Certificate, Hawthorn Tramways Trust (HTT), "Hawthorn Tramways Trust - Certificate of Competency as Motorman", 1919
Bound book of 100 Certifications - "Hawthorn Tramways Trust - Certificate of Competency as Motorman". Consists of 100 pages of certificates, numbered 1 to 100, with butt of each certificate retained in the book. Bound with heavy card covers, red coloured on the outside of the covers, stapled with black binding material. Each Certificate numbered, in top left hand corner, giving date, employee name, date of birth and signed or initialled by the Engineer and Manager. In the top left hand corner of the book is printers logos - The Prahran Telegraph Printing Co, King St, opposite Town Hall, telephone 108W. Most certificates issue 29.12.1919. Certificates 1 to 58 issued by HTT 59 and 60 issue with HTT crossed out and MMTB written in. 61 to 75 and 92 to 99 removed from book and No. 100 removed altogether. No. 74 is loose. Book - green Rexene covers, with title - "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board - Works Codes and Instructions". Six sections, sewn into covers, dated April 1961, signed by J. J. Fisher, Civil Engineer. 118 pages plus covers. Book numbered "46". Provides an list of contents, giving provisional codes or instructions for works, instructions, about the maintenance and repair of the track welding, safe working, watchmen, care of lamps, and plant. 2nd copy added 5/5/2019 from donation of Barry Brooks ex Bob Prentice Collection. Images revised - jpgs removed and pdf added.Inside front cover has a signature and date of 9/8/61 in ink and inside rear cover "not entered" in pencil. May Coles (1915 - 2007) worked for more than 25 years at the exclusive Georges store in Collins St. May lived nearby the West Preston tram terminus and caught the tram to work. The work was commissioned by May to recall those special years of her work at Georges. Has a close association with May Coles who commissioned Norman Kirkpatrick to paint the work.Framed Painting of Norman Kilpatrick 1982, of W 785 west bound in Collins St with Georges Department Store in the background. Wooden frame, painted light and dark brown with light cream cloth inner from and cream lined. Stretched canvas over wooden inner frame stapled to main frame and covered with a Masonite lining on the inside. Framed, glazed, black and white photograph of the intersection of Flinders and Swanston St Melbourne, looking towards Flinders St railway station. Timber frame, painted brown and gold, with brown paper lining on rear. Has brown string stapled at rear on both sides for hanging. In the central bottom of the rear is "Glen Waverley Picture Framing, sticker, 698 High St Road, Glen Waverley with a 7 digit phone number. Photo c1926?? features a very busy intersection cable trams (No. 17 west bound in Flinders, tram 160 north bound in Swanston, two W class trams, other cable trams, many motor cars, horse drawn vehicles, cyclist and pedestrians. Note the standing zone in Flinders St. In photo are Young and Jacksons Hotel, Bacchus Marsh Concentrated Milk table cream, and numerous signs on the railway station. Black and white photograph of W5 No. 779 inbound to the City and Domain Road on route 56, on the open ballasted track just before passing under the railway line at the Zoo gardens area. Shows the open doors with the bars down. Photo of the tram slightly out of focus. Taken early 1950's by an unknown photographer. In the overhead shows a sign black cross in a circular disc and behind the tram a incandescent light suspended in the middle of the overhead. The photo shows the construction of the track at this location, dog spiked sleepers, the rail supports for the inner check rail. Used by the AETA at conventions, displays etc. Possibly made 1980's by style of letters and paint. Has four 50x18 wooden legs, with hinges at the top to support sign and allow it to be opened. Fitted with rope and eyehooks to allow it to be carried our secured in the open position. These are damaged and not functional. Trams tramways AETA Signs Auxiliary Board Sign, painted onto ...Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". The signs were received wrapped in part of the "The Age, Thursday March 23 1961" - sample retained - see image 4. A series of three Black and white photographs of tram T class 182 at the Williamstown Road terminus of the Footscray tram system, c1960. Tram photograph in Somerville Road. All showing the return destination of Russell St. .1 - Shows the shops in the background. Trolley pole reversed and appears the driver is about to enter the cab of the tram. Has the run number F6. Has a Caltex, Ampol, Kix and Caravan park sign in the background. .2 - 182 at the terminus with trolley pole reversed and under the wheel locating guard. Has Run No. F5 in the rear cabin window. .3 - ditto, but before trolley pole reversed with passengers leaving the car and one lady waiting to board. Printed on Fujichrome paper. Not known who took the photograph or when it was printed.
