Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Tool - Scoop, Gaston & Sons, 1920
The mud scoop was used to dig out soil and rocks for dam or road building. Dragging by horse or later by tractor would fill the scoop and releasing the levers would dump contents, similar to a modern day bobcat. The manufacturers are Gaston Bros who produced farming equipment in Kensington, Vic. until 1987. Furniture - Sea Chest, c. 1850s
The Rogers Family lived in Truro (Cornwall), and John Rogers followed his brother to Australia in 1838, at the age of 17. He boarded the Florentia, bringing with him only this sea chest, and after arriving in Sydney John travelled to Victoria where he went to the goldfields. He married Sarah in 1862 when he was 46, and she was 28, and from 1866 to 1872 they lived on Churchill Island, building two cottages which stand to this day. This object is intrinsic to the history of Churchill Island Heritage Farm, as it was the only object that John Rogers - one of the first inhabitants of the Island - brought with him from the United Kingdom. The sea chest is demonstrative of his personal journey as well as a broader pattern of immigration and settlement that occurred throughout Australia in the early nineteenth century. John's travels from Sydney to Victoria, onto the goldfields, and then settling onto Churchill Island - claiming possession of it through 'squatter's rights' - is one that is fundamental to the understanding of the formation of the Island and the development of its modern identity. The chest is now part of the collection of the Churchill Island Heritage Farm and sits on the island’s first building; a cottage Rogers has built himself. It has been part of all Rogers life story and has stayed with the family, passed on to generations until Rogers’s great granddaughter, Helen Sykes, donated it to the museum in 2012. Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, Under Tension, 1963
Boyd argues that modern architecture has triggered a necessity for greater harmony between architects and engineers. Boyd describes the architectural qualities of tension structures through an analysis of several case studies including projects by Frei Otto and Boyd's own house at Walsh St. Being a relatively new concept, Boyd criticises the neglect towards smaller buildings in this structural system, and also highlights some of its shortcomings. A 2-page letter from 'Arthur' (surname unknown) at the University of Melbourne's Department of Civil Engineering provides feedback to Boyd on his analyses of the chosen case studies.Original manuscript of article published in The Architectural Review Vol.134, No.801, November 1963, pp. 324 - 334. Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, The Contemporary Situation in Architecture
Boyd quickly surveys the first generation of modern architecture. The talk then concentrates on where modern architecture turned next: "the search for new richness on the surface and a search for new excitement in form". Boyd focuses on the second generation of modern architects: Edward Stone (surface search) and Eero Saarinen (excitiement search). Several of their influential buildings are critiqued by Boyd. This document includes the whole of the typed manuscript titled "The Crisis in Architecture" (item D522, with edits), and includes two handwritten pages at the start and ends with a handwritten statement about "architectural poetry".
