Painting - Ballarat Technical Art School Folio, Ivy Wilson, Artwork by Ivy Wilson, c1920-1922, 1920 - 22 (originals)
Ivy WILSON (1907-1998) Ballarat | Australia Ivy Wilson lived at 17 Mair Street with her parents while she studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School. Her student folio contains several stencils hand-cut from paper and card. Among them are stylised graphics of correa, waratah, gum, and kangaroo apple as well as kookaburras, cockatoos and a koala. One example of a wreath was subsequently translated into embroidered needlework. Wilson’s folio possibly consists of mostly junior technical work, as she appears to only have sat a single senior Education Department examination, Drawing Plant Forms from Nature. Alternatively, given her focus on textile-based arts, she may have been an evening trade student. A number of digitised images taken from a folder of works by Ivy Wilson undertaken at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School between 1920 and 1922. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. Leisure object - Boudoir Doll, c. early 1900s
The donor was given this doll about 50 years ago by her grandfather (in the late 1960s). He used to be a handyman at a high rise building in St Kilda, Melbourne. He had been doing some work for one of the old ladies and she gave him the doll to give to his granddaughter, who collected dolls. The doll has spent a few years at the Nagambie museum until it closed down and returned to the donor The origins or age of the doll are unknown. Originally it was thought to be a Fashion Doll dating from around the 1880s but the painted face together with the bisque legs and gold painted shoes are similar to those found on Boudoir Dolls (also known as Bed Dolls, Sofa Dolls, Flapper Dolls and French Dolls) of the early 20th century. Fashion dolls were sent from fashion houses to advertise the latest styles, fabrics, trims, hairstyles and accessories. Dressmakers would show these dolls to their customers. Ladies would then place their order and the dressmakers would make the dress to their size. The dressmakers would learn the construction techniques from examining the dolls. Boudoir Dolls dolls usually had no maker's marks and were primarily used as bedroom decorations for ladies rather than as children's toys. This doll appears to date at about the early part of the 20th century, but the petticoats are much older - possibly from a child's christening gown. At the time that the donor received the doll, it had a coloured lace over-gown that was badly torn so her mother removed it to replace with more lace but this never eventuated. The pink silk dress also appears to have been remodelled into a 19th century style with gathered sleeves and a gathered skirt. This fashion or boudoir doll is significant for being a rare example of a doll made in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. The doll is wearing clothing representing the fashion for young girls in that era. The doll is also significant as an item possibly used by fashion houses and dressmakers to advertise the latest fashions in clothing, trims, accessories and hairstyles. A doll such as this may have been found in a Victorian dressmaker's premises for use as a pattern and technique template and for a display to customers. It may also have been used as a decorative item in a lady's bedroom.Female boudoir doll with silk face and body, and porcelain lower arms and legs. She has plaited blonde silk hair. Her painted face has brown eyes and her shoes are painted gold. The doll is dressed in a long pink puffed-sleeve dress with a gathered waist and a ruffle at the hem. A pink ribbon around her waist is tied at the back. There are small silver balls hand-stitched around the neckline. Fine white cotton round neckline edged with lace. Three lace panels on centre bodice. Long ties are stitched down at the centre of the gown, with an embroidered cotton lace overlay, defining the bodice and skirt. Narrow pleats between the three lace panels, give fullness to the front bodice. Long sleeves are edged with narrow lace, and slight gathering gives the impression of a cuff. Wide neckline, rounded at the back, and a deep V shaped front. Short sleeves, edged with a one cm band of scalloped edge lace. This edging also trims the back neckline. Front neckline is trimmed with six cm deep scalloped edge, broiderie anglaise, featuring an embroidered floral design, and cutwork. A casing at the waistline, one cm wide, appears to contain elastic, which is now perished. Clothing - WHITE COTTON LACE TRIMMED DRAWERS, 1890's- 1910
Two 2cm cotton fabric covered buttons close the waistband of the drawers, at the centre front. A 33cm wide gathered panel at the centre front, fastens to the waistband with two 1.5cm plastic buttons-(possibly replacement for original buttons). This gathered panel may suggest that these drawers were worn during a pregnancy. The 75cm long legs are trimmed with two bands of floral embroidered, and cutwork lace-eight cm deep lace. waistband is 6.5cm deep. Folding pusher pram
The pram is light in weight. Made of black vinyl with a metal frame. A handle with wooden grips is used to push the pram from behind. It has four spoked wheels with rubber tyres. The hood can be unlocked and folded down as can the handle which folds over the top of the pram body for ease of transport. The pram contains a soft kapok fitted mattress with white heirloom lace frilled cover and a soft pillow covered with a white cotton pillowcase with a chicken and flowers embroidered on it.None -

