Photograph - 'Studley House', Nolan Avenue [Kew], c. 1965
The first section of Studley House, now part of the preparatory school for Xavier College conducted by the Society of Jesus in Kew, was built in about 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson, an early settler in the district, as a two-storey residence in the Classical Revival style. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the house was purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squatter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. (Victorian Heritage Database, 2023)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Wedding Dress, 1942
This wedding dress came from the estate of Ena Heazlewood. Born in Warrnambool in 1920 Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. She was wearing this wedding dress. The dress was also worn by two other brides – Ena’s sister-in-law. Mavis McDonald when she married Jim Heazlewood in December 1942 and her sister Rita Todd when she married Bill Kane in 1947 (the bodice of the dress was altered for Rita’s wedding). The photograph shows the wedding of Field James (Jim) Heazlewood and Mavis Marie McDonald who were married on 23/12/1942This dress is of of some significance as it is not only a lovely example of a 1940s wedding dress but it has local provenance, being worn by a Warrnambool person, Ena Todd when she married another Warrnambool identity, Jack Heazlewood in 1942. This is a white lace dress with a fitted bodice, a square neckline and a lace band at the waist edged with satin. The dress has set-in long sleeves with a press stud clips at the wrists. The waist at the back has a loose band of lace material. The skirt is slightly flared and is floor length at the front with a cotton net frill edging, now slightly tattered. The dress at the back has a wide rounded train with a net frill edging. The side ends of the train have inserted lace panels. The dress is slightly yellowed with age. vintage clothing, todd & heazlewood families, warrnambool -

Originally named 'McInnes' after a local selector, this station opened during construction of the Crowes railway on 1 May 1911. The name was altered to Weeaproinah, the second station of that name, on 9 December 1912, after the parish in which the station was situated. (The original 'Weeaproinah' on the railway became earlier 'Dinmont' in the Olangolah Parish.) The station comprised a passenger shelter and a loop siding with a ramped platform for a sheep and pig race. A departmental residence was built for a track repairer based at the station, but no station or caretaker staff were employed there. The residence was burnt down during the 1919 bushfire but it was replaced and remained in use as a departmental residence until 1930. Weeaproinah became an unattended crossing station in December 1927 under the Train Section Order system.B/W. Weeaproinah mallee shed. In the shed there are five large wall-mounted posters and a cream can. An unlocked door with a "Skins / Hides" poster gives access the inside. Scrap Book (4 pages) with 'press-out' illustrations. These are inserted loosely in between the hard covers of a business book issued by the Commercial Union Assurance Co Ltd (Agent for Bendigo: Mr George G McColl printed on front cover). Printed on inside back cover is ''Record of Fire Policies and unused columns for such information - there are 'scribbles' on both inside front and back covers with the repeated (child's?) initials of EJH. A printed date may have been altered to be 1892. The rhyme ''Ten Little Nigger Boys'' (12 illustrations) are on four of the loose pages and three English monarchs are grouped on the other loose page. The ''Ten Little Nigger Boys'' is notable in that it is now politically incorrect and it is also brilliantly coloured and appears to be a very fine example of this type of 'press-out' illustration available for scrapbooks.business, retail, insurance, commercial union assurance co ltd., bendigo. mr george g mccoll -

Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Book - Non Fiction Australian Mammals, Furred Animals of Australia, 1946
This book was written before the "preservation of Australian Flora and Fauna" movement became a household edict. The book covers all the "known" marsupials of the time and coloured prints are provided where required to show physical and other distinguishing features. Time and extensive searches of hard to reach places in Australia has uncovered a greater range of marsupials than presented in this book. Rural Australia (1940s) had not been as developed and altered as the 1980s onward. This book was used in Primary schools as reference material. Although rural school children would have come across many "real life" encounters with some of the mammals referred to, the diversity and range of mammals presented in this book is quite extensive. Most "city" born children would have only seen the mammals presented in this book at animal zoos in the larger cities. This book details the Australian wide range of mammals, and not just those which school children in the Kiewa Valley could meet "face to face". However the rural based pupils would find the chapters and coloured prints more "real" than city located students because they are living day to day in the Australian bush, home to all the various mammals and marsupials presented in this book. This green coloured hard covered book has 178 double sided printed pages and twenty five plate detailing the appearances of native mammals. The first two pages are frayed and all pages show colouration (yellow) of age. The book has a clear plastic cover as protection placed at a later dateOn the spine "FURRED ANIMALS OF AUSTRALIA" and underneath "BROUGHTON" and at the bottom "ANGUS & ROBERTSON"australian mammals and marsupials, nature books, australia wild life -

