The photograph was taken at the wedding of Poppy Lekatsas and Floros Demetriades at the 'Evangelismos' Greek Orthodox Church in East Melbourne on 19th April 1936. The photograph is an excellent image of the interior of the church at that time. Along with baptisms, the wedding ceremony (which also incorporates the betrothal) is a very important occasion within the Orthodox community. The service is rich with symbolism. The Evangelismos Greek Church is the oldest Greek church in Melbourne, established in the early 1900s. A KEY MELBOURNE LANDMARK Although primarily dedicated to providing for the welfare of visitors from abroad, the Mission has always been a community-based organisation, and its doors are always open to the general public. Today, the Flinders Street complex lends its ample space to a variety of community pursuits – including yoga classes, religious sermons and gallery exhibitions. The Mission also continues as a popular venue for weddings and other social events, mainly due to the endearing historical connections and unique architecture and ambience. It is a distinctive and significant feature of Melbourne’s riverside streetscape. This window, titled ‘Thou of Little Faith’ is part of a pair that were installed at around the time the Mission was built in 1917. It is dedicated to a prominent family member of the ‘Forges of Footscray’ store fame, who were great supporters of the Mission’s work.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. These four items came from the wedding cake made for the 1942 wedding of Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived in Sydney. Wedding cakes today often continue to be decorated with items similar to these. These cake decorations are of interest as examples of wedding ornaments of the mid 20th century and as mementoes of the 1942 wedding of two Warrnambool residents, Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. On the back is a slit opening fastened with hook and eye and glass clear buttons. Below the slit are eight glass buttons with false rouleau button loops. From the wedding trousseau of Doris Cora Halkyard, nee Wrigley, who married Arthur John Stanley Halkyard in 1912. The couple lived at Barone, 9 Moule Avenue, from around 1951 until 1970. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970). Doris, the final member of the Black family to inhabit the house, was Archibald's granddaughter. Formally Miss Sharlene Barry now Mrs Ron Drager, the great grand daughter of the girl for whom the dress was originally made in England. The wedding was in Ceylon, and later the dress travelled with the happy couple to Australia. In total the dress has been worn four times. It missed one generation and then was sent to Adelaide for the wartime wedding of Sharlene's aunt, Mrs Hubbard. It returned to Melbourne for the wedding of Sharlene's mother Mrs Barry. The elaborately rouched dress with tight bodice and slight bustle effect was altered for the 1941 wedding.Used in 1950's for fourth wedding. Dress altered from the original dress made in 1886.