This hat was worn by D. P. Bright, whilst serving in the Royal Australian Navy, presumably on the H.M.A.S. Leeuwin.Sailor's hat with removable ribbon which sits on exterior band with machine embroidered inscriptions, tied in a bow at the back. Hat is piqued, stiffened white cotton with two white eyelets on both left and right side. Dark navy band on exterior with brown leather lining on the interior, with cotton bow on interior back. On interior of hat, the hat contains a plastic lining on which there is an inscription. Uniform - Battle Dress jacket, trousers, lanyard and neck tie, 2nd Half 20th Century
This battle dress uniform dates to the latter half of the 20th century. It was issued to the “Prince of Wales’s Light Horse’ Regiment however the date of issue for all items is unknown. A Prince of Wales Light Horse unit was based in Kyneton, a neighboring town to Woodend. This uniform likely originated from the Kyneton area. The jacket and trouser style was still in use during the Vietnam war in which the Regiment participated. Considering the condition of the item, it is highly likely that the uniform has not seen active service.This battle dress uniform is representative of a type of standard issue Army uniform, dating to the later half of the 20th century. It is also in very good condition.Khaki, wool jacket with yellow lanyard over the right shoulder. Prince of Wale's light horse embroidered on a yellow flash, stitched on both shoulders. Cropped style with two pockets on front, four khaki buttons and waist belt. Two epaulets and a manufacturer's label on inside left hand side. Clothing - HELEN MUSK COLLECTION: PINK SILK BODICE
Long sleeved pink silk bodice lined with pink and mauve cotton fabric. Front of bodice made of pieces with a centre seam. Centre panel insert of cream coloured embroidered net narrowing from 28 cms across high neckline to 18 cms at waist. Five black velvet bows are attached vertically at centre front from below the throat, 6 cms apart. Velvet bows hand stitched to centre front. Front panel has rounded shape dipping below the waist. On either side of front insert are two wide vertical tucks Stand up collar of embroidered net (6 cms) has two pieces of wire inserted at LHS of back opening and in front of LH shoulder. Matching wire pieces on RHS are missing. Wire pieces are hand stitched in place. The bodice has a back opening fastened with six buttons and button holes plus a hook and eye at the top below the collar. One button is missing. Buttons are white with wheel spoke pattern. Strip of hemmed silk fabric is tied to the top buttonhole. Cotton lining consists of four pieces across the back and two pieces across the front with centre seam and two darts on either side. Full gathered set in sleeves from the shoulder are gathered into a tightly fitted 20 cm lower sleeve just below the elbow. The upper sleeve has a fitted lining of mauve cotton fabric shaped to the elbow and then forming the fitted sleeve along the lower arm. The fitted lower sleeves are covered with cream coloured embroidered net and have a 10 cm opening on outer edge fastened with three buttons and button holes. Clothing - CREAM EMBROIDERED SILK AND LACE GIRLS DRESS, Late 1800's
Beautiful soft cream silk dress, with a random silk embroidered three petal flower over the fabric. Round neckline with overlaid square yoke of embroidered lace on a net background. Two 7cm wide bands of the lace are gathered over the shoulder armhole edge. These frills, and the scalloped edges of the front and back lace yoke are trimmed with 4 cm long decorative silk tassels.(one missing). Long sleeves, tapered in at the wrist are trimmed at the wrist with a 4.5cm wide band of lace, part of which is threadedwith two rows ofsoft pink silk ribbon insertion. Soft pink silk, folded into three 2.5cm tucks-overall width 6cm trim the high waistline, with a 7cm diameter rosette at the left front, and a bow(?), and tails, trimming the back waistline. This is severely damaged. Four metal hook and loops fasten the back lace collar, and nine metal hooks and eyes fasten the bodice. Bodice and sleeves are fully lined. Bodice is boned with thirteen 12-4 cm long ''bones''. Skirt is in two tiers; Top is 38cm deep, and made from the plain embroidered silk. A 5cm deep band of lace, with scalloped edges then joins the 36 cm deep ;lower panel of beautifully embroidery and pulled threadwork. Hem is faced, and finished or hemmed with french knots. Dress , which is hand stitched is fully lined with cotton. The lower 36 cm deep tier of the underskirt is trimmed with three .5cm tucks, and two 8cm bands of cutwork lace in a floral and geometric pattern. An oval shaped pocket is sewn into the front of the ''petticoat'' lining. From Rosemary Cameron - This quilt has been made in 100% wool to celebrate the diversity, durability and beauty of pure wool, especially the lightweight cool wools. The woollen patches were kindly donated by Mr. David Jones, managing Director of Fletcher Jones and Staff which were pre-cut samples of European Fabrics in various weights, textures and colours. I had the task of creating a design around the fabrics available, some of which I only had to sample. I chose to surround my design with dark shades to encompass at the top of the quilt, the lightness of the sky and the