Two documents that show that in 2003 Melbourne Legacy decided to sell two of its properties, 22 Selwood St, Hawthorn East and 9 The Avenue, Windsor. This decision was taken due to rising maintenance costs and that the money raised from the sale of the properties could be used to benefit all 24,000 widows under their care. One document was a statement by President Tony Parkes about the decision and the other a letter from Jellis Craig offering to be involved in the sale. They had read about the decision in the Leader newspaper. No time frame had been set and all residents of these two properties would be consulted by Legacy personnel with a family member present. "Margaret Robbie was another of the local painters who came late to art or combined it with a quite different occupation. Her grandparents, John Shaw and Margaret (Byers), went to Hobart in 1855 but then crossed the Strait and settled in Kyenton where they remained until 1918. Margaret was the issue of the marriage of Mary Shaw and Robbie. She spent a considerable time overseas for the YWCA, including a period as its General Secretary in Toronto, Canada, and worked in the Middle East during World War 2. Prue Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.The mansion Woodlands in Harp Road, East Kew suffered the death of a thousand cuts. In its case, the cuts were subdivisions. Previous subdivisions of the mansion and its grounds were given titles such as ‘The Eastlawn Estate’ (MAP.0055), whereas at the end, the subdivision called it as it was, naming itself the ‘final section of the Woodlands Estate’ when it was put up for auction in 1932. The emphasis in the promotion of the subdivision was that it provided purchasers with splendid opportunities ‘to build modern homes in select, well established modern surroundings’. As with other subdivisions in the interwar period, transport links were emphasised. The six residential lots cut Woodlands off from Harp Road. When the vendor, Louisa Rachel Preston Hill, was to die at Woodlands in 1937 aged 86 her address was given as Normanby Road.subdivision plans - kew, woodlands estate

No details as who made the report, though attached to the front cover by a paper clip is a Metropolitan Transit Authority with compliments sheet, stamped "Information Officer", office address of 616 Little Collins St. Gives details of proposals considered, population and land use, existing services, patronage, operating costs, revenue and provides an assessment. Looks at costs for an extension only to Blackburn Road, Springvale Road and to Vermont South. Report showed the cost benefit ratio for Blackburn Road was 1, and less for the other possibilities. Rev. Archibald E. Newton (1893 - 1959) entered Home Mission work at Waratah. He commenced his ministry in 1927 at Mt. Lyell and Strahan in Tasmania, and subsequently served at Wynard (1930), Wycheproof (1933), Traralgon (1937), Pascoe Vale & Merlynston (1943). He was appointed chaplain to metropolitan gaols in 1941, and from 1946 he was chaplain to gaols and hospitals, including mental hospitals. He parish was known as the "Pitiful Parish". Joan Richard was a speaker at the Surrey Hills Historical Society meeting in November 2013. A watercolourist, she has been a long standing member of MSWPS, Past and Recent President in 2017 and a Life Member. The Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors was founded in 1902 by women who had been students at the Art School of the National Gallery of Victoria, to provide a forum for artistic discussion and an opportunity to view and comment on each other's work. Originally named the Students' Art Club, it became "Woomballana" (meaning either 'everlasting beauty' or 'search for beauty') Art Club, The Women's Art Club, the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and finally, in 1954, the present title was adopted. The history of the MSWPS and its members’ achievements, issues of the workplace, family and art commitments, the economic survival of artists, migrant artists and prejudice against women are also explored. Much of the information in “More Than Just Gumtrees” has not been available in previous publications; it includes hitherto unpublished sources - oral history interviews, minute books, reviews, letters, early photographs. There are includes biographies of over 300 artists, with individual exhibition lists, representation in public collections etc REF: MSWPS website. Artist Mabel Pye, who lived in Surrey Hills, is one of the featured artists.A history of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and of the women who have belonged since 1902.
