The Victorian Kennett government, which had already closed Nott Street State School in 1992, declared that due to falling attendance, Graham Street Primary (the last in Port Melbourne) would also have to close. The picket group formed St Patricks' Day 1987 at Graham station as the first earthworks began for closing the railway.They were confronted by police who used physical force to break the picket.
