The Hedge, aka Thomas Knee's house. Thomas Samuel Knee (born c. 1881in Lilydale) married Jane Maggs c. 1912, Thomas Samuel Knee's father Thomas Knee (married to Sarah Hardidge and who it appears was also an orchardist in Yarra Road) was rated for the land as vacant land at the turn of the century (c. 1900) Thomas Samuel Knee rated as owner of vacant land (CA14B of over 20 acres1911-12 and as a house 1912-13, next year CA 14C added making a total of 39 acres. It appears that Thomas Samuel Knee and his wife Jane lived at the property until 1949 when they moved to Montrose. In 1949 it was purchased by Hubert Victor (Vic) Eggleton after they migrated from Banstead in Surrey England. They had four boys Peter (who did a lot of the farming with Gladys), Brian, Michael and Roger. It was mixed farming: lemons, cherries, eggs, chickens and Gladys bred Spaniel dogs too. They had 2 dairy cows and a draft horse. The farm was larger then and was subdivided at a later date. The big dam was added too. the painting of the house was painted by a cousin of the Lusks. Ownership: Thomas Samuel Knee 1912-1949, Eggletons, 1949 - c.1953, then Timms, c. 1953 - early 1970s then Lusks early 1970s to c. 2012. The Lusks built a new house and after that the old house had various tenants. -

Clare Roper collected and maintained newspaper clippings of historical interest to the Kiewa Valley Historical Society.Clare Roper grew up and lived in the Kiewa Valley at Tawonga. She was a member of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for many years.A vanilla, green with sunset picture 'Photo Album' used to save newspaper clippings dated 1949 to late 1980s mostly covering the North East of Victoria. The Photo Album has 3 steel rings that snap open and shut. The pages have a clear plastic sheet that lifts off to place the newspaper cuttings which then 'stick' to the page. The clear cover is then replaced on top.There are 60 pages used both sides.Front cover "Photo Album". Catalogue card reads, "Jamboree Athletic Meeting held at Ringwood, 8th January 1949. The carnival was historic in that for the first time in the annals of Ringwood, a liquor booth operated at the grounds and bookmakers laid the odds". An addition note on the back of the photograph reads, "The Bookies and the Booth. The bookmakers are apparently a law unto themselves. The Council had refused permission for the bookmakers to operate on the reserve, but here they are." -

Frank Wright was born at Smeaton, lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner, and his large family was musical, winning many awards in the singing and instrumental areas. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and by the age of 18 was the Australian Open Cornet Champion. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and as conductor Frank won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. He became well known and respected as a conductor and adjudicator of band competitions at very high levels in Australia and New Zealand. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, as well as at Ballarat’s South Street and in Australia and New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. This photograph shows a scene from the first time Allan Charles Quinn attended Carnival in Rio. Although having made several trips to South America previously, he had not experienced Carnival before. The photograph is also complemented by a letter written to his mother including a description of Carnival. This photograph was exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.The Allan Charles Quinn collection forms a pictorial autobiography of life at sea for a young man in the period immediately following World War II. The collection also includes a series of letters between Allan and his mother, some explaining the photographs and some talking about other experiences or mundane situationsBlack and white photograph of Carnival float in Rio de Janeiro.
