Document - News Clipping, Jodie Guest, Residents have their say on former shire offices, Diamond Valley News, October 16, p9, 1996
Nillumbik Commissioners used 'reserve power's to permit a controversial Shell service station and Hungry Jackls restaurant development at the former Eltham Shire Office site at 895 Main Road. More than 200 people attended the Council meeting in the public gallery and protested at the decision. 32 personal submissions were made to Council's Planning Special Committee meeting whose members vioted 3-2 against the development. The Committee consisted of the three Nillumbik Commissioners and three community members (Jim Connor, Bronwyn South and Janet Mattiske). Chief Commissioner Don Cordell, a former Shell employee excused himself from voting and the three communbity memebrs voted against the submission. The other two commissioners, Vin Heffernan and Kevin Abbott voted against it. They then immediately closed the meeting and opened a Council meeting lasting just seconds to use special reserve powers to overturn the decision. Community residents who made submissions included Russell Yeomans speaking on behalf of the Eltham Gateway Action Group and Eltham District Historical Society, Des Ryan on belaf of Eltham Senior Citizens, Angela Newhouse, others on behalf of Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School and Judge Book Village, Tom Munro, Ian Jennings, Margartet Ball a fifth generation descendant of the Shillinglaw family, one of the early settlers of the area and owner of the land that was sold to Council, Frank Burgoyne who said "there will be a lot of creaking and rumbling in the cemetery if this goes through. So many old people who have done so much for Eltham are buried up there and it is up to us to pass on what they left to the younger generation. Eltham is a beautiful spot; why louse it up?" A second article "Anger over reserve power" by Laeta Antonysen provides commentary from the three Planning Special Committee community members, former Eltham Shire Councillor Jim Connor, Bronwyn South and Janet Mattiske about the process that took place and the first time use of the spoecial reserve power to overturn the decision of the committee. Barry Rochford, Nillumbiuk CEO defends the use of the power. The demolition of the former Shire of Eltham offices and proposed sale and development driven by the Commissioners for Nillumbik Shire Council brought the community together in substantial protest at the infrigement of ratepayers democratic say in local government and ciommunity assets combined with protests about inappropraite development of Eltham's Gateway. This issue led to the formation of the Eltham Community Action Group which still operates strongly today (2023) on behalf of the community to ensure appropriate development within the community.895 main road, commissioners, dallas price homes, development application, eltham hub, hungry jacks, nillumbik shire council, re-zoning, shell service station, town planning, eltham gateway, eltham gateway action group, eltham shire offices, shillinglaw farm, shillinglaw trees, jim connor collection, dallas howgate, nillumbik planning special committee, jim connor, bronwyn south, janet mattiske, don cordell, vin heffernan, kevin abbott, russell yeomans, eltham district historical society, eltham senior citizens, des ryan, our lady help of christians primary school, judge book village, angela newhouse, tom munro, ian jennings, margaret ball, shillinglaw cottage, frank burgoyne, andrew biasci, barry rochford -

This is a set of 30 photographs of contractors installing the Army Survey Regiment’s new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 printing press in Lithographic Squadron’s purpose-built printing building at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. Photograph - Print Troop Equipment and Personnel, Lithographic Squadron – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s
This collection of nine photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s. The two Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were made in Germany at a standard map size format and introduced in June 1962 as a two-colour offset press with improved safety features. With an upgrade to a third colour deck in 1968, productivity greatly improved as the two presses could print a five-colour standard topographic map in two passes, rather than the three passes before their upgrade. They were replaced with a single Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour Printing Press in 1990. There is more information on the Ultra-MAN-III, Printing Press on page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. For additional photos, refer to item 6065.10P for Ultra-MAN-III presses. The Krause Wohlenberg in photo .5P was a heavy-duty guillotine to trim bulk printed map stock in the c1970s and c1980s. See item 6069.6P for more information and photos of guillotine equipment. Densitometer readings as shown in photo .6P were essential to the quality control of film and printing processes, reductions in time taken and material wastage. This is a set of nine photographs of Print Troop personnel and equipment from Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s. Photograph, Sir Edward Dunlop, 1986
