This item forms part of the large historic Auburn Heights Recreation Club collection, with items relating to the sports of lawn bowls, tennis and croquet, gifted to the Kew Historical Society in 2020. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria, opened the Auburn Heights Recreation Club in Barkers Road in December 1904. Two years later the greens were improved and a new croquet lawn established. In September 1906, a ceremony was held to open these and also the new pavilion designed by Harry Tompkins.Rare and important early photograph of the opening of a significant sports club in Melbourne1/4 plate glass negative (and accompanying print) of the crowd at the opening of the new greens and croquet lawn in 1906 at the Auburn Heights Recreation Club in Barkers Road, Kew. A document outlining the relevant by-laws produced by the City Of Kew to regulate the minimum size of allotments in Barkers Road, Burke Road, Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road and Studley Park Road, as well as in other streets more generally. The by-laws specify the size of allotments in which single unit dwellings, attached houses and maisonettes, and flats could be built. In the ‘main streets’ a minimum land area for single unit dwellings was 8,100 square feet, with an average frontage of 60’ and a depth of 135’. In other streets this was reduced to an overall size of 6,250 square feet, with an average dimensions of 50’ x 125’. In specifying the land area required by flats, different sizes were regulated for the construction of between two and six flats. Six flats at the time when the regulations were passed must have been the upper limit permitted. Understanding the size of land listed in imperial measurements can be a challenge. Within Australia, the so-called quarter acre block was approximately 11,000 square feet. Those specified in the by-laws would appear to be smaller. The document was pasted on the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection.This is a rare (undated) document produced by the City of Kew defining how subdivision within the municipality should occur. The Kew tram depot is located on the corner of Barkers Road and High Street, Kew. It is one of eight tram depots on the Melbourne tram network. The depot opened on 8 May 1915. The main yard has 12 covered roads. The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The Jaques Estate was a small subdivision of eight residential allotments bordering Jaques Street and Barkers Road in what is now Hawthorn East. Kew tram depot is located on the corner of Barkers Road and High Street, Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Operated by Yarra Trams, it is one of eight tram depots on the Melbourne tram network. W. D. Williams had a chemist shop in Hargreaves Street, Bendigo from 1901 to 1917. He also had a chemist shop in Barkers Road, Hawthorn/ Glenferry 1902-1915 when he sold the business. in 1922 he appears as a chemist in 87 Malvern Road, Malvern.Green and brown prescription book of W.D. Built by John Bournane, Rockingham had a number of occupants before the newspaper magnate David Syme purchased it in 1902. The house in the 1860s and ‘70s was comprised of nine rooms, and was surrounded by a veranda on the front and sides. It was approached from the Kew road by the curve in front of the Hon. S.G. Henty’s mansion of ‘Findon’.In 1955, the Syme family sold Rockingham to the Red Cross Society to be used as a convalescent home for returned servicemen.
