Book, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), "Electric Tramways of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria - By-Law No. 1 - August, 1965", Aug. 1965
1297 - Booklet with red heavy card cover and 24 pages inside and a four page supplement glued into rear cover giving details of the by-laws operating for the SEC tramways in Ballarat and Bendigo. Gives details of the definitions, fares and charges, sale of tickets, regulating number of passengers, stopping places, nuisances, smoking, dangerous goods, luggage and goods, general matters and fares broken into adult fares for each section and Children's fares and Pensioners' Concession fares for both Ballarat and Bendigo. Note - introduced decimal currency into the fares as well as pence. Document number on front cover "TYE 1-270". This by-law replaced or revoked all previous by-laws and amendments. Came in effect 1/10/1965 with a fare rise. Received Governor In Council approval on 24/8/1965. These fares have been amended in pencil for Ballarat. The amendment pasted into the rear of the booklet is dated 2nd August. 1966 and came into effect on 1/9/1966. 1297.1 - ditto, but actual used copy by D. J. Everett - see Reg. Item 2292 for details of SEC Ballarat Employee. On page one or title sheet, has an additional amendment pasted in - dated 14/1/1969 giving details of fare increases in Ballarat and Bendigo to come into effect 14/1/1969. Single sheet printed both side. See also Reg items 66 and 281 for this sheet of paper by itself. Item added 2/3/2003. 1297.2 - booklet as above for 1297, but without supplements - in as printed condition 8/1965. 1297.3 - as for 1297 with 1966 and two number 1969 supplements pasted into the book. One 1969 supplement at the front and additional at the rear. 1966 supplement pasted into the rear of the book. Has BTPS Catalogue Numbers 207, 208 and 209 written onto the front of the booklet. Four other copies - unnumbered held. Additional items added 10/7/2005. Additional copy of 1297.3 added 6/8/2016 from donation of T. 1037 - Newspaper clipping from The Sun (Melbourne), April 15, 1972 in the Magazine section of the newspaper, called 'Then and Now' about the closure the following day of the Bendigo tramways. Gives an outline history of the tramway system, and two stories about the tramways, one about a driver named "Hellfire Jack" and an accident between a tram he was driving and a horse pulled dray loaded with tomatoes. Has a strong association with the businesses in Bendigo.Newspaper feature section from the Bendigo Advertiser of April 13, 1972, an eight page feature on the closure of the Bendigo tramways. See also item 277.2 - photocopy of this item. Features history of the Bendigo trams, the services, personal stories, photos and advertisements from local commerce - published Thursday April 13, 1972. Tram services closed the following Sunday. The 8 page feature in a single sheet of newsprint, with one half printed upside down to the other half. Includes numerous photos of the trams, one of the last staff photo, and item called "1927 and all that" with the memories of Basil Miller, Senior Traffic Inspector. 2nd copy of the feature section added 12/10/2007 ex Graeme Breydon. 1038.1- copy of the Bendigo Advertiser of April 13 1972 - 16 pages, including the supplement. The supplement section has been "torn" down the middle of the single sheet. On pages and 11, there are other tramway stories - page 2 - a photo of a CRB worker cutting pavement with a motorised saw and on page 11 a item about the White Hills Progress Association opposing the retention of the Bendigo trams - "childish and impracticable". Quotes CRB Divisional Engineer (E.T.Oppy), saying that requests had been received from Council and shop keepers that Christmas shopping not be interrupted by roadworks. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Saturday 18/9/1971 about the details of the last trams to run in Ballarat, and that only tramway employees will be allowed to ride back to the depot from Sturt St. Notes that the Mayors of Ballarat and Sebastopol will drive the trams for part of their runs in the municipalities. Quotes tramway superintendent Mr. L. J. Denmead. Gives times the last trams were time to leave the Lydiard St North terminals, that 40 is to be the last tram, that it was to be driven by Mr. L. Walker with Mr. H. Knight as conductor. Ballarat Mayor, Cr. Chisholm was to receive the last tram at the depot. The first section of the film was to feature the last run of the trams in Ballarat the following Sunday. Gives names of the elected office bearer, details of proposals, some costs, alternative sites and that a tram was chartered before the meeting. 1071.1 - photocopy of the article added 24/1/2008. Has the names of those elected highlighted in pink ink. Second cutting dated "14/7/71" from the Courier titled "Three stage plan for phasing out of trams" of the three stage plan for phasing out of the trams in Ballarat. The plan was announced by Transport Regulation Board the previous day. Clipping from the Courier, Ballarat, Monday April 19, 1971, titled "Move to Keep some trams for Tourists" front page as it gives the price (of 6 cents) and number of pages (16), with the article about the first positive move to establish a working tramway museum in Wendouree Parade as a historical feature and tourist attraction was made with the formation of a project committee yesterday. Covers the formation of the Lake Wendouree Tramways Museum Committee, 50 people attending the meeting at Brown Hill, mentions Mr. Maurice Calnin, Mr. C. (Bill) Jessup, (spelt Jessop) and gives notes on proposals, other similar museum and potentials. Item was spread over two pages, second part on page 13. Historically significant for at the time it demonstrated aspects of the evolution of Ballarat Tramways and yields information about the formation of the tramways, the Councils viewpoint and has a strong association with the Mayor of the time.Twenty two page book, produced by photocopying, side stapled and bound with a red plastic binding, titled "Mayor's Special Report Ballarat Tramways", dated 20 September 1971 for presentation to the City of Ballaarat Council Meeting 27 Sept. 1971 and signed by the Mayor, J.A.Chisholm. Note pages 18 and 19 have been reversed. Comprises: Page 1 - map (image 1829i1) - of Ballarat (Ballaarat) showing the horse tram routes in red (appear to have been drawn in with a red pencil). Black and white photograph of SEC Ballarat No. 21 decorated for the 1969 Ballarat Begonia Festival. Photographed at a Wendouree Parade crossing loop by Brian Weedon 2/3/1969. Tram is painted white - based on the Myer's Christmas tram of 1968 (See Reg. Item 1881) and used later for the Ballarat Base Hospital Appeal May 1969 Begonia Festival (See Reg. Item 1885). Theme: Festival Showboat. Tram has destination of "Gardens via Drummond Nth", a sign under the headlight "Begonia Festival Feb. 28 Mar. 10". On the side of the tram has the various festival activities within circles and a paddle wheel with the words around it of "Festival Showboat" The roof advertisement board says "Ballarat Begonia Festival Feb. 28 March 10th 1969" and on the base of the sides a sign saying "Wave upon Wave of Festive Activities".