A large poster of Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop, AC, CMG, OBE (12 July 1907 – 2 July 1993). He was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. He was involved with Legacy on numerous occasions - including a dinner with Clive James in 1993.When he passed away in 1993 there was a tribute in the Answer. Unknown when the photo was taken - perhaps the 1940s (Note; the colour patch on the upper arm.) Photo has possibly been taken on Anzac Day. (Note; Anzac Day badge on left lapel of battle dress jacket and sprig of rosemary rising above decorations pinned on right chest of battle dress jacket.). The Technical Bookshop were tenants in the shopfront premises of Legacy House for many years. This could have been advertising material for Weary Dunlops War Diaries which were published by Penguin in 1986, presumably the poster was given to Legacy in December 1990 when no longer required in store. This shows the Technical Bookshop had a good relationship with Legacy and understood the connection between Weary Dunlop and Legacy.Coloured photo of Sir (Ernest) Edward "Weary" Dunlop that was used to promote a book about him. Book, Melbourne University Press, The Suez war, 1957
Why did the Suez War ever come to pass? Why did Eden, against public opinion and without sufficient military capability, decide to invade Egypt? When Gamal Abdel Nasser decided to nationalize the Suez Canal, Britain and France reacted dramatically, beginning a chain of events that ultimately led to war. But why did Nasser nationalize the canal in the first place? And what part did the United States of America play in sparking the conflict that resulted in war? Paul Johnson skillfully and clearly explains the roots of the war, the many different political factors involved, the resultant invasion and its repercussions. First published in 1957, The Suez War walks us through a conflict that many historians feel should never have taken place, and one that Johnson argues has exposed i(t)he real weakness of Britain i never again can we play our unique and honourable role as keeper of the worlds conscience.p.145.non-fictionWhy did the Suez War ever come to pass? This book is an anthology of poetry written by over 80 migrants who settled in the North East of Victoria. It is a moving evocation of the migrant experience. Many of these migrants had been housed at the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre near Wodonga which began receiving migrants in 1947, Bonegilla became the largest and longest operating reception centre in the post-war era. More than 300,000 migrants passed through its doors between 1947 and 1971. Most of these migrants came from non-English speaking European families escaping their war-torn homelands. Their world had been turned upside down. Many were confused, unsure of where they were going or what the future held for them. Dismissal of a premier: the Philip Game papers (Don Woodward Collection), Foott, Bethia, 1968
Jack Lang was a former NSW ALP state treasurer and was elected Premier on two occasions. His government was dismissed in his second term of government by the State Governor due to his defying the Commonwealth Government's financial agreements' legislation. Sir Philip Game was the State Governor who dismissed Lang. The author of this book is the daughter of the secretary to the Philip Game. Unlike Sir John Kerr (who dismissed Prime Minister Whitlam in 1975), Game expressed some uncertainty about whether his decision to sack Lang's government was sound: "In spite of the popular endorsement of my assassin's stroke, I am still wondering if I did right. I still believe that Lang has a great deal of right on his side, that a lot of what he advocates will have come to pass, and that the extremists on the other side are a greater danger than extreme Labour." (From a personal letter written by Sir Philip Game on July 2nd, 1932.)" (Back dust jacket.)Political and social history.Book; 223 pages. Functional object - Bible Rest, circa 1938
This decorative brass Bible rest was presented to the Mission to Seamen in Williamstown in memory of Richard Hodgkiss, after his death on December 14th 1938, by Mrs M A Hodgkiss. It was used during services at the Williamstown Missions to Seamen and is now part of the St Nicholas Seamen's Church Collection. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served the world's seafarers since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This item is significant historically for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The Bible rest is historically significant for its connection to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, an organisation of women, formed to support seafarers. It is also connected to one of its members, Mrs Hodgkiss, who presented it to the organisation. The connection of this item to the Mission to Seamen and to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. Lectern, tabletop design, also called a Bible rest or book rest: brass, rectangular surface with clover motifs holes in each corner. Triangular leg frames are screwed beneath the short to create a slope. The lower edge has a vertical, decorative shelf. The inscription is on the top surface, dedicated to Richard Hodgkiss, 1938. This item is in our St Nicholas Seamen's Church Collection. "In Loving Memory of Richard Hodgkiss - passed away 14 12 38.
