Negative of cable trams shunting at the Northcote terminus High Street, possibly 22/3/1940, by Wal Jack. Shows the grip car on the terminal track returning for the trailer - No. 532 to be rolled down. Trailer has all the louvre sashes in the raised position, with destinations of Spencer St, Northcote and a central sign of Smith St. In the background is a bank building and A. F. Turner Chemist. Postcard of cable tram dummy stationary outside the double storey "Myers" warehouse and office building in Lonsdale St, between Elizabeth and Swanston Sts. Three boys in shorts sit or stand on the dummy. The dummy's destination reads "Brighton Rd", which dates the photograph as between February 1924 and December 1925, (not c1929 as written) between the construction of the track in this section of Lonsdale St and the electric conversion of the Brighton Rd line. Photograph - Acland St Car Shed for auction, c1926
Photograph is of a newspaper cutting of photograph and caption. It shows a W or W2 class tram in Acland St, St Kilda passing the single level brick frontage of the disused cable car shed. The closed main entry doors carry a large sign about its future sale. Apart from the closure of a short section of track in northern Swanston St in 1924, the St Kilda Beach to Windsor and to the city line was the first full cable line to be closed in 1925. It reopened as an electric line in December 1925.Yields information about the closure of the St Kilda Esplanade cable line.