Slides, Box of Glass Slides Capital Theatre, 1940s
These glass slides were made to be used at interval time at the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. The Capitol Theatre (originally the Warrnambool Theatre) was erected in 1930 on the site occupied by the Hotel Mansions which included a Palais de Danse and a Mansions Theatre. All were destroyed by fire in 1929. The Capitol Theatre was built in the Spanish Mission style and is one of the few surviving Spanish Mission style theatres in Victoria. However the interior was largely altered in 1994 when the Capitol was converted into a three-screen complex. But some decorative features of the old interior were kept and these included the original proscenium. Stan Stevens and his family were associated with the Capitol Theatre management for many years from 1972. The Capitol Theatre still operates today. These slides are of considerable importance as they are a wonderful example of picture theatre-going in the 1940s and 50s when slides were shown during the interval times and many of these were locally made. The reason for showing the words of songs is not known but it is presumed they had sing-a-longs during the intervals, possibly to boost morale during the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular interest and feature such local businesses as the Woollen Mill, Sungold Dairies, E.A. Wright Motors and Alex Donaldson Timber and Hardware Supplies. These are small square glass slides (numbered1 to 92) which were shown in the 1940s at the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool at interval time (advertisements, words of songs etc). Some of the slides have been professionally produced and some, especially the words of songs, have been hand-made and handwritten or typed. Some are in colour and some are blank. In others the contents have been obscured or obliterated. Most of the slides have been taped around the edges and some have more sturdy frames made of tape. capitol theatre, warrnambool, stan stevens -

Photograph, Studley House, circa 1900, c. 1900
The first section of Studley House, now part of the preparatory school for Xavier College conducted by the Society of Jesus in Kew, Burke Hall, was built in about 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson, an early settler in the district, as a two-storey residence in the Classical Revival style. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the housewas purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squattter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by theschool. Studley House retains evidence of the original 1850s section, plaster and woodwork, and stained glass from its earlier period. - Source: Victorian Heritage RegisterThis work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical SocietyA photograph of the north facing facade of Studley House in Nolan Avenue before the additions made by John Wren..Studley House, Nolan Avenue. Booklet, Nelson Stedman, Napier Before and After the Earthquake of February 3rd 1931, c1931
The earthquake at Napier, also known as the Hawke's Bay Earthquake, took place on 03 February 1931 at about 10.45 am. There was no warning before the ground started to heave and roll in waves. It was not possible to stand without support, and the violent motion caused stone and brick buildings to collapse into the streets causing death and injury to hundreds who were going about there daily business. Fires started almost immediately, and with the water mains shattered, the fire fighters were powerless to stop or prevent the spread of the flames. Within twelve hours the greater part of the business area of Napier and its port was totally destroyed. As a result of the pressure which caused the upheaval, the levels of the town and the surrounding district have been altered. The town and the harbour were raised from five to seven feet, and many parts of the inner harbour became dry land. Document - Advertising item, Matchbox holder, Early 20th century
James Parker and William McMeekin arrived in 1881 in Victoria and commenced their business a large proportion of which was in Warrnambool. They opened up a butter, cheese and pork export trade with South Australia, which operated successfully for sometime before South Australia altered their tariff duties which badly affected trade. After a period dealing with Queensland, they set their sights further afield to London. The Warrnambool butter Factory was commenced around this time and William McMeekin was closely connected with its establishment. They traded in other farm produce and machinery as well as having interests in land, loans and insurance. William McMeekin was a member of the Town Council for some time and J.P. McMeekin was a member of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Society and was a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. Flyer - Coloured, C 1938
Annual wildflower shows took over the Hall's Gap Hall during spring and, in the 1930's, transformed it into a veritable wonderland. So popular were these displays that they have continued through until present times, the format has altered but the display of flowers remains the same. Ladies' Committees were formed to sell art and crafts during shows, and much of the revenue from these events went towards a future new building. In 1938, the Wildflower Show was to be held on 30 September and 1 October, and was to be opened by A. McDonald, Esq., MLA. Admission in that year was 1/- (one shilling), with children being half price (a comparison with record 388 shows that this was the same as the 1933 price). Afternoon tea or supper were also 1/- and an entry fee of 3d (three pennies) was charged per exhibit. In that year the organising secretary was H. Williamson (whose phone no. was 26!).A flyer for the "Grand Wildflower and Nature Show" to be held at the Hall's Gap Hall on 30/09/1938 and 01/10/1938.media, flyers, events, wildflower show -

Photograph, Eltham State School No. 209, Dalton Street, Eltham, c.1918
Eltham Primary School. This building is the earliest building remaining on site today. It was built in 1875 and was the second school building replacing the original 1856 building of stone walls with wooden shingles on the roof. That building needed to be replaced after the stone walls collapsed outwards. In August 1912 the school issued a requisition for remodelling of the school concerned with replacement of the existing windows with larger and wider windows to allow additional light into the school rooms and the erection of a wooden partition in the centre of the room. This work commenced in early 1914 and this photo shows the altered windows. Pre 1921 extension and skylights in roof. Only two low wooden stairs present to enter the porch. These were rebuilt by 1928. A steel mud grate was introduced 1930s/1940s and an infant shelter shed is shown on the 1945 plan. Photo most likely taken between 1914 and 1921.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Negsepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, dalton street, state school no. 209, eltham primary school, eltham state school, schools
