Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Belinda Woodruff, Spirit of the Ballarat Winter Festival by Belinda Woodruff, 1998
"The idea behind this artwork installation ‘Spirit of the Ballarat Winter Festival’ was to incorporate arts and cultural symbology as if it were painted like a brush stroke upon the footpath yet embedded like a time stamp within the urban streetscape. ‘Spirit of the Ballarat Winter Festival’ offers an unexpected burst of colour and vibrancy within the Ballarat CBD." This artwork was created as pert of the Ballarat Winter Festival in 1998. The Spirit of the Ballarat Winter Festival mosaic is an interpretation of the Ballarat Winter Festival logo image designed by Paul McKenna. Principal Artist Belinda (Bel) Woodruff then trading as Deevine Mosaics received Project Support from Anne Bonighton and City of Ballarat Community Arts Department staff. Vitrified glass tiles adhered to a pre-cast concrete form - installed into the footpath.SPIRIT OF THE / BALLARAT WINTER FESTIVAL / MOSAIC BY/ DEVINE ORIGINALS / SUPPORTED BY / COMMUNITY ARTS - 1998 -

Photograph - Construction of the Kew Civic Centre, 1972
The Kew Civic Centre, as opposed to the adjacent Kew Civic Hall (see also Kew City Hall), was built to house a new Council Chamber and Council Offices in 1972. The Kew Library was to be located on the ground floor and accessed from the current carpark. This building replaced the former Town Hall in Walpole Street, Kew which had served as a town hall from 1865-1972. After the sale of the old Town Hall, the new Civic Centre was built to a design of the architects A K Lines, MacFarlane & Marshall. A fit-out of the building was still occurring when councillors and council officers moved into the building. In 1987, the Kew Library (and the Kew Historical Society) moved across the road to the reconfigured Civic Hall. The Civic Centre, pictured here, was ultimately sold to Trinity Grammar School following the amalgamation of Kew into the City of Boroondara. These four black and white photographs were taken by a photographer in the City Engineer's Department during the final construction phase. Each is dated and inscribed with a description.Tiling the steps leading from the forecourt to the new Kew Civic Centre in 1972.Annotated verso: "Civic Centre - Forecourt / 16.7.72"kew civic centre, kew civic offices, city of kew -- council chamber -

Photograph, "Aberystwyth" 40 Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills, 29 January 1998
Built about 1905 in the Federation style with ‘Queen Anne’ influence. An early owner was Lionel Jones, a journalist and later Eustace Coghill of the Coghill family. After other owners the house was sold and in 1998 removed on two semi-trailers believed to be heading for the San Remo area. The name Aberystwyth possibly come from an association with Wales. Although a thriving sea-side town in the summer, the historic town of Aberystwyth is better known as a university town and the centre of learning for Wales, as it is also home to the National Library of Wales and boasts the largest Arts Centre in Wales. The town is huddled between three hills and two beaches.A coloured photograph of a close-up of the verandah fretwork, the roof without the tiles and a chimney.wandsworth road, surrey hills, federation style, queen anne style, mr lionel jones, journalists, mr eustace coghill, aberystwyth, house names -

Public Art: Tom SANDERS (b.1925-d.2008 Vic, Aus), Tom Sanders, Wall of the Moon (Homage to Miro) - (Location: Eltham Town Square, Arthur Street, Eltham), 1968
Sanders was a well-known local potter who worked for a time with David Boyd at the Martin Boyd Pottery, before returning to Melbourne where he had some association with Arthur Boyd, at the pottery in Murrumbeena. Sanders set up a studio in Eltham in the early 1950s and made the first of a series of architectural ceramic murals with painter and print maker Lawrence Daws in 1956. In 1957 he left for Europe and while there was inspired by the Spanish artist Joan Miro’s unconventional painting style and large scale murals, in particular Wall of the Moon (1957). After returning from his travels in Europe to Australia in 1964, he began to work solely on creating ceramic murals, some of which were commissioned for Southland Shopping Centre in Cheltenham, Melbourne, 1968 (now demolished), the National Mutual Centre, Melbourne,1964-5 (now demolished), Dee Why Library, Sydney 1966, Woden Valley High School, ACT, 1967, Tullamarine Airport Melbourne, 1969-70 (now demolished), Perth Concert Hall, 1971 and The University of Melbourne,1975 (with John Olsen). This mural is one of only three remaining in the public realm by Tom Sanders (the others are at the Perth Concert Hall (1971) and at the University of Melbourne (1975). Ceramic mural (earthenware tiles) consisting of a playful/organic abstract design similar in style to the Spanish artist Joan Miro. Shades of blue, yellow and black glazes are layered onto matte black and shiny bronze tiles.
