James Venn Morgan was known affectionately as ‘The Father of Kew’. Born in Somersetshire on February 21, 1823, he sailed to Australia in April, 1851. James V. Morgan, was a member of one of the first parties to leave for the diggings. At Chewton, near Castlemaine his party tried their luck in an abandoned shaft, and in two weeks returned to Melbourne after having won 35lb weight of gold. James Venn Morgan was content with his success, and induced his partners to invest their money with him in land. After obtaining the advice of a friend, the party negotiated with Mr Samuel Watts, of Collingwood, who had recently purchased land from the Crown, and from him they took over at £15 an acre about 32 acres of land in the district that is now known as Kew. This land extended from where the Kew Post-office now stands to the locality of the Boroondara Cemetery. Here it was that Mr Morgan decided to settle, and, after having had the land surveyed, the partners apportioned it by drawing straws for the four sections into which it had been divided. One of them sold his holding later in the year for £100 an acre, and was sorry for it afterwards. In 1853 Mr. Morgan built the first house in Kew, and this house is the one in which he still resides. Here with his wife, he settled down to market gardening and dairying. So successful was the new venture that he induced his father and other members of the family to come out to Australia to assist him. Gradually the district became settled, Mr. Morgan parted with a portion of his holding, and subdivided and built on the remainder, which he still retained. In 1884 he found himself in a position to retire from active business. He celebrated his 100th birthday in 1923. He was later to die in the same year. Ronald (Bunna) WALSH was born in Port Melbourne in 1933. Starting his career as a waterside worker he went on to become an official of the Waterside Workers' Federation and President the the South Melbourne ALP. In 1979 he was elected the the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Albert Park. Throughout his parliamentary career he held a number of portfolios and was a great supporter of all things related to his birthplace, Port Melbourne. The Springthorpe Memorial is an elaborate late 19th century memorial located within Boroondara General Cemetery. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the memorial for the Melbourne doctor John Springthorpe, in honour of the doctor’s wife. Construction began in 1897, and the memorial was unveiled in 1901. On the sarcophagus is sculpted group of figures by Bertram Mackennal. Rare postcard showing details of the figurative group o n the monument and its original glass case.This close-up of two of the figures shows an angel leaning over the representation of Dr John Springthorpe’s wife. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee John Sullivan, a long serving Legatee, on 2 August 197. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee John Sullivan was President in 1991, he had joined Legacy in 1983 proposed by his father-in-law Morrie Tonkin. He had served in WW2 as a Flight Lieutenant in the RAAF with Beaufort Squadrons. William Ward 1820- 1908 was born in Norfolk and emigrated with his wife Ann Ostler aboard the SS Kent in 1853. The voyage took 77days. William Ward JP was a prominent figure in East Brighton . William was elected to the Moorabbin Road Board in 1863, JP at Cheltenham Court, and Shire President 1875-82. He was appointed Post Master at East Brighton in 1865 and held the position until his death in 1908. William's Municipal career extended over 30 years and the 'Southern Cross Newspaper Brighton paid him tribute in the obituary January 25th 1908. William and Anne Ward had 10 children but only 5 survived. Elizabeth Emma Ward 1963- 1921, their eldest child, married Henry Box 1839-1913 and they had 9 children but 2 died in infancy. Henry Box purchased land in Tucker Road East Brighton (Bentleigh) 1870 to establish a market garden . David Adam, pictured on the right with his wife, Judy, joined the International House Council in 1966, served on the Executive and Finance Committee in the 1970s, and became Chair of the Council from 1979 to 1986. Judy Adam served on the Ladies' Auxiliary throughout the period. Peter Bobeff, on the left of the image, was the resident law tutor at International House from 1965 to 1967, departing upon his marriage. He returned to serve on the Executive and Finance Committee in the 1970s and 1980s, and became Chair of the Council from 2001 to 2008. Mr John Herron and his wife Isa Mary Herron purchased the house at 4 Vickery Street Bentleigh in 1950 from Miss M Marriott. Isa May (nee Kennedy) was the granddaughter of James Jones a very early settler in Moorabbin Shire and Miss M Marriott was a descendant of the early settler market gardeners Marriott family. Mr Herron lived there until 1989 and the house was demolished and turned into a carpark for the busy Shopping precinct of Centre Road, Bentleigh. The Marriott family were early settler market gardeners from 1878 in the area of Dendy’s 1841 Special Survey. Isa May Jones, the grand daughter of James Jones married John Herron in 1940. James was the son of Philip Jones , a chair-maker, who settled in the area of East Brighton, now Bentleigh, in 1852.
