This safe came from the property “Fairview” Tungamah. Victoria. Fairview was owned and farmed by Charles and Nellie Nunn. The safe is at least 100 yrs old and served the family of parents and 12 children well by keeping food cool in the blazing summer days. Beverley Long(McFarlane) remembers it on the farmhouse verandah of her grandparents property near the dairy where fresh milk was separated to produce cream and butter..it cooled meats, and dairy products by strips of hessian kept wet by water stored in the top tank, hanging down around the safe.More than 100 years oldMetal box construction with fly wire covering on all 4 sides. Alva Dorothy GOODEN (1864-1949) Gooden was a china painter who is best known for her decoration of many dishes, plates and vases with Australian wildflowers and blackboy trees. Although Alva Gooden painted on a variety of different china including Wembley Ware, she was not one of the artists employed at the Subiaco WA china factory. Much of her work is simply signed ALVA. Possibly from 17th May 1884 to commemorate North Bendigo Cricket Club winning the Cricket Trophy for that year. From TROVE : A banquet in connection with the above cricket club was celebrated at the Johnson's Reef Hotel last evening. There were about 50 people present. Mr. W. M'Lean, on behalf of the donors of the cricket trophy, presented the handsome claret jug to the president of the North Bendigo Club. Band has J. R C 84 - 13 on back - Possibly J.R (Johnsons Reef) C 84 (Circa 84 - 1884 ) 13 on back possible the number of the player it was given to.3 8cm wooden stick all held by a metal band . From its beginnings in 1958, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop window and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. Exhibitions typically coincided with the annual Kew Community Festival in March, but after 2013 evolved into three new exhibitions yearly at the Kew Court House. Smaller displays continue to be mounted in the Kew Library. John Gartner historical information John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood.
