This was the second honour board created by Ballarat College to honour the school captain for each year. The first award was given in 1914. Prior to the time the captain of the football first was recognised as captain of the school. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) this board was co-opted to honour Junior School captains. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - ) This board emphasizes the value placed on leadership by the school from its earliest beginnings. That the boards have been maintained and consistently displayed in significant places of honour within the school only further emphasizes the historial and social significance of the award 'school captain'. In 1972 Men's Auxilliary was disbanded and replaced with a new committee to be called The Minerva Association. Promoted in Ring-a-roo April 1972 the new association was 1) to further the welfare of College, 2) to encourage social contact between all members of the school community and 3) to promote major fund raising projects which may be beyond the means of the separate auxiliaries or the Old Collegians' Association. The Ladies' Auxiliary and the Old Collegians Association continued to exist. In 1988 the Minerva Association changed its name to the Ballarat and Clarendon College Parents' and Friends' Association. (see Ring-a-roo March 1988). The honour board emphasizes the degree to which the school was grateful for the voluntary work expended on behalf of the school by parents and friends of its community.Solid wood with two relief boards. This extraordinary record of the student cohort in 1933 reveals aspects of school life in the early 1930's. It shows young boys from the Kindergarten class, uniform and property detail. This photograph has social significance because of its detail regarding schooling in the early 1930s. On 11 April 2017 Education Minister James Merlino and Wendouree MP Sharon Knight visited Federation University to unveil designs for the new Ballarat Tech School where students will be able to grow their trade skills. Ballarat Tech School will focus on science, new energy technologies, food and fibre, advanced manufacturing and information technology. The M.B. John Building on Albert Street will be refurbished at Federation University SMB Campus at an estimated cost between $6 to $10 million. Perceval Selwyn Richards (ARVIA) was a Ballarat architect who from 1900 to 1940 was responsible for innovative Edwardian and Art Deco style buildings in the district. In 1904 his office was at the Mercantile Building on the corner of Armstrong and Dana Streets, Ballarat. Perceval Selwyn Richards was born 21 July 1865 at Christchurch, New Zealand. He married Alice Emma Nicholson. Percy Richardson sailed to Melbourne, Australia in 1887 to find employment in an architect’s office. On arrival in Ballarat started as an assistant in the architectural firm of William Brazenor, where he worked for six years before continuing with the business after Brazenor's death. He taught Architecture at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1918 to 1921. As well as his work from the Ballarat and District Anglican Diocese and the Ballarat and the Western Districts. Ballarat & Clarendon College is also one of his designs. This book was authored by Rev William Henderson, founder of Ballarat College. It was donated to the College by Keith Hofmaier (PY1944) who had received it from Rev Sid A Goddard, former Ballarat College and Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College council member and chair. The book affirms the strong theological convictions, training and qualifications of the school's founder. The book is accompanied by two letters. The first from Sid Goddard on the occasion of his presentation of the book to St Andrews Kirk. The second from Keith Hofmaier advising the inclusion of the book among the 'meagre collection of Henderson relics at the college'. Book has social significance for the college community because of its association with both William Henderson and Sid Goddard. This is the second Bevan John Shield The Touchstone December 1939 p. 9: House rivalry was greatly stimulated on Sports' Day by the gift of the Bevan John Shield. The Shield is made of rosewood with silver plates attached, on which is to be inscribed the name of the Winning House. Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Speak attended Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College 1937 - 1938. She won the Junior Tennis Champion in 1938. Betty worked as a telephonist at Coleraine Post Office after leaving CPLC in 1938. In 1949, she married Leslie James Steff from Konongwootong. They had two daughters. In 1967 Betty returned to work at the Coleraine Post Office and worked for 17 years, moving to the Hamilton PO after the Coleraine PO closed around 1980. She continued to play tennis throughout her adult years. Daughter Gwenda Steff, who donated the trophy to the school in 2016, says 'Mum was passionate about her tennis. She had a formidable backhand shot that few could return. She played Saturday afternoon competition tennis up until her late 40's and she instilled her love of the game into both my sister Margaret and myself. Mum was always too humble to acknowledge her amazing abilities - both on and off the tennis court. John Anning MacLeod John was born in Ballarat as the second generation of Ballarat MacLeod’s, with his grandfather arriving in Geelong on the Hornet in 1857 as an 11 year old child with his 60 year old father John and mother Mary aged 37 years and 5 brothers and one sister. He grew up on the corner of Drummond Street and Mair Streets, opposite what became St John of God hospital, at his parents house of Dunvegan. John entered Ballarat College as a junior student in 1923. He received 3rd in Form prizes in both 1924 and 1925. His sister Margaret, attended Clarendon Ladies College. The household employed a chauffeur, a cook, a gardener and a ladies maid to care for them. In the 1930’s his father lost his fortune in the collapse of the jute future’s market so the staff were dismissed and he left Ballarat to go to Geelong College as a boarder. He was an officer in the Geelong College cadet corps and joined the Army as a private and rose to the permanent rank of Major after meritorious performance in the intelligence area of operations. He served in North Africa, in Palestine, Egypt, Moratai, the Philippines, Java and New Guinea. He was awarded his Military MBE by King George VI for exceptional devotion to duty and for brilliant coordination work amongst the allied intelligence team. During the war he met Mary Monica Carrol Bateman, a lietenant in the 2/4th Army General Hospital at a dinner party in Brisbane. The couple had four children, Hamish John Torquil born in 1945, Rory Hugh Alexander born in 1947 and twins Ian Donald and Katriona Margaret born in 1948. After the Second World War he worked for Lumley’s Insurance Brokers in London for a couple of years to follow up his accountancy training and then returned to Ballarat due to his father’s failing health and took over the management of John MacLeod and Co, Wholesale grocers and Merchants in Lydiard Street, Ballarat. The business had been started by his great grandfather and they produced the famous Sirdar brand of products and a special tea blend called Afternoon Cup. There was a spice mill in nearby Market Street and there they roasted peanuts, coffee and ground spices for packaging and distribution to the small corner shops who were the mainstay of commercial grocery. In the 1950’s John MacLeod and Co merged with James McKay and Sons to form McKay MacLeod Pty Ltd., wholesale tobacco, wine and spirits and grocery merchants who also manufactured the Sunny South brand of sweet mustard pickles, brewed vinegar and tomato sauce. He introduced the semi-automated system for extensions and financial records on the Bradma plates that saved staff the problems of sorting out the calculations for sales tax, miscellaneous charges etc. that greatly sped up the transactions at the checkout points. A new warehouse and office complex was built in Mair Street east up near Humffray Street, with the manufacturing factory on the opposite side of the street. They had a shop in St Arnaud and one in Geelong which was the local wholesaler for supplying to the corner shops of the greater Geelong area. With the development of supermarkets the demise of the corner store began and so the sales profiles began to diminish. He unsuccessfully stood for Liberal Party pre-selection for the seat of Ballarat in 1948 and served on the Liberal state finance and executive team for many years before resigning over the issue of conscripts being sent to Vietnam. He was instrumental in leading a group of Ballarat academics in opposition to the Vietnam war and publicly resigned from the Liberal Party over their foreign policy. John MacLeod saw the writing on the wall of the business in the early 1970’s and suggested that the firm restructured with focusing on tobacco, wine and spirits. His partners did not agree and so he sold out and retired to Barwon Heads. After a few years of golfing and surfing he became frustrated and joined SCORE, the Service Corp of Retired Executives. In this role he worked for ten years in the Geelong area solving accounting problems for Geelong small businesses and so helped Beaumont’s bakery back onto its feet. He worked gentlemen’s hours of 10 am to 3 pm which allowed him to have time for a round of 9 holes on the golf course at the end of the day and to have