Country Roads Board at a cost of 35,000 pounds. Ballarat Junior Technical School was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines, Opening in the ground of the Dana Street Primary School in 1913, it moved into a custom built double storey building on the Ballarat School of Mines Grounds in 1921. Booklet contains songs and chants written by students. Specimen Cottage in Hargreaves Street Bendigo was built by stonemason James Brierley in 1856. He purchased the land at the first land sales in 1854. It is possibly the earliest building still standing in Bendigo. This photograph can be dated to 1878-79 because according to Chartered Scoundrel's by Pat Grainger, Scott's Hotel only operated during those years. The National Bank of Australasia at the right of the photograph was designed by Leonard TERRY of Terry and Oakden, Architects and was constructed in 1874. It was subsequently extended to a design by architect George JOBBINS in 1889. Dagging shears belonged to donor's father Maurice Dalton who was foreman of the show floor of the Dennys Lascekkes building until his retirement after 34 years with the company. Maurice used the shears in his work as a wool classer in rural Victoria and New South Wales. The shears are SUCCESS 11" Ball Bros. & Co. Dagging Shear, made in Sheffield, England.A pair of metal blade shears. The blade is engraved with 'SUCCESS / BALL BROS & CO / SHEFFIELD ENGLAND'. One of a batch of yarn sample cards. Alexander Lau established his business in 1950 in the Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He designed textiles and commissionned many of his textiles to be spun andf woven in Geelong mills. He had a long association with the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Mill and with Mr Schofield, the manager.
