Photograph, Dr Edna Gault, 1988
Query: Originally from a newspaper article. Dr Gault enrolled in U3A research aged 84 years, after retiring from psychiatry. She joined a U3A current affairs class and thrived on the weekly tutorial and interaction with other students. Quote: “My tutor Don Graves suggested I do further research so I have been studying what makes Aboriginal women so strong in their community. I have been doing an interview once or twice a week and writing it up.” - extract from ‘The Sun’ by Amanda Place 23 August 1988. Dr Edna Gault and her husband Dr. Edward Woodfall Gault set up practice in Surrey Hills in 1931 and built their home at 693 Canterbury Road, on the corner of Florence Road in 1933. In 1937 they went to India as medical missionaries, taking over the missionary hospital at Azamgah, established by his sister Dr. Adelaide Gault, who had to return to Australia on account of ill-health. They finished up at Vellore, South India. Dr Gault was born Edna Isabel Baylis in 1904 in NSW; she married her husband in 1932 in Chatswood, NSW. Later homes were: 13 Kasouka Road, Camberwell (1949); Warrandyte (1963) and Ivanhoe (1980). There is a biography of her life entitled 'A very amazing life' by Bette McLaughlin, a copy of which is in this collection. ... Tribe -- Aboriginal Educators. Traditional Aboriginal Society ...Traditional Aboriginal Society was an oral culture so that the history, stories, and songs and knowledge of Spirituality, Laws, Customs and Values were communicated verbally for thousands of years. The invasion of Europeans caused destruction of tribal groups by disease and killings. It limited the use of language, exchange of stories, land use and the important performance of rituals and ceremonies. Europeans used their world view as a mirror and through their observations, documents, diaries, reports and stories were full of racist comments and ignorant opinions of a lifestyle and culture of which they had little understanding. This book was the result of many months of research by a group of Swan Hill Aboriginal Educators. Book, Robertson, Craig, Buckley's Hope : the real life story of Australia's Robinson Crusoe, 1981
Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders. He became an important guide and interpreter in the crucial first years of the European conquest of the Port Phillip region. Then, as the Aborigines were engulfed by the flood of white men, Buckley found himself in no-man's land, mistrusted by his former black friends and by the white society who so misunderstood them. He was reviled, so harshly that his reputation has suffered to this day. This is William Buckley's story. It is a story based on fact, about a real Robinson Crusoe who was unique in Australia's history. And it is also a story of European intruders imposing their savage will on an alien, ancient continent. Rarely has Australian history come more alive than in the pages of this remarkable first novel. Buckley's life with the Aboriginal people of Port Phillip between 1803 and 1835; subsequent life in white community ; includes glossary of Aboriginal words (p. 271-280).288 p. : 3 maps ; 22 cm.Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders.
