Colin COLAHAN (1897-1987) Born Australia Colin Colahan was a student of Max Meldrum, and was one of the first tonalist painters to have his work purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria. He contributed cartoons to 'The Bulletin'. Colahan was working in Paris in the 1920s and had a studio in Mont Martre. He returned to Melbourne by 1927. He next lived and worked in London in 1936 for the next 22 years. During World War Two his house in Chelsea was bombed and everything destroyed. Some photographs donated to Xavier College, his alma mater, are the only evidence of the destroyed work. Cola ham was an Australian War Artist after 1942, with over 90 of his works held by the Australian War Memorial. He moved permanently to Itsly in 1958. Murray GRIFFIN (11/11/1903– 29/01/1992) Born Malvern, Victoria Vaughan Murray (Murray) Griffin trained at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1919 to 1923. He taught art at Scotch College (1936 to 1937), drawing and teaching at RMIT (1937 to 1940) and teacher of drawing at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School 1946 to 1953. In 1941 he was appointed an official war artist working with the 8th Australian Division in Malaya for three months. The completed works were prepared for transport to Australia but did not arrive and are lost. He was captured by the Japanese in February 1942 after the fall of Singapore and incarcerated for three and a half years as a Prisonor of war at Changi Prison, Singapore. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Robert HANNAFORD (9 November 1944- ) Born Gilbert Valley, Riverton, South Australia From In 1967 to 1968 Robert Hannaford studied in Ballarat. Primarily known as a portrait artist he is also known for his landscapes, still lifes, nudes, and sculptures. Robert Hannaford has commented: "Portraiture is an exploration of character that goes beyond photography. It is an ongoing thing over a long period of time. You get elements of various emotions that can be sensed in the painting." Framed academic portrait of Dr Tom Kennedy who was the Director of the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (GIAE) from 1984 to 1989, and the inaugural Chief Executive Officer and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University College Gippsland (MUCG) from 1990 to 1992. (In 2014 the Churchill Campus became part of Federation University Australia). Prior to moving to Gippsland, Professor Kennedy was the Deputy Director of the Chisholm Institute of Technology. He was an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry, Professor Kennedy held a degree in Science, a PhD in Chemistry (Glasgow) and a Diploma of Education.
