Yields information about the appearance and use of the Ballarat Railway Station level crossing by trams prior to closure.Set of six black and white photographs of trams at the railway level crossing, Ballarat, Lydiard St North featuring the railway station, gates and signals, Reeds Coffee Palace and the Provincial Hotel. .1 - 28 heading south, with an R class and a K class locomotive in the view. .2 - 11, heading north - taken during the 1950's. .3 - 17 parked right up to the gates while K184 shunts at the station. .4 - single trucker (number obscured) - most likely 17 giving the passengers in the previous photo. .5 - Photo with two single truckers in the view and the gates being closed after the tram has passed. .6 - 11, at the gates with a bogie tram behind. No. 11 has a Briquettes roof advert and a Twin Lakes sign. B&W photograph mounted onto heavy cardboard (black front, green back) of a horse tram (No. 16 - from Reg Item 2726) travelling westbound on Sturt St. on the north side, with Town Hall in background. Many horse drawn cabs are waiting along side the centre median strip on the north side, and the back of one cab on the Lydiard St. kerb. A number of women on the top deck. "Typed caption on photo" "Tram going up North Side of Sturt Street 1897, Note Cab Stand." Photo is believed to be from a copy negative of an original held in the collection of the Ballarat Historical Society. Also has drawing pit marks in corners on photograph. On rear of photo has two Velcro dots and remains on tape from brown mounting tape use. For original print of photograph, see Reg. Functional Object - Point Bar, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), 1960's
Length of 5/8ths of inch or approx. 15.5mm diameter steel bar, which has been heated and formed at one end to give an eye approx. 32mm internal diameter and hammered and ground to form a point edge at the opposite end forming a point bar. Used by Ballarat Tram crews to change tram track points. Standard equipment to all tramcars (two each). This particular point bar was reportedly located at the Lydiard St. and Sturt St. intersection for use by inspectors and other tram crew to change the points at this intersection without obtaining a point bar from the tramcar itself. Taken by a Brisbane Tramway Museum Society member at the time of closure. The point bar was repainted by the BTMS in the green colour scheme prior to presentation to the BTPS/BTM during the 1992 COTMA Perth Conference to Carolyn Dean. Set of 12 A3 proofs, colour, for comment in a large envelope with notes on the outside written by Dave Macartney of the almost final versions of the 12 panels that were installed in Shelters through a Public Records Office of Victoria grant during March 2020. Designed by Peter Lambert Design. 1 - Depots backed by Victoria St 2 - Tram Types - backed by the Mt Pleasant Line 3 - Beginnings backed by the Lydiard St Line 4. - Conductors backed by the Sebastopol line 5 - Carlton St backed by Trams in the City 6 - The Gardens backed by The Gardens lines. The final version for the two at St Aidans drive were changed following Council consultation into a different sized panel but with the same content. Image files are those from Peter Lambert that went to the panel makers. Yields information about some of the individual street tramways shelters at tram stops and their appearance.Set of four Colour 27 x 27 mm slide in a Kodachrome cardboard mount. .1 - Grenville St with two ladies sitting inside, has the Big W store in the background. .2 - Concrete shelter with curved roof - Wendouree Parade near - has the photographer's purse and umbrella on the seat. This shelter was located at Forest St. From discussions with Dave Macartney and Alastair Reither 11/9/2016, it was there in the 1990 hail storms as they sheltered under it, but disappeared soon after - the construction of the roundabout would have absorbed its location. .3 - timber based shelter with flat roof - Wendouree Parade near Dowling St. This shelter remains in position in 9/2016. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Saturday 18/9/1971 about the details of the last trams to run in Ballarat, and that only tramway employees will be allowed to ride back to the depot from Sturt St. Notes that the Mayors of Ballarat and Sebastopol will drive the trams for part of their runs in the municipalities. Quotes tramway superintendent Mr. L. J. Denmead. Gives times the last trams were time to leave the Lydiard St North terminals, that 40 is to be the last tram, that it was to be driven by Mr. L. Walker with Mr. H. Knight as conductor. Ballarat Mayor, Cr. Chisholm was to receive the last tram at the depot. At base of item, notes that The Courier is to provide a 12 page supplement on the history of the Ballarat trams and photos. "Orders for this supplement have been particularly heavy". Has a good association with the final days of the SEC Ballarat system with the operation of the trams for schools (Ballarat North Technical College) and the things that could happen while on tour - 40 derails again.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, dated Thursday 19/8/1971, titled "All aboard". Features two photos of No. 40 and one of another bogie tram during a farewell tour of the Ballarat system the previous day by Ballarat North Technical school students. The lower photo features the school students while the upper photo shows No. 40 derailed near the corner of Sturt and Lydiard Streets with the Town Hall in the background. See Reg items 3765, 3766 for actual prints of the Courier photographs and Reg. item 1073 for another copy of the newspaper clipping. Postcard, Sturt St, Ballarat"
