Members of the Presbyterian faith were among the first settlers in the North-east of Victoria, and in the year 1842 the Presbytery of Melbourne requested the Rev. Peter Gunn, Minister of the Gaelic Church, Melbourne, to visit Presbyterians along the Murray River. This was the first of a series of annual visits, and was of a missionary nature. In May 1851, the Rev. David Hunter Ballantyne was appointed to the Wodonga district based out of Albury. In 1860 the Presbytery of Beechworth was formed, and from it two large presbyteries have grown - Wagga Wagga and Beechworth. In the early days the services at Wodonga were held in the old court house, which still stands. Wodonga Presbyterian Church continued as part of the Parish of Albury until the end of 1887, when it was placed under the administration of the Session of the Beechworth Church, with a home missionary in charge. Mr William Cooper was placed in charge for the first months, then Mr William Smith, a city missionary who had recently arrived from Scotland, was appointed. Mr Smith conducted a cordage factory at Stonleigh. He remained as missionary in charge for the next 10 years, and in that time the church steadily progressed. Plans were made for the erection of the building which now stands in High Street, Wodonga. Mr John Whan was a Founding Member of the Church and was appointed Sunday School Superintendent, an office which he held for 46 years, rendering extensive and valued service to the church and congregation. With a growing congregation and realising the challenges presented to the Church by changing conditions, land for a new church was sought. In September 1950 property was purchased in Nilmar Avenue in Wodonga and the new Presbyterian Church St Stephens became their new home. With the amalgamation of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, the new Church became the Uniting Church. These papers contain cuttings newspaper articles from the Standard of 1882 and handwritten comments appended to these cuttings. They refer to a dispute in 1882 regarding the ownership of the church in Grasmere to which the Anglican Church was claiming ownership The author of the handwritten comments is unknown but the comments purport to be a more accurate account of events than what appears in the paper cuttings. Grasmere is a small settlement 10 kilometres north of Warrnambool. In the 1850s land in Grasmere was donated for educational purposes and a Government-subsidized school which was a Denominational School run by the Church of England was established in 1858. This school was closed when Government State Schools were established after 1872 and the Anglican Church dismantled the old school and built a church on the site in the late 1870s. This church was erected by public subscription and many of the subscribers apparently believed they were donating to a building that could be used by any local Protestant churchgoers. The church in 1882 was being used by the Presbyterian Church for its services. A public meeting was held in 1882 to try to resolve the dispute between the Anglican Church claim and the local residents’ claim that the site belonged to the local community. Apparently the dispute remained unresolved and the Grasmere Anglican Church continued to operate until the early 20th century. This document is of interest as it is associated with a dispute that took place in Grasmere in 1882 and gives some indication of the arguments that were presented at the time in favour of, or opposed to, the Anglican Church’s claim to the ownership of the church. It is a document of particular interest to the history of the Grasmere. This is a folder of eleven foolscap-size sheets of paper enclosed in a mottle-coloured cardboard cover. The front cover is creased and partly torn and the back cover is detached and is in two pieces. The pages have been stitched together with thread and contain paste-in newspaper cuttings and handwritten material in purple ink. Grasmere Anglican Church

The Church was built by George Stebbings in the 1850s and is an example of fine craftmanship. Formerly Wesleyan, Methodist then Uniting church; the foundations of the church building were constructed with stone from the walls of the first Eltham State Primary School (No. 209) building which collapsed in 1874 and were purchased by Robert David Taylor. The church is architecturally significant as a finely detailed example of a brick 19th century rural community church, one of only four in the Shire (Criteria E & B). The church is historically significant as an important link with the time when Eltham was a small, insular country settlement. Also for the historical evolution visible in the complex, with the modest 1880s church and larger red brick rear hall from the early 20th century as a reflection of population growth in the area (Criterion A). The church is historically, spiritually and socially significant because it has played, and continues to play, an important part in the spiritual and social life of the community (Criterion G). - Victorian Heritage Database The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. The earliest Methodist Church was on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Richards Street, Mitcham. In 1912 the church was removed to a site in Mitcham Road, just north of Whitehorse Road. By 1967 most of their buildings had been moved to the Presbyterian site on the corner of Whitehorse and Doncaster East Roads, Mitcham. St. Andrew's Uniting Church, formerly the Presbyterian church includes two different church buildings as well as a new addition built at the rear of the 1904 red brick building. A small weather board structure was used as a church until the Romanesque brick building opened in 1904. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From: Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates: In 1905, the land was vacant in Balaclava Road, north side, from Kooyong Road east to the right of way, except for one house. A block of this land was acquired by the Presbyterian community and a timber church erected there in 1910. In time, a larger church was required. After several years of fund raising led by George Kinross, a new red brick St Stephen's church was built in 1926 to the design of architects Haddon and Henderson. St George's Church of England held services in Mavho Street, Bentleigh from 1926 to 1984. A new Church was built in 1955. In 1996 the church property was divided into two lots. On one lot was the church which was converted into apartments. The images depict the newly completed fourth Catholic Church at Kinglake. The previous three churches having been destroyed by 'Black Saturday' bushfire. The painting is oil on canvas. The historical continuity is expressed by the continuity of the skyline and the disconnectedness of the colours. it is not a literal depiction of each church, but a recognizable and symbolic image conveying resilience of faith of the local community. The first church was burnt down in a bushfire, the second burnt down by vandals, and the three burnt down in the 2009 bushfires known as 'Black Saturday'.The white cross and black fence at the lower left commemorated the remarkable fact that these remained intact after the 2009 bushfires. The red-orange can be the colour of the kinglake soil or the fires. The return of new life is indicated by the green growth on the burnt gumtrees. The area is surrounded by 22,000 hectares of Kinglake National Park, the largest National Park close to Melbourne. The park was established in 1928 to protect native flora and fauna. Kinglake takes its name from Alexander Kinglake who travelled through the area in 1870. The church in the photograph is the former Methodist Church which is on the NW corner of Barkly and Harker Streets inn Sunbury. It was built on land donated by Thomas Woods at Lot 14 Barkly Street where in 1870 a small weatherboard building was built. In 1879 John Browning gifted land at 13 Barkly Street for the building of a new brick church on that site. The brick church continued to be a place of worship until the June 1977 when the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches came together and worshipped as the Uniting Church. St. Andrews Uniting Church have been the owners of this building since that time. The property in the foreground is 'Edgeware' at 171 Union Road, a house built by the Zeplin family. It became the home / residence of Dr Percy Liddle and later Dr James Landells Blakie. By the time this photo was taken Dr Blakie had moved across the road to 174 Union Road. In the background behind the 2 houses in the foreground is the Surrey Hills Stationmaster's house, sitting behind a picket fence. The Alan Holt register gives a build date of c1915 for this house, which fits stylistically. The first stationmaster was probably Michael Ginnane, who stayed in the area after he retired, moving to 1 Russell Street. This property was listed as 8 Bedford Avenue, the only house on the south side of the road. It was demolished in c1972 to make way for widening of the rail track with a third line. 'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.'