trees, in the middle the warmth of summer, the dryness of central Australia and at the bottom the rick tones of Opals, our mineral wealth and the internal heart of earth. To add excitement and texture to this design I chose 31 Australian Wildflowers including all the Australian Floral Emblems, some unusual wildflowers and favourite small wildflowers. Twice life size, these flowers have been made of silk wool and cotton, embroidered, painted and beaded by our creative and talented Hamilton Quilters, their results are fantastic! The brilliance and timeless quality of these Australian Wildflowers intensify and complement the colours of the Wool Quilt. The Quilt was hand pieced and hand quilted at quilting bees. It has a woollen batting, binding and backing which was a delight to work with and very easy to quilt. The flowers were assembled and attached in small working bees. To the fifty-two Hamilton Quilters who have worked on this quilt for six months thank you for you hard work and creativity especially Joan H. Lyons for her time, enthusiasm and knowledge when difficulties arose. Joan M. Lyons has worked with me on various stages of this Quilt, her help and support has been tremendous. Geoffrey Blainey was the inaugural Chancellor of the University of Ballarat. It is assumed this is the first graduation in 1995 at the Chancellor does not wear the University of Ballarat Chancellor's Academic regalia. Another possibility is when Geoffrey Blainey was awarded an honorary doctorate. Academic gowns distinguish between the University's senior office holders and our graduates. Federation University's Chancellor wears a blue robe that is trimmed with gold and features a gold embroidered frog at the shoulder and gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. The Deputy Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor also wear blue robes, with gold trims and different designs inclorporating the gold oak-leaf braid, ord or tassels. The members of the university Council wear black robes with a sole of gold. Our graduates wear black robes, with either a black trancher cap or bonnet (for professional octorate) with stoles, linings or trims in the colour of their discipline. In the Words of donor, Betty Stone , … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. A few examples of these items have survived the years.” Baby's Crocheted Bonnet - This finely crocheted bonnet was made by Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees and is at least one hundred years old. Due to the condition of the original ribbon ties, they have been replaced with new ribbon. It is made out of two square pieces of cardboard laid one on top of the other, then bound together along one edge to form a hinge. Sometimes, an extra purificator may be placed inside the pall. The other item is a Chalice Veil which is placed over the chalice, paten, and purificator when the vessels are prepared for the Eucharist and placed on the altar; it is removed before the Consecration. Clothing - MERLE HOULDEN COLLECTION: BABY'S WHITE COTTON NIGHTGOWN, 1885
Fine white cotton, round neck with three embroidered cotton panels inserted in bodice. Gown front is one piece of fabric from shoulder to hem, with a panel sewn across the front (12cm X 3 cm) giving the appearance of a bodice and skirt. This panel extends into long ties which tie at the back. Long sleeves are edged with lace and braid. This braid also edges the bodice panels, and fine lace edges the neckline. Narrow pleats between the lace bodice panels, give fullness to the bodice.Written in ink on inside of bodice panel - A. Geuer. Travelling Communion Set, c1940s
The Rev A W Pederick was a chaplain who served in the New Guinea Campaign during WWII. His service included the Kokoda Trail. Brown leather carry case with a brown metal base, a carry handle and two lockable latches on the font. The box has a blue velvet lining. The box holds a paten, diameter 12.0 cm, and a wafer tin which are held in pouches in the lid. Two bottles with cork and silver lids are in fitted compartments inside the box which also contains a small white embroidered cloth. There is embossed gold lettering on the front of the box. The box also holds a letter from the Rev Douglas W Risstrom."CHAPLAIN A. W. It was worked in cross stitch by Valerie Birkett and Valda Arrowsmith. Their initials are above the Australian flag. The alphabet in capital and lower case is along the top with numbers 1-10 below them. Underneath are many 20th century inventions including television, sewing machine, radio etc. The Australian flag is at the centre on the lower edge. Northern District School of Nursing trainee nurse's base uniform from 1972Nurse's one piece dress in yellow with yoke and central front chest panel in white. Dress fastens with full back zip to waist and metal hook and eye. There are two pockets at sides below waist. There is a gusset to each side of back to sleeve. There is a long sleeved, waist length jacket, satin lined, with round neck with five yellow buttons and button holes at front. The fabric is of stretch cotton. Dress has a white label with 'Florgale Uniforms, Permanent Press' and washing instructions printed in red and blue and stitched to left rear neck facing. A trade mark, a ball in red and blue with the word 'Koratron' is also on this label. The jacket has a white label stitched to the lining at base of neck with 'Florgale Uniforms, Melbourne, Sydney" in gold.