a surf before breakfast. He fully retired at the age of 65 and had ten years of voluminous reading of local library books before dying of burns at the age of 75. His war record has been documented in other archives at the College. He was a member of the Naval and Military Club and of the Barwon Heads Golf Club. He had good crafting skills and built a series of steam driven boats for his four children that used to be sailed at home on Lake Wendouree, Lake Learmonth and on the sheltered waters of the Barwon River. The boats are now being restored to operational order to be sailed by his great grandson Grayson Girardi. John Anning MacLeod John was born in Ballarat as the second generation of Ballarat MacLeod’s, with his grandfather arriving in Geelong on the Hornet in 1857 as an 11 year old child with his 60 year old father John and mother Mary aged 37 years and 5 brothers and one sister. He grew up on the corner of Drummond Street and Mair Streets, opposite what became St John of God hospital, at his parents house of Dunvegan. John entered Ballarat College as a junior student in 1923. He received 3rd in Form prizes in both 1924 and 1925. His sister Margaret, attended Clarendon Ladies College. The household employed a chauffeur, a cook, a gardener and a ladies maid to care for them. In the 1930’s his father lost his fortune in the collapse of the jute future’s market so the staff were dismissed and he left Ballarat to go to Geelong College as a boarder. He was an officer in the Geelong College cadet corps and joined the Army as a private and rose to the permanent rank of Major after meritorious performance in the intelligence area of operations. He served in North Africa, in Palestine, Egypt, Moratai, the Philippines, Java and New Guinea. He was awarded his Military MBE by King George VI for exceptional devotion to duty and for brilliant coordination work amongst the allied intelligence team. During the war he met Mary Monica Carrol Bateman, a lietenant in the 2/4th Army General Hospital at a dinner party in Brisbane. The couple had four children, Hamish John Torquil born in 1945, Rory Hugh Alexander born in 1947 and twins Ian Donald and Katriona Margaret born in 1948. After the Second World War he worked for Lumley’s Insurance Brokers in London for a couple of years to follow up his accountancy training and then returned to Ballarat due to his father’s failing health and took over the management of John MacLeod and Co, Wholesale grocers and Merchants in Lydiard Street, Ballarat. The business had been started by his great grandfather and they produced the famous Sirdar brand of products and a special tea blend called Afternoon Cup. There was a spice mill in nearby Market Street and there they roasted peanuts, coffee and ground spices for packaging and distribution to the small corner shops who were the mainstay of commercial grocery. In the 1950’s John MacLeod and Co merged with James McKay and Sons to form McKay MacLeod Pty Ltd., wholesale tobacco, wine and spirits and grocery merchants who also manufactured the Sunny South brand of sweet mustard pickles, brewed vinegar and tomato sauce. He introduced the semi-automated system for extensions and financial records on the Bradma plates that saved staff the problems of sorting out the calculations for sales tax, miscellaneous charges etc. that greatly sped up the transactions at the checkout points. A new warehouse and office complex was built in Mair Street east up near Humffray Street, with the manufacturing factory on the opposite side of the street. They had a shop in St Arnaud and one in Geelong which was the local wholesaler for supplying to the corner shops of the greater Geelong area. With the development of supermarkets the demise of the corner store began and so the sales profiles began to diminish. He unsuccessfully stood for Liberal Party pre-selection for the seat of Ballarat in 1948 and served on the Liberal state finance and executive team for many years before resigning over the issue of conscripts being sent to Vietnam. He was instrumental in leading a group of Ballarat academics in opposition to the Vietnam war and publicly resigned from the Liberal Party over their foreign policy. John MacLeod saw the writing on the wall of the business in the early 1970’s and suggested that the firm restructured with focusing on tobacco, wine and spirits. His partners did not agree and so he sold out and retired to Barwon Heads. After a few years of golfing and surfing he became frustrated and joined SCORE, the Service Corp of Retired Executives. In this role he worked for ten years in the Geelong area solving accounting problems for Geelong small businesses and so helped Beaumont’s bakery back onto its feet. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit.
