A folded New Year's greeting card. It is decorated on all four sides. It has floral illustrations and greetings. This pennant was donated to the Mission by June Muirhead (nee Richardson) who visited the Mission on two occasions: on the 13 November 2014 and then in 2016. She lived from age 3 to 8, with her parents, Cuthbert (Bert) Richardson and Jane (Jenny) Richardson, and her sister, Edna, in the Cottage at 717 Flinders Street. Her father, was the caretaker of the Flinders Street building between 1943-1949. . In 1943 her father was hired to work at the Mission as a caretaker. The family moved from Wonthaggi. When she lived in the Mission, she would sometimes sneak into the club to look at books and pictures. Some seafarers would give her badges, tokens. One of them gave her this felt pennant. In 1949, the family moved back to Wonthaggi and June started year 5 over there.A number of souvenir gifts and small boxes were apparently available through the Mission To Seamen in the 1940s. This acquisition adds to the small collection of items from the period which could be used to form the core of an informative exhibition. Similar flags were made in other countries depicting an animal (kiwi bird in New Zealand, springbox in South Africa) and other Australian towns.A triangular felted, dark blue pennant with printed cursive inscription and motifs including: the Mission to Seamen Flying Angel flag, an outline of Australia; a Koala wearing a captain's hat; an insignia emblem for the Merchant Navy. A looped cotton binding along left edge of the triangle to thread the flag on a stick or cord support. This is a souvenir which would have been mass-produced for tourists with the wording on the boomerang added to suit each different town or place. This type of souvenir was popular in Australia in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. This item came from a Hamilton antique shop.This item is of some minor interest as it demonstrates what tourists were buying in the 1940s. The use of the boomerang would indicate that overseas and local buyers would be attracted by what was seen as a typical Australian symbol. The size of the item would attract those travelling with limited luggage space. The item can be noted by researchers of social history and used for displayThis is a souvenir of Warrnambool in the shape of a wooden boomerang with a small yellow ribbon tied in the middle of the boomerang and a 1940 calendar attached by the ribbon. The wording on the boomerang is in gold lettering. The calendar is in the form of a small booklet. It can be displayed on a hook using the yellow ribbon loop. The post card waas assembled by Salesian College, which is in Rupertswood Mansion. Initially Salesian College started as an agricultural school training boys in farm skills. The box was presumably made in Australia to be used as a gift container for Christmas gifts or greetings by people associated with the Mission or their acquaintances or family members. The box is dated and has the Mission to Seamen logo and description as a promotional way to describe and inform people of the Mission's purpose. The gift was sent by Mariner Merrylees to sister Marjorie in Manitoulin Island, CanadaThis everyday practical object represents in its function an acknowledgement by the Mission to Seamen organisation of the need for sailors and seafarers to stay in touch with friends and family at Christmas time and this sample box of a wartime Christmas marks a particularly difficult time in history for seafarers to stay in touch and connected with loved ones.Cardboard beige rectangular box in a small size, with blue stamped inscriptions on it detailing promotional information about The Missions To Seamen.
