The 1889 London Dock Strike grew from unrest about poor living conditions as a result of the casualised labour force. Money raised across Australia (30,000 pounds) helped to support striking workers to continue the action and feed their families. Bank book of the "Shipping Strike Fund", 3 September 1890-17 January 189?
The 1890 Maritime Strike: marine officers walked out because shipowners would not negotiate terms and conditions of employment whilst the Mercantile Marine Officers' Association was affiliated with the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Union officials proposed to disaffiliate on the condition that employers would agree to meet and reach a compromise with union delegates. The shipowners refusal to meet triggered strike action.The Maritime Strike demonstrates an historical example of an employer's attempt to undermine workplace unionism. The photo is of Mr. P.F. Walker's newsagency at 100 Union Road, Surrey Hills. Behind the counter is Miss Bessie Guildford who in the 1940s took over the haberdashery shop of the Misses Orr beside the former A.N.Z. Bank. (In 2018 this site is occupied by Interdrape).A black and white photograph showing the interior of a shop with lots of books on shelves and newspapers on the counter. Taken in January 1982; very similar to SHP0635. Surrey Family Hotel (McNeill's Family Hotel) was built in 1888 by Alexander McNeill. It closed as a hotel after the Local Option vote in 1920. Vic Dartnell joined his cousin Percy Cathcart in a pharmacy on the opposite corner in 1936 and moved it to this corner in 1940. His son John followed as the pharmacist and then his daughter Amanda. After the Dartnell family sold the business, the pharmacy continued in a similar manner as a compounding pharmacy and retained 'Dartnell' in its name. Black and white photo of Union Road at the intersection of Canterbury Road. On the left the edge of the Surrey Gardens can be seen and on the right the Dartnell's Pharmacy building on the SE corner and McNeill's Family Hotel building (pre-renovation) on the NE corner. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection. The inscriptions on the reverse may indicate it was used in the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood News.Black and white photo of Union Road looking south towards Canterbury Road. This was part of an exhibition mounted by the Surrey Hills State Savings Bank in 1976. The original print had a text which was included in our copy print as follows: "EVEN IN 1916, WATER SUPPLIES FOR MANY SURREY HILLS FARMERS AND MARKET GARDENS STILL / CAME FROM THE STAND-PIPE AT THE WARRIGAL ROAD TRAM TERMINUS.
