Medal struck for the 24th International Congress of the International Society of the History of Medicine, held in Budapest in 1974. This medal was given to contributors to the congress. Dr Frank Forster delivered a paper at this congress. There are some slides relating to Ignac Semmelweis in Frank Forster's slide collection under the heading of 'Budapest'.Ignac Semmelweis is credited with discovering the cause of puerperal sepsis, by establishing a link to the infectious material carried on the hands of students and doctors from the autopsy room into the maternity ward. According to a typed note with the object, this medal came from Czechoslovakia in 1974. It belonged to Frank Forster. Alfred Kotasek (1911-1991) was a Czech professor of obstetrics and gynaecology. The date featured on this medal is the date of his birth, and 'MUDr' is a Master of General Medicine qualification. The Latin motto featured on this medal is strongly associated with the 17th century Czech (Moravian) author and pedagogue Jan Amos Komensky, who allegedly took this phrase as his motto and featured it in one of his most famous works, 'Orbis sensualium pictus' (The World in Pictures) [1658]. Loosely translated, the meaning of the motto approximates 'Let everything flow freely, without violence to things.' 'Orbis sensualium pictus' has been described as the first true illustrated book for children, and Komensky is considered by some to be the father of modern education.Round bronze coloured medallion. This medal was awarded to Dr George Rothwell Adam, who was a lecturer in Obstetrics at the University of Melbourne from 1899 to 1913. As part of receiving this award, Adam delivered a Listerian Oration entitled ' The influence Listerism exercises on obstetrics' at a meeting of the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association on May 25, 1922. "This Oration and Medal was established by the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association in 1914. The first Oration was delivered on Thursday, June 25th of that year. On that day, the new premises of the Branch was opened. Subsequently, this annual Oration became recognized as the most important scientific event in the calendar of branch Scientific Meetings. In 1948 it was delivered by one of South Australia’s famous sons, Sir Hugh Cairns. There has been no Lister Oration since 1979. The obverse of the Lister Medal shows a portrait of Lord Lister 1827-1912, and on the reverse is inscribed ‘British Medical Association, South Australian Branch, Lister Oration’. The Registration Act 1836 established the General Register Office and a new system of national registration of births, marriages and deaths to take effect from 1837. There was a need to set up a system to record births, to aid with the planning of services and to record deaths to enable further study on the causes of mortality. Medal commemorating the Centenary of Government of Victoria and the Discovery of Gold, commissioned by the Victorian Government and gifted to the Shire of Glenlyon. Designed by Andor Mészáros and minted by K.G. Luke, Melbourne, 1951. 1951 marked the centenary of Victoria's separation from the colony of New South Wales. As part of the celebrations, the Victorian Government commissioned this medal from Andor Meszaros. Drawing on his classical background, Mészáros developed the imagery for 'Equality and Justice through Freedom'. The man holding the torch represents equality; the blindfolded woman holding a sword is the symbol of justice, and both are mounted on a horse that has broken its shackles. Features on the reverse a design of a banksia and bottlebrush. There was another version of this medal which depicted a pair of gold prospectors on the reverse.This medal was presented to the Shire of Glenlyon in 1951. Reserve Forces Day Council Boer War Commemorative Medallion 2012 Descendant Medallion with ribbon suitable medallion has been struck to allow descendants and supporters to honour those who served in this all-but forgotten conflict 100 years ago. The Reserve Forces Day Council recognises it was a War fought in the main by Reservists. Permanent forces were small in number with only a Permanent Force Artillery unit and a number of staff officers and soldiers serving in the war. The Reserve Forces Day Council’s objective is to "Raise the profile of the Reserve Forces and to thank serving and former members for their service, and their families and employers for their essential support." This medallion has been struck for descendants and in memory of those Soldiers who fought in the War.