Printed colour postcard of a horse tram travelling on the north side of Sturt St towards Lydiard St. Tram is travelling on the "right side of the road", which is unusual, horse trams normally travelled in bound on the south side or the "wrong side". Close examination shows three (3) horses on the tram, the middle appearing to be fairly small. In the back ground are the buildings on the south side of Sturt St include Harry Davies & Co. store, Stansfield & Smith Paper Warehouse. On rear is places for correspondences stamp, address. Handwritten on rear is "This will give you a fair idea of the beautiful Sturt St Ballarat. It is the prettiest I have seen. Yours " Dated 19/10/1905. Addressed to Mrs. H Digby, Callan Park Sydney NSW. Has a red Victorian 1d stamp, cancelled Melbourne 19/10/1905. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways management system of Conductors rosters interfacing with Drivers during the last full period of operation of the tramway from March 1970. Shows the services and how the various run or crew tables were arranged in relation to the overall timetable.Handwritten sheet on graph paper for Weekdays and Saturdays Rosters for the arrangement on Mt Pleasant - Gardens, Victoria St - Gardens and Lydiard St Nth - Sebastopol routes. Gives the various run numbers, sign on location, trip take times, notes on what to do with trams, sign off times, interface with other runs. Shows the full service where conductors were used and how the various run or crew tables were arranged. See Reg item 3429 for Drivers table. Demonstrates production of souvenirs of the era - folded postcards. The photos could also be used for individual postcards.Set of 9 black and white views of Ballarat printed on a folded strip, glued within a blue colour light weight cardboard folder, titled "Ballarat Photographic Booklet". Booklet printed with an address area with title and kookaburras. Produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Contains on pages 107 - 114 an item presented at the Ballarat Conference on Engineering Heritage during March 1999. Paper written by Warren Doubleday, titled "Conservation Planning and a 1905 Electric Tramcar". Fourteen papers presented at the conference contained within the volume. Paper has photographs of No. 12, recovery, work and other Ballarat photos. Printed on glossy white paper with two colour front cover - brown and black. All have the Southern Cross Hotel in the background .1 - No. 31 crosses Drummond St, Gardens via Sturt St West, with two Johnnie Walker Roof adverts. .2 - No. 40 turns from Drummond St South en route to Lydiard St North, while another bogie car waits. Both trams have an electric cooking roof advert. .3 - No. 17 crosses Sturt St with two bogie trams in the view - appears to have been taken before .2. Yields information about the use of the Jelbart road roller by the Ballarat Tramways and the sale of a unit to the City of Ballarat.Set of documents concerning the Ballarat Jelbart Bros road roller that the SEC had purchased. .1 - Photocopy of part copy of a letter between Jelbart Bros and the City of Ballarat, dated 24/7/1923 concerning the purchase of a roller, guarantee and withholding a sum of money. Below the letter is an image of a roller with the name "Ballarat Electrical Tramways" written on it. .2 - Reproduction of a photograph of the roller pre 1936, working on tram track. The roller has the words "Ballarat Electric Tramways" painted on the side of it. Yields information about the reconstruction of track at Hospital Corner and the way tram services were arranged and the corner itself.Negative and Digital image of the Wal Jack Ballarat Negative file of No. 35 crossing Sturt St while trackwork is being undertaken to replace diamond crossing at Hospital corner. The tram has the destination of Lydiard St North and is proceeding to Drummond St North to reverse. Based on Reg Item 5623, the work was done June 1951. In the background is H. E. Black and white print from the State Library of Victoria, June 1999 of a horse tram crossing the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Street Ballarat c1890. Tram is travelling east to Grenville St. on the south side of Sturt St. (wrong side these days). Has the Ballarat Post Office building in the background with buildings on the north east side of Sturt St. as well. Has a number of horse drawn cabs in photo and women in white clothing holding umbrellas over their head indicating a hot day. In the right hand side of the photo is the statue of poet Robert Burns. Has number "530" in the bottom left hand corner of photograph. State Library Multimedia Source Catalogue gives the photographer as Charles Rudd, 1849 to 1901, date of photo 1889-1891. Copy made Oct. 2001 for the "gold, Gold GOLD" temporary exhibition - colour laser print onto card, with Velcro dots on rear. Stored in box D1 (Display Box) 02/2003.
