Medal, Khedive of Egypt's Sudan Medal 1896-1908
Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896 -1908 Instituted 12th February 1897 on the approval Abbas Hilmi Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, this medal was initially to commemorate the reconquest of the Dongola province, with the clasps Firket and Hafir included in the original army order (No. 43). Later army orders extended it to cover battles and actions up to 1908 which were commemorated with a further 13 clasps. Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896 -1908 Description: Produced in silver and bronze 39mm diameter. Obverse; the Arabic inscription "Abbas Hilmi the Second" and the year "1314" (Anno Hegirae) Reverse; A tablet inscribed in Arabic "The Reconquest of the Sudan 1314" supporting a trophy of arms. Over this is a centrally positioned oval shield decorated with stars and crescents - in the background is a display of lances and flags. Clasps; Bilingual English/Arabic, 15 issued - see table below. The first six actions commemorated with a clasp (highlighted in yellow) were also covered by the Queen's Sudan Medal. Ribbon: Yellow with a wide central blue stripe - symbolic of the desert and the Nile. Medal, British Queens Medal 1896-97
The Queen's Sudan Medal was awarded British and Egyptian forces which took part in the Sudan campaign between 1896 and 1898. Initially mainly with Egyptian troops but after two British brigades were attached. This campaign is often described as "The reconquest of the Sudan". Some countries like Italy, Germany, France or Belgium were expanding their African colonies, which Sudan could be one, the British decided to occupy it. One of the most famous battles was the Battle of Omdurman where Lt. Winston Churchill fought Its a circular, Silver or Bronze made medal, 36.5mm diameter. The obverse has the legend "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX" and the crowned effigy of Queen Victoria. On the reverse a plinth inscribed "SUDAN" supported by Nile lilies where Victoria sits holding a laurel wreath and a palm branch and behind her are the British and Egyptian flags.medal sudan -

Medal, Atlantic Star, abt 1945
The Atlantic Star was awarded to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945. It was designed primarily for convoys and their escorts and anti-submarine forces, as well as for crews of fast merchant ships that sailed alone. Eligibility Awarded for six months service afloat, in the Navy, the Merchant Navy and by Army and Air Force personnel serving on HM Ships, in the Atlantic and Home Waters. Awarded to aircrew who have taken part in operations against the enemy at sea within the qualifying areas for Naval personnel, subject to two months service in an operational unit after earning the 1939-1945 Star. Qualifying dates are 3 September 1939 to 8 May 1945. The Medal The Atlantic Star is a six–pointed star of yellow copper zinc alloy. The obverse has a central design of the Royal and Imperial cypher, surmounted by a crown. The cypher is surrounded by a circlet containing the words ‘The Atlantic Star'. Stars issued to Australian personnel have recipient names engraved on the plain reverse. The Ribbon The Atlantic Star ribbon has three vertical stripes of blue, white and sea green, shaded and watered. The colours represent the colours of the Atlantic Ocean. Clasps Two clasps were issued for the Atlantic Star: Air Crew Europe France and Germany Regulations only allow one clasp to be worn with the Star. These documents concern a legal case involving the Town Of Warrnambool, Elizabeth Granter and James Harris. The lawyer in the case was William Ardlie. The son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, William Ardlie was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool from the late 1860s to the early 1930s and was active in community affairs. Elizabeth Granter, involved in the financial side of the legal case, was the wife of James Granter, another prominent Warrnambool identity of the 19th century. Granter was a quarryman and a road contractor and he and other members of his family seem to have been involved in other legal battles with James Harris, an employee of the Warrnambool Tramway, also involved in the financial aspects of the legal case. These three documents are of minor interest as an example of the legal cases undertaken by the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie. These are three 1888/1889 documents related to the legal practice of William Ardlie. Item One is a document listing the details of a court case involving Elizabeth Granter, James Harris and the Town Council of Warrnambool and is a sheet of paper with the details of the case written on both sides of the paper in black ink. The back page has a green stamp to the value of one penny. Item Two is a letter from Charles Hider, the bookseller, in regard to an item received by H.A.C. Macdonald, the Town Clerk of the Town of Warrnambool. The handwriting is in black ink. Item Three is a letter from the Warrnambool Tramway Department to Mr Ardlie regarding the request of James Harris for a small sum of money. This letter is a sheet of paper folded in two and written in black ink on one of the four sides.
