City of Greater Bendigo - Civic Collection
Artwork, other - Bendigo Pottery Toby Jug, Bendigo Pottery, Ned Kelly, c 1977
Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running Pottery’s in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. The City of Greater Bendigo has had a long history of partnering with Bendigo Pottery and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. Ned Kelly is one of Australia's most iconic outlaws. Kelly was born and raised in rural Victoria, the third of eight children to Irish parents. His father, a transported convict, died in 1866, leaving Kelly, then aged 12, as the eldest male of the household. The Kelly's were a poor selector family who saw themselves as downtrodden by the squattocracy and as victims of persecution by the Victoria Police. While a teenager, Kelly was arrested for associating with bushranger Harry Power and served two prison terms for a variety of offences, the longest stretch being from 1871 to 1874. He later joined the "Greta Mob", a group of bush larrikins known for stock theft. A violent confrontation with a policeman occurred at the Kelly family's home in 1878, and Kelly was indicted for his attempted murder. Fleeing to the bush, Kelly vowed to avenge his mother, who was imprisoned for her role in the incident. After he, his brother Dan, and associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart shot dead three policemen, the government of Victoria proclaimed them outlaws. Kelly died aged 25 at Melbourne Goal after being captured by Police in Glenrowan and sentenced to death. (Source Wikipedia).Brown glazed slip cast jug. Great Stupa of Universal Compassion
Artwork, other - Medicine Buddha thangka
Thangkas are cloth scrolls unique to Tibetan Buddhism, depicting deities, venerated spiritual figures, or common religious symbols. Intended for personal meditation or instruction of monastic students, they are invested with the spirit of a deity to whom they are consecrated. A thangka is a composite art form consisting of a picture panel which is painted or embroidered; a brocade mounting; and one or more of the following: a silk cover, leather corners, wooden dowels at the top and bottom and metal or wooden decorative knobs on the bottom dowel. This allows a thangka to be rolled up for portability, reflecting its origins in the nomadic lifestyle of Tibetan monks. The Medicine Buddha (also known as Bhaisajyaguru or Sangyé Menla) is revered as the embodiment of healing and associated with practices helping with mental and physical ailments, as well as purifying negative karma. His iconic imagery, including the medicine bowl and healing plant, represents the union of wisdom and compassion as forces of healing. His teachings, rooted in the "Four Medicine Tantras," emphasize that the root of all diseases lies in negative emotions of greed, hatred, and ignorance. The central figure in this old thangka is Medicine Buddha, seated on a lotus throne and surrounded by other deities and figures. He has a bowl in his left hand, and a flower in his right hand. An interesting feature is that his body is not painted blue, as is customary for the image Medicine Buddha. The paint colours were derived from natural ingredients – grinded coral, turquoise and other gemstones. The 'Om Ah Hum' mantra is printed in Tibetan in red ink on the verso of the thangka.buddhist art, tibetan buddhism, holy objects -

Photograph - Group Photograph, 1990
This event, captured in a photograph from 1990, reflects the school’s emphasis on celebration, inclusion, and creating lasting memories for its students. The image serves as a valuable historical artifact, preserving a moment of joy and togetherness from a school that no longer exists but remains fondly remembered. This photograph and associated documentation of the 1990 Christmas picnic at Jacana Primary School hold significant historical and cultural value. Captured during a time when the school was a thriving educational and community hub in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, the image reflects the spirit of inclusivity, celebration, and community engagement that defined the school’s ethos. The event exemplifies the school’s commitment to fostering a nurturing and joyful environment for its students. The annual Christmas picnic was more than a festive occasion—it was a communal ritual that brought together children, families, and staff in a shared experience of joy, tradition, and belonging. The 1990 photograph is particularly significant as it: Documents a community tradition that was central to the school’s identity. Captures the diversity and vibrancy of the student body during a formative period in the area’s demographic evolution. Serves as a visual record of a school that no longer exists, following its closure and amalgamation in the early 2000s. Provides a touchstone for memory and heritage, especially for former students, staff, and local residents. As Jacana Primary School has since been closed and redeveloped, this image and its context serve as a rare and valuable artifact. It preserves a moment in time that speaks to the broader narrative of public education, suburban development, and community life in late 20th-century Melbourne.A glossy colour photograph of children with adults.PH18289 (crossed out) PH-4209 (crossed out) PH-4868jacana primary school, christmas picnic, 1990, jacana, education -
