Ken McInness, convenor of the Friends of Mullum Mullum Valley was angered by this happening, but the Council's manager of Engineering Services, John Trevorah, said the tree had been earmarked for removal at the start of the project.The President of the Ringwood Bowling Club, Maurice Boyd, said it was "an extremely dirty gum tree and that he'd asked the council to remove it. Councillors Sylvia Phillips and Neil MacDonald have lobbied strongly against having the surplus from council's 1991/92 budget transferred into the trust. They claimed that by doing so, council was using general revenue to finance legal fees for the Eastland deal, which the public was told would be financed from payments from Coles Myer

Article written by Janine JonesRingwood Council will review its hardship provisions for waivering unpaid rates. Mayor Greg Adkins said he was concerned that no ratepayers had their $100 state defecit tax levy waivered due to hardship as part of the latest round of rate changes. This was surprising when there was much hardship in the community. Cr Margaret Cheevers said the loosening of hardship provisions should be widened to apply to those who had difficulty paying their rates. The grant, made through the Home and Community Care Program, will enable Ringwood to establish its own Meals on Wheels kitchen later this year. Ringwood had bought meals from Nunawading for many years, but Nunawading kitchen facilities were no longer able to cope with the demand.

"Bash witness appeaL"'.Police are appealing for help from anyone who may have seen the baffling attack on a 16 year old Croydon girl near Mullum Mullum Creek. Kate Stammers was assaulted with a baseball bat. She was knocked to the ground and hit repeatedly around the head before being thrown in the creek. She was taken to Maroondah Hospital with a 30 cm gash on the back of her head, before being transferred to the Austin Hospital for treatment for a fractured skull; and bruising to the face and the upper body.

"Bash attack on businessman"'.A local restaurateur and council candidate received abrasions and bruises after a vicious attack by two men at his pizza restaurant on Sunday morning. Joe Cassari, who is standing in Ringwood's North Ward was assaulted and the front window of his shop smashed after he asked two men to leave. Mr Cossari's nephew called the police immediately the fight started, but they had to call again 20 minutes later when they still hadn't arrived. The police said they had another job to go to.

Apart from the increase in reported assaults, overall crime reports in May were down by 83 on the same time last year. Ringwood CIB Senior Sergeant Jenny O'Toole said publicity, co-operation from the public and increased patrols by uniform and bicycle police were heloping to reduce the number of burglaries.

Sue SalibaFormer Australian junior tennis champion, Sue Saliba, has moved from the international tennis circuit to coaching juniors at the Parkwood Tennis Club in Wonga Road.Following her junior title in 1974, Sue, now 38, joined the professional ranks and moved to the international circuit in 1996. At her peak, Sue was ranked No. 1 in Victoria and No. 3 in Australia.

George ArundelBagpipe player George Arundel thinks there is something special about a man with a beard dressing up in a skirt and playing the pipes. "It's the theatrics of it all that I love", Mr Arundel, a member of the Ringwood Highland Pip[e Band, said. Mr Arundel began playing the bagpipesas a boy growing up in Glasgow in 1966, and has been playing them ever since.

Paul Voutier, a Boys Brigade member from Ringwood, has earned his Queen's badge. Meanwhile, Warranwood teenager AndrewTiley will be presented with the Queen's Scout badge for his experience and leadership with the North Ringwood Venturers.

They are Colonel David Jamison of North Ringwood, who has been appointed a member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division (AM), and Gordon Parker of Ringwood, who will receive the Order of Australia in the General Division. Mr Parker has been an active member of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces Japan Association of Australia for more than 20 years. Col. Jamison has served 34 years in the Australian Army Ordnance Corps including six years as head of Capital Procurement in Melbourne. Both men are very proud to receive their awards.
