Prior to 1901, sailing pilot cruising cutters were "Boomerang", "Corsair", "Anonyma", "Proserpine", "Rip", "Mavis" and "Hawk". In 1901 the pilots took delivery of their first steam powered pilot cutter, "Victoria", 46 metres in length, built at Williamstown. "Victoria" was followed by "Alvina", "Akuna", "Akuna II" and in 1953, "Wyuna", a twin-screw diesel electric pilot cutter 63 metres long. "Wyuna" served until November 1979 and was then sold to the new Nautical College at Launceston for use as a training ship. The system for getting pilots on and off ships at sea was for the ship to stop dead in the water with the wind and sea broad on the beam. Ansonia Clocks were made by a clock manufacturing business which started in Ansonia, Connecticut, in 1851 and which moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1878. Tram tracks can be clearly seen in this image. Horse trams were introduced late in 1887, the line up Sturt St to the Lake and Gardens being built first. Note these tracks do not have any electricity above them - electric trams did not appear until 1905. St Andrews Kirk steeple was erected in 1884.Previously unknown image of Ballarat. The date of this map or plan is uncertain but it appears to be from the early to mid 1870s. One of the landholders identified on the plan, James Allan of Coimadai died suddenly on the 9th July, 1874 (see Bacchus Marsh Express, 11 July, 1874, page. 3). The first permanent Catholic Church was a slab construction covered in Canvas. It measured 40 x 16feet. A new church designed by George and Schneider was begun in 1856 and completed in 1857. However this structure was demolished in 1887 due to faulty foundations. The current church, the largest weatherboard church in Australia, was designed by Wilhelm Vahland and was blessed 1st July 1888.Serving for 150 years: St Killian's Catholic Church will celebrate 150 years of service next weekend. George Burnett Barton (1836-1901), lawyer, journalist and historian, was born on 9 December 1836 in Sydney. He practised journalism rather than law for which he had qualified in 1860.
