He enlisted on 22.1.1942 age 18 years 6 months as No 50704 which was a ground staff No. From 12.2.1942 to 12.9.43 he went through various courses at Sale, Lake Boga, Somerset, Richmond and Adelaide. Finally accepted into Aircrew he embarked from Melbourne for Canada for training as a Bomb Aimer on 27.9.1943, arriving Canada via San Francisco 19.10.1943. He then attended Bomb Aimers Courses at Mossbank and Edmonton. Granted a Commission as a Flying Officer on 24.3.1943, embark for England 10.4.1944 and posted to various bases for advanced training. Finally on 7.3.1945 he is posted to No 462 Sqd RAAF flying Halifax Bombers in Bomber Command and begins operations from Foulsham. Arthur completes 8 missions before the war is over with Germany. Darwin was bombed by Japanese fighter bombers from Feb 1942 until Nov 1943. On 19 February 1942 Darwin itself was bombed. Japanese fighters and bombers attacked the port and shipping in the harbour twice during the day, killing 252 Allied service personnel and civilians. On 3 March Broome, in Western Australia, was strafed. In succeeding months air attacks were made on many towns in northern Australia including Wyndham, Port Hedland and Derby in Western Australia, Darwin and Katherine in the Northern Territory, Townsville and Mossman in Queensland, and Horn Island in the Torres Strait. Despite popular fears these raids were not the precursor to an invasion but they did serve to interrupt the use of Darwin's port facilities. The raids also tied up anti aircraft defences and air force units that would have otherwise been sent to more forward areas. David Thomas Andrew No 400247 enlisted in the RAAF on 21.7.40. During a bombing run by No 11 Sqd on Meiktila in central Burma on 5.4.43 two of the Sqd's Blenheim Bombers collided and subsequently crashed. Warrant Officer Andrew was killed. Material held about the launch of a book by John McCredie at Legacy House in 2005. The book is called "Survival of the Fortunate", it is based on letters written from overseas during the Vietnam War to his fifteen year old daughter at boarding school who had asked her father what he had done during the war. The author takes the reader for a journey through his joining the RAAF, his training as a pilot in Australia, subsequent operational training as a bomber pilot in England and culminating in his being sent to India where served nearly two years as a pilot and captain of a Liberator bomber and later as Liberator transport captain. Mr McCredie approached Legacy for help in getting the letters published as a book and Legacy received a government grant to help him. The Book was then launched at Legacy House and proceeds from the sale of the book were forwarded to Legacy once the book broke even. The A47-24 was a B-25D MITCHELL,a twin-engined medium bomber built by NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION COMPANY in Kansas City U.S.A. Initially issued for use by the Netherlands East Indies Air Force as N5-216, The Aircraft was taken on charge by the RAAF in 1944. On the 01/12/44, A47-24 was undergoing flight trials over the Torquay Bombing Range off Pt. Addis,when it appeared to catch fire and subsequently crashed into the sea. The Gardens were a popular venue for Sunday School picnics for many years. She was aged approximately when the photo was taken and her head can just be seen in the middle of the photo. Alice Weatherhead (Cochran) lived firstly in Newport and then Railway Cres Williamstown. She attended the Newport Baptist Church and the Domestic Arts School. At the time of writing the letter she was 91 years of age. She worked at the aircraft factory in Champion Road, Newport making the rear fuselage for Beaufort Bombers. Her father, Tom Cochran, belonged to the Williamstown Horticultural Society.Alice’s photos and written memories encapsulate the intangible heritage of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens. She recalls: playing in the Gardens; using them as her as a place for solace and thinking; while riding to the beach from Newport; walking in crocodile file past the Gardens from her school to the swimming baths, the ‘air of mystery as you walked through those wonderful wrought iron gates’; a place of courtship with the boy she later married. She wrote about seeing a purple flowering plant in a circular bed that was ‘spectacular and inspired me to grow it in my garden’. The Hildersheim Rose is also known as the 1000 year old rose bush, and is the oldest known living rose in the world. It grows on a wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral in Hildesheim, Germany, that is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral and the adjacent St. Michael's Church have been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1985. The Cathedral was destroyed by Allied bombers in 1945 during the Second World War, but the roots of the rose bush survived and it blossomed again among the ruins. The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. They cover the African, Sicily and Italian campaigns. The entire collection comprises 175 photographs. The collection has been divided into sets depicting various aspects of 3 Squadron operations. The above images are representative of this particular set of 31 photographs, featuring Italian and German aircraft abandoned by the Axis as the Allies advanced through Africa and Italy. They range from various versions of the ME109, German bombers and rare and interesting Italian aircraft.
