Hugh Myddelton Lewis ('Myd') (1911-1995) wrote a brief account of his association with Melbourne Legacy which is more an explanation of the work of Legacy than a personal history and completely omits to mention that he was President in 1969 and held both an OBD and a Croix de Guerre and twice mentioned in Despatches. He served in the British Army Royal Artillery in the Western Desert from 1939-41 and in France and Germany from 1944-1946, leaving the army in 1955 with the rank of Colonel and moving to Melbourne in 1958. In civilian life he worked as the Manager of Public Affairs with C.R.A. until retiring in 1973. During this time he worked tirelessly for Legacy on many committees and was Chairman of the Co-ordinating Council from 1974-1976.Legacy is identified as 'one of the most important influences' for three decades of his life. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee James George Gillespie, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes a snapshot of his life and career as a surveyor and long history of service in many fields. He was a member of the RMIT Council, on the board of he Royal Women's Hospital - both of whom named building after him. He served on the Hospitals and Charities Commission, and the Nurses Memorial Centre and Greenvale Geriatric Centre. Plus many more. He enlisted in the AIF 18 months after his older brother had been killed on the first day of the landing at Gallipoli. He was in the 46th Battery, 12th Artillery Brigade as a gunner. He served in France and Belgium and was in Paris on the day the Armistice was signed. In World War 2 he was called up and was appointed Assistant-Director of Survey, with a rank of Lieut-Colonel. Jim Gillespie joined Legacy in June 1928, being nominated by Frank Doolan and seconded by Harold Peters. The Bendigo Ordnance Factory began operating in 1942, producing heavy artillery and naval guns. In the late 1990s the then Federal Government-owned facility was sold to the multinational Thales, which continues to operate the factory today. This Bendigo Historical Society collection of glass negatives includes some slides of women working in the munitions factory. Seven slides were included in an album that was prepared for Dr Edith Summerskill who visited Australia in 1944 as part of an Empire Parliamentary Delegation. The album included photographs of Australian women working at the factory during WW2. A copy of the album is in the Collection of the Australian War Memorial.Box 3 of 3, Glass Slide Negatives of the Bendigo Munitions Factory, later known as the Ordnance Factory and then the Australian Defence Industries. Each negative is sealed between two pieces of glass. The edges are sealed with thin pieces of tape.
